I wouldn't recommend playing with it, but I don't think once or twice in a controlled environment with a small amount is gonna hurt you if you touch it. Its surface tension is too great to get into the pores of your skin, IF you don't smash it into your hand; it will eventually break up into tiny pieces that might possibly be able to hide in the fingerprints or under nails, then it can be rubbed off in clothes and vaporize. That's not good. I'd say for safety, don't play with mercury.

I will point out about my comment below, Mercury will not instantly kill neurons like the other guy said, however over long periods of time it can be harmful, its long term mercury exposure that is more worrying than handling it (Outside) for 5 minutes, but please don't do what this person did in the video, use 3 layers of gloves and handle in a fume hood, its good chemical practise more than anything else.

Grandpa was one of those people that just collected everything so whenever something that had mercury in it was broken or ruined he would empty it out into the jar. Now days its a bit harder to get and more expensive you would have to look it up to find out the cheapest and easiest way to get some.

@DeathlordSlavik You are wrong actually, although handling mercury for very short periods of time is unlikely to cause harm, it CAN be absorbed by the skin, also you can never remove all traces of mercury from your hand conventionally, mercury vapours are also highly toxic. The reason you played with mercury when you were younger is that it wasn't regulated as it is now, as the long term health hazards and toxicity were less well known.

Read the MSDS for Mercury if you do not believe it, there is the reason why every academic I know that handles mercury always does it under very controlled conditions, i.e excellent ventilation and no direct contact. Although Mercury will not kill you on contact or anything extreme, over time it does absorb through the skin and inhalation of mercury vapour is particularly harmful.
