i just got the Seagate free Agent desk external hard drive 2TB and it was on special for $89 it says its for PC but lots of ppl told me it wil work for MAC because its got USB . does anyone know ???? please msg me if you know .

@sk84life0 Yes yes...There are two mac users in my house, my friend always buy something that has "for mac" tags on it. In contrary I never buy something which has that tag on it. Difference: I saved tons of money because whatever work on windows will work for macs (hate to use the term PC since everything owned personally is PERSONAL)

For hard drive you have 3 options:

1. install NTFS enabler for mac, or

2. format the drives as HFS+, or

3. format as FAT32 so it works in both mac/windows

@gregnmac yeah i think i formated my drive as a hfs . because if i did the fat32 i would lose lots of space . from my hard drive. but . it works for my mac and im extremely happy. i have all my stuff back up . :)

Please be advised of you own this HD.. (like I do) if it stops working, does not power on, then change the adaptor before you spazz out.... luckily my bro has an older one with the same power supply.

In future I'll buy something else.. may even buy a WD tommorrow to back up this thing? NO ONE wants to lose data.. if it happens, crack this open, connect to motherboard, transfer to new HD before you spend money on data recovery.

If under warranty, pay top $ for recovery but may get replacement

My Seagate FreeAgent just died after only 2 weeks. And it seems to be a very common problem with it, and with all Seagate products from what I read on their forums. You might want to go take a look there before buying one of their product.

Hi there, was wondering if i could get some tips on care for the hard drive. How should i turn off the HD, should i constantly unplug the power cable from the back of the HD? also is it possible to use boot camp for windows on a partition on the HD?

I have a macbook pro but did not buy the mac version of this particular hard drive, will it still work with my mac? And if i format it to hfs wiill it allow me to transfer and download files from a windows pc??

Any extended Hard drive will work with Mac, as long as it is formatted FAT or FAT32 or HFT (Mac OS Extended Journaled), and you can format the drive to either or them using 'Disk Utility' application by using the 'Partition' section of the app. BUT, do not format it to HFT or Mac OS Extended "***" because Windows will not recognize that format at all and vise versa, Apple won't recognized NTFS. FAT32 is the best way to go and both Windows and Mac will recognize, basically a universal format.

NTFS is crap anyway. Hmmm. Im suprised mac recognizes FAT or Fat32. Don't they use Linux file systems?

Yeah Macs can recognize & write to FAT & FAT32, but I made a mistake, it can recognized NTFS but not write to it, unless you download a patch for it. Not to sure if Macs are similar to Linux files systmes because Linux Ubuntu and recognize all Mac and Windows & FAT32 files.

I'm not sure what you mean about FAT32 not being designed for 1TB, but I formatted mine as FAT32?

@ElectrifyingCinema it's not that fat32 is not designed for 1tb it's just that it's not really preferrable for some people..

that is because it has a maximum file size of 4 Gb. and NTFS does not have this limitation.

so if you make a backup image of your pc... and you probably will exceed 4 with ease.. and you use fat32... then you're pretty screwed cause you can't save it.

Hi, I had a 1.5 TB Seagate Hard Drive just like yours and I had some trouble with it here and there. It's true that it makes no noise and I hardly notice its there, cept the bright light. However, every so often I have to disconnect and reconnect the Seagate because it won't show up on my mac. This usually happens when I turn my computer back on. I either have a bad one or I need to look for a firmware update.

I got also the 1,5 TB one. Same problems as you, it didn't show up some time. It's acually the second Freeagent Desk the first didn't work at all in the first place. You may go and Download Seagate Diagnostic from Seagate's Site, if you haven't already.
