thanks, you've no idea how helpful this is. I've been studying tonality, looking at classical string quartets Mozart / Haydn etc, and I had no idea how freaky and free, particularly the Beatles, Kinks etc were with flattened 7ths etc... I suppose this must come from the whole blues scale thingie they were used to.... 'cos I know they weren't big on theory. Thanks for thsi.

There are multiple causes: new strings, too low distance from the strings to keyboard, type of bass, type of strings, the equalizer with more middle and high than low frequency...Sorry for my bad english:)
