Drummania and Rock Band are both great for different reasons. Drummania is a lot more realistic by comparison(which isn't fair really because Drummania is an arcade cabinet while the Rock Band drums are a cost-conscious product), but a lot of the music in Drummania is an acquired taste. Rock Band however has great music but has a more simplistic setup. It's worth noting that Drummania doesn't have a floor tom(purple note) and it doesn't have hi-hat/cymbal markers, and no double bass pedal.

However, there is a new version of Drummania called Drummania XG coming out that does indeed have a left cymbal, a hi-hat pedal (with notes marked for it), a floor tom, and double bass, as well as a wide-screen hi-def monitor. :P

You don't have to hit those particular notes differently, it's extra notation for people who prefer more complexity. I'm pretty sure you -can- set it up to where you need two different inputs. The marker in middle of the note for the hi-hat indicates that it's an open hi-hat as opposed to the default which is closed hi-hat. With the marker, it can mean different things from song to song, some use it to distinguish rides from crashes. This one uses it for what I -think- is the china cymbal.

I commend Dream Theater on the amount of notes they are able to cram into one bar. I don't know if anyone even had the desire to do it before they did, so props for that. Also, they must have crazy endurance because they're pretty much always playing something really intense, always. Lastly, I don't think any other band tries as hard to play with nonsensical rhythms as they do, they are the kings of complicated for the sake of complicated there.

I like Dream Theater because of the influence I heard from all the great bands of the 70s and 80s, from Pink Floyd to Frank Zappa. I like the complementation between all the instruments in each song, and how through all of the complications that they quite obviously intentionally put there, it still seems to flow between everything. Honestly, some of their stuff DOESN'T appeal to me, but most of it is quite enjoyable in my opinion. They're not that great live though, to be honest.

They don't put enough feeling into getting the crowd involved. I saw them live and I really felt it was more of a 'sit and watch' performance compared to other bands that I've seen such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Nightwish.

DT has managed to do what I didn't know was possible. They use only non-traditional scales and only atypical time signatures, and yet somehow manage to sound static and robotic. The reason is that they always use them in the same way. Now, if you want to hear what prog is supposed to sound like, and how you make dissonant non-traditional scales sound musical, listen to King Crimson. Musically complicated =/= musically proficient.

Tool knows when to play a lot really fast, and they know how to do it, so when they do, it sounds amazing. They also use rhythms that are as crazy as DT that are often more complicated than DT (because of polyrhythms) but since Danny Carey is a mad genius, it sounds great, it doesn't sound like a record skipping.
