  • Can't wait to join the RIR (am from the south btw)

  • @Irish16King By the way, have you read Task Force Helmand? It's what happened next to 'an ordinary soldier'.

  • @londonsw111 Im afraid not buts its the next one im going to buy! I was just amazed to find out with what British soldiers have to put up with and how it really is out there.

  • British citizens,British soldiers, fighting for BRITAIN nothing more nothing less

  • @MRAK47ification Explain to me then the numerous soldiers from the Republic in the RIR, who hold Irish passports and aren't British citizens?

  • @ItsRMD unionists

  • @MRAK47ification Idiot!

  • @ItsRMD Tbh m8 no joke MRAK47ification is honestly the most pathetic person on you tube this is all he does day in day out for years he just talks shit about ppl on you tube its sad.

  • @MegaSlayerr I've seen his comments plenty of times. The lad obviously has some problem with the fact that both Northern Irish and Southern Irish get on fine with each other within the RIR, and in barracks room both the British flag and Tricolor are hung side by side the best part being........... Not 1 of the lads could give a fuck either.

  • WHAT A FUCKING JOKE ! HERE WE HAVE , the UDR! LETTING on they are fighting in ,afganistan ,alexander the great couldnt defeat these people ,never mind the russins ,you people are a fucking joke hahahahahaha

  • @rangers11000 I am just finishing State Red Attack and it is en excellent read. Must try this one next.

  • heard him last night in portadown royal; british legion discussing him time in helmand and his feelings about taking life etc. these guys are real heros who have to go to war with an enemy who dont fear death but embrace it. and he voiced fears about the afghan army and police men they patrolled with and mentored and what do we wake up to the next morning , 5 british soldiers killed by an afgan police man. i bet doug is sitting at home now reflecting on his prohetic words last night.

  • OMG it makes me feel so old! Last time I saw Douglas was in school way back when he was that kid in the photo with his brother & Dad. I couldn't believe that he had written a book let alone gone through the adventures that he tells of in the book.Funny how life takes us through so many turns, Douglas doing his thing, me now in Canada shovelling the hell out of snow! So many of us from those Clounagh & Tech days, thrown to the wind! Great read & I look forward to the new book coming out.

  • 1 R IRSH are based down the road from me. Tough bunch of lads.

  • Tough indeed. Did you see that programm on BBC1 last week? Wounded? It featured a young Irish Ranger who lost both legs in Afghan to an IED. Brave lad. ANd have you read either of the books? Task Force Helmand now out - it's Doug's story but also that of the other guys from Royal Iriah. Cracking read.

  • I did watch Wounded, quite an eye opener. For some reason its made me more determined to join the forces, to help out basically. I haven't read Task force Helmand but if its anywhere near as good as An Ordinary Soldier then I will be reading it.

  • ive read this book and watched the dispatches both were very good

  • I thought dispatches was great. Glad you liked the book. The sequel is out at the start of October - Task Force Helmand. It documents Doug's return to Afghanistan in 2008 for another tour - also talks a lot about his Royal Irish colleagues.

  • i'm just reading this book now. bout half way through, its pretty good.

  • Which bit you got to?

  • Sorry that was to you londonsw111

  • Have you read many other books about Afghanistan?

  • Looks as if the release date for TFH is October 6th. What are you reading now?

  • I went to hear Doug Beattie speak about his book.. really good.. got a signed copy to make the evening worthwhile. He's a fine soldier.

  • Where did you hear him speak?

Glad you enjoyed the book - do spread the word.

You know he has got a new book out in October about his 2008 tour? It's called Task Force Helmand.

  • At Waterstones bookshop in Chichester.. he was excellent (Better than when interviewed for Dispatches) - I will look out for his next book, thanks for the heads up... I think the thread should not be attributed entirely to the R Irish though... they were a mixed bunch! But no matter they were all pretty brave no matter which Regiment.

  • hahahah ur funny stop begging 2 other countries 4 help we are aloone and fightin wit the whole world thats is wat u call hero's fightin wit the whole world we dont have weapons bt still kick u guys ass and i love it but i feel soz 4 the ppl who died in my country 4 nothing they fight 4 america and i feel soz 4 u coz ur a big mother fucker

  • you sick minded fuck. typical fucking muslim.

  • does anyone know if theres a documentary that i can buy from the book

  • Not sure that you can buy it, but Sean Langan made a C4 Dispatches documentary about the battle of Garmsir which Doug fought in. It was called Fighting the Taliban. It is available in five parts on YouTube. Well worth a look. He's as brave/crazy as the soldiers! If you enjoyed the book, do spread the word...

  • Great job out in Afghanistan and the book was great. GB

  • great book doug and great work in afghanistan , ur book is very in depth and you think your there anyway keep up the good work guys jay from dublin

  • his books amazing

  • got his book, good read!i've also got selection on the 23rd of march for the infantry!!cant wait, onlt 10 days to go!!

  • Again proof that no north south divide exists within the RIR, in tim collins book and Dougs book they are irish men serving in her majesty's armed forces. the bravery these men show can not be compared to anything lightly, and noone, unless they have been there and served can imagine what it can be like. god bless them all

  • Good watch.

    Well done Uncle Dougie.

  • my uncle is in the RIR to

  • My Father is in the RIR as well

  • m8 my message is only a sentence to let dougie no how his fellow country feel how proud we all are of the sacrifices and fantastic job he and all the RIR has done in foreign fields to secure all of our freedom GOD BLESS THEM ALL FOR QUEEN AND COUNTRY

  • god bless you dougie true ulsterman and hero

  • Thanks for taking the time to post a message. Appreciated.

  • A great soldier who has made everyone in the Portadown area proud.

  • Thanks for the comment. I agree with what you say. Do spread the word about his exploits.

  • "If you're not there and familiar with the conditions you're in no position to make any judgement" This is a problem for many soldiers down through the years. Here is almost an echo of feelings from a different scenario 30+ years ago.

  • Where was it you served?
