Actually, I think the band as a whole shows this restraint and control that postmeback talked about, especially over dynamics - no "saw-tooth" model of loudness for them! Lovely to hear.
what I like most about this video is the control in Paul May's percussion solo - his willingness just to concentrate on one sound so obsessively, not to go flailing around every inch of the drumkit every few seconds. let's say taht free improv is about self-limitation as much as (more than?) liscence, absolute freedom. then May's playing shows great restraint and discipline and the music is all the better for it.
@postmeback I have had the pleasure of playing with Mr May on several occasions and you seem to have summed up his playing very well. He also wears a fine brogue from time to time.
