The recording engineers, for whatever reason, have abandoned the all-too-common practice of muting the piano - which is usually a 9-foot grand - so that string players can be heard better.
The result is a recording which is actually closer to what a live performance would be like. Richter was a strong pianist, but he was also a master of controlled strength, and a true pianissimo is something he is known to have valued highly.
@MJHutchings I understand Clara considered Mendelssohn the best pianist because of his delicacy. Don't think she played aggressively. It is called a piano quintet, not solo for piano with string accompaniment.
If you like subtlety without the banging, stodginess, squareness, etc., check out the Flonzaley/Gabrilowitsch version I put up as a response. The Borodin players are only somewhat indelicate but Richter must think this is a piano solo with string quartet accompaniament.
@truecrypt I'll remove the video if you wish. I don't care for more hits, I care for giving those who have never heard the completely different approach of earlier chamber groups a chance to do so. I apologize to you but stand by my assessment. I heard the Borodin SQ in the mid-seventies and enjoyed them, they may well have been the best of their times, but I had no basis for comparison with a group like Flonzaley.
@peterbresnan If you mean "critisize" or "practise", that's actually accepted spelling in other English-speaking regions. In the United States, we say "criticize" and "practice", but in other places, it's acceptable to use an "s" instead of a "c".

I AWARD THIS 2 1/2 CLARAS...Despite the authoritative way they handle sonorities,
there is too much of the steamroller.Some of the lyric is lost.The last 2 minutes of this became quite expressive and lovely,while more than adequately preserving forward impetus.
It's so powerful... and yet so delicate. If you like this quintet check out the Trout quintet by schubert and dvorak's piano quintet no. 2

Unnecessary confusion here.

If you want to blame, blame the engineers

Why does 2nd Violinist think it shouldn't be piano with string accompaniment when Schumann undoubtedly wrote it as such for Clara?

@2ndviolinist
Do you need to promote your video reply by "criticizing" another outstanding performance?
Not nice...

@2ndviolinist
You are more than welcome to post any video reply, especially this good.
You're also fully entitled to your opinion... but don't make it sound like a diagnosis.
If you want to criticize please find better words and arguments.
