Since Snape was an expert at Occlumency, he was able to betray Voldemort, and at great risk. This is why Dumbledore was so fond of him and always told Harry to call him Professor, and even let some of the tough punishments Harry got from him slide. Snape was about the most courageous character, other than Harry, in the series.
