Wow, this track is fantastic. So different than anything I have been listening to. I don't know how I have never head this album before. This is really, really great stuff.
This song is like a small seed that was planted many years ago to grow into a large tree that we have today, and a Great seed it was at that.... the tree developed many branches and went out of control somewhat but we still know where the roots are !
@porckchops1 Same, you need a mixture of tastes in music, I'm the only person I know who likes stuff like Slipknot and Death Metal and other types of metal to jazz, and everything in between (apart from Dubstep). It gets boring listening to the same genre of music all the time, and there isn't much variety, you need a variety to spice life up!
"One of the most underrated and greatest hiphop albums ever...."
Why? Underrated because? Because not enougth people appreciate it? It's respected by true rap fans and I guess that's the only thing which matters.. Music today is to much about quantity nowadays..
@fiqraw When it came out it was very highly rated. There was loads of good press about it here in the UK and I went straight out and bought it. One of the few hiphop albums I ever bought. Still love it.
@fiqraw i think every real hiphop fan puts it in their top 10. unfortunatly a real hiphop fan is a rare bread, hiphop fans usually come in the form of a pitbull admirer. vom
@fiqraw It's not at all underrated, no idea where you got that impression from. It's still recognized as a big part of musical history, constantly included in greatest albums lists by ... idk, douchebags who make their living making lists like that... Point is, they got their probs, it just slows down after two decades. You wouldn't say Charlie Chaplin's biggest pieces are underrated, would you?
This album was the most recognized one by De La Soul, and their later work is just as good.
This is really one of my favorite albums ever... I'm so excited... tonight they're performing in my hometown and I will see them for the very first time!!!!
gangsta rap has its moments that earn respect. like fleshnbone said, it shed light on the inner city issues that were being over looked. it brought the ghetto to the faces of the public whether they liked it or not. In a way dont even think about the music if u dont like it, think about what the music actually did for people. Ill listen to de la soul, atcq, and diggable planets before ill listen to NWA anyday. but theyre both respectable in a different way.
lol @ my crackers and choc brothers. @ FleshNBone - they'll never know what De La meant back in the day. The time was much different. 3 Feet High and... Rising. When 40+ comes they'll have their De La.
@TheMoosedrool86 What are you talking about? I'm bumping De La every day and I absolutely love it. All I did here was respond to an ignorant comment saying hip-hop went "gangsta" when it died when in reality it's gone POP, I gave them a reality check by explaining that gangsta rap started as social commentary rather than glorification of drugs, some dumb ass trash talked and said it was all non-sense. So I explained that even the "conscious" groups had their nonsensical songs.
Hey now, let's enjoy Hip Hop and stop arguing behind keyboards. That's why my favorite moment of the Source awards was when East vs West was stomped by Andre 3000. Andre made these words famous... "The South got somethin' to say!"
This song represents a brief , last moment in time where it seemed that it would be possible for music to bring people together .....to share the love.
Doesn't come much better - De La Soul flows, Prince Paul - sublime sampling - Bob Dorough's original and Mr John Bonham on Drums - Nice Work! - Still sounds phat.
@freqeist You mean went POP. Gangsta rap needs to stop being blamed for hip-hop's downfall. Gangsta rappers at one point had more substance in their songs than groups like De La and ATCQ.
@fleshnbone187 hip hops downfall?... society has changed, the music has changed to reflect that.... gangster rap was just a reflection on general society during the 90's. i like gangster rap, it doesnt change the fact that most of the substance was illegal sh*t and violence & murder...
@GABS303 That doesn't make it bad. Hell, my main reason why I love gangsta rap is because of the subject matter. You don't hear anyone say "Oh, action movies are bad for society cause they show guns and buildings that blow up". Gangsta rap used to be social consciousness that shed light on subjects that people outside of the inner city had no idea of.
@fleshnbone187 And what is the subject matter? Oh wait your username ends in 187? Now I understand, another ignorant kat walking around here thinking death is something to somehow glorify, the bottomline is "gangsta rap" and it's rappers were to ignorant back then to realize the blowback that their "substance" was gonna cause to the younger gen, now look at them! Gangsta rap shouldn't take full blame, but it does deserve it's fair share.
@Whisper2771 You obviously have never heard of songs like Dopeman, Six Feet Deep, City Under Siege, The Hunted Child, Mind Playing Tricks on Me, Hand of the Dead Body, A Minute to Pray and a Second to Die or All for the Money so don't open your mouth on a genre you don't understand a thing about. Get back at me once you've heard these songs, then we can talk.
@fleshnbone187 Let me inform you you child, im a 40yr old black man that grew up highly influenced by hip-hip, HIGHLY INFLUENCED! I was the first person in my city to bring in the NWA RECORD, YES RECORD! I knew Ghetto Boyz BEFORE they became known to the mainstream "187ers" like yourself! So why don't YOU understand the genre that you think you know about, late comer. If you knew what I know then why didnt you include artist like Schoolly D or Just Ice? Why? because you have no REAL history!
@Whisper2771 The point is not how old you are, the point is you are saying gangsta rap was all no substance and just plain violence glorification. I showed you some songs that prove this WRONG. Go brag about your knowledge somewhere else, will ya? As for Just Ice and Schoolly D? Just cause you mention a couple of old school rappers doesn't make you cool. Their music still pales in comparison to Ice-T, N.W.A, Geto Boys and everything that they influenced.
@fleshnbone187 Lmao! You really have no idea about the songs that you "proved" me wrong on huh! Oh wait, Mind playing tricks on me was about what? What was going on in the hood? No dumbass it was about what each rapper was going thru, and it was about what? An episode of violence! Hence the suicide attempt by Bushwick which eventually led to him NOW working in the CHRISTIAN RAP WORLD! So so much for your "gangsta rap had more substance" b.s.!
@Whisper2771 You really don't know shit. It was about paranoia and depression caused by living the 'gangsta' life. For a guy who claims to know it all, you sure as hell sound like you're trolling. And how about the other songs? You're full of crap and a hater. Why would you even bother buying N.W.A and Geto Boys records if you are going to just hate? You might just be a liar playing a veteran on youtube. I'd rather be an open minded "latecomer" than an idiot like you.
@fleshnbone187 woah, shut the fuck up, and take de la soul and a tribe called quest out of that sentence, and substance, DE LA, AND ATCQ didnt rap about money, bitches, and weed every track, name a decent ass gangsta rapper, and dont say lil wayne
@jumpercity1 Nice, another ignorant underground nerd we got here, the fact that you mentioned Lil Wayne proves that. Anyways, De La Soul and ATCQ didn't rap about money bitches or any other materialistic shit but you got to admit a lot of their songs don't really have any deep substance. For instance, this song right here doesn't really talk about anything special. The magic number? Really? But it's a classic so I'm not dissing it. You want decent gangsta rap, check out Geto Boys & Scarface.
@gato6591 Three? Is that it? I can mention a million of them. If you want to open your mind, though. I can recommend you some good gangsta rap from the 90s and 80s that talk about relevant stuff and real shit. You know, like early Ice Cube, Ice-T, Geto Boys, NWA, Compton's Most Wanted and their associates.
You asked for 3 non-weed/bitches/money gangsta tracks: Ice Cube "Once Upon a Time in the Projects", Geto Boys "Six Feet Deep", Ice-T "The Hunted Child".
@fleshnbone187 Well to each his own! But I beg to differ... even greats like Tupac had immature diss songs, and NWA had some pretty questionable misogyny. But De La Soul was ALL about empathy, honesty, love, heart and soul. Don't get me wrong, I love plenty of gangster rap, but De La Soul and ATCQ lacked its arrogance and violence. They focused more on writing engaging lyrics than acting tough or hyping themselves.
@MonsieurRondu Fair enough, but you wanna know why I love gangsta rap the most out of any genre? Cause of it's VIOLENT CONTENT! I'd rather hear a song about murdering motherfuckers than a corny love song, though, I admit De La Soul are pretty good at getting me to the other side with them cause I actually love "Eye Know" and "4 More".
@fleshnbone187 Gangsta Rap should take FULL responsibility for the down fall of rap it portrayed a "positive" image of loose sex, drug use ,killing fellow young African americans and dealing drugs
@nykballaz No, "bling rap" should take responsibility. NWA, Ice-T, Geto Boys and company only told it like they saw it in the streets. De La Soul may not be from the inner cities, so maybe that's why their music has always been positive and carefree. Not all people live heavenly, think about it. Still, gangsta rap is my favorite subgenre and will always be!
@nykballaz Umm.. I'm pretty sure that those songs weren't positive. Nobody likes killing, you can only get use too it. Same goes for cocaine, opium, meth, and water. Woodie,2pac,bonethugs,nine, and so many others try to display reality. Although when you're looking at reality through a glass mirror, reality isn't always the truth. Rights equal actual wrongs for our youth.
@LewisTheDogue Only a moron believes this hot garbage written. It doesn't matter what moronic hippies believe about hip-hop. The truth is, hip-hop is from the streets and tells it like it is. Gangsta rap was a voice for the youngsters of the ghetto streets to tell the world about their life. You want positivity? "Positive ain't where they life" to rephrase Treach. They only told it like it was, music should come from the heart. Ain't no use being positive if you don't believe it.
@LewisTheDogue What? Your comment was just shitting on gangsta rap needlessly. I love De La Soul just like I love gangsta rap, unfortunately, most of the idiots that have responded to me are not capable of that.
@fleshnbone187 Temper temper boy...calm down ..you're just yellin ...Especially for you ..noiw..i like gangster rap myself, quite a bit..From 89 up till now..do i think that the whole gangster bullshit has damaged the image of Hip Hop?
Hell yes!
so, it's not just black or white, and it's not what you like or what i like, but there is also a truth, and i think of em all!
Lucky lol I might get it on vinyl even though i have it on cd.. but i need to get a decent turntable because the one I have is shit and skips.. people might think im weird for having it on vinyl and cd but.. fuck this able is the best..

@fleshnbone187 woah, shut the fuck up, and take de la soul and a tribe called quest out of that sentence, and substance, DE LA, AND ATCQ didnt rap about money, bitches, and weed every track, name a decent ass gangsta rapper, and dont say lil wayne
jumpercity1 3 months ago
@jumpercity1 Nice, another ignorant underground nerd we got here, the fact that you mentioned Lil Wayne proves that. Anyways, De La Soul and ATCQ didn't rap about money bitches or any other materialistic shit but you got to admit a lot of their songs don't really have any deep substance. For instance, this song right here doesn't really talk about anything special. The magic number? Really? But it's a classic so I'm not dissing it. You want decent gangsta rap, check out Geto Boys & Scarface.
fleshnbone187 3 months ago
@fleshnbone187 give me three gangsta tracks that don't mention money bitches or weed once
gato6591 3 months ago
@gato6591 Three? Is that it? I can mention a million of them. If you want to open your mind, though. I can recommend you some good gangsta rap from the 90s and 80s that talk about relevant stuff and real shit. You know, like early Ice Cube, Ice-T, Geto Boys, NWA, Compton's Most Wanted and their associates.
You asked for 3 non-weed/bitches/money gangsta tracks: Ice Cube "Once Upon a Time in the Projects", Geto Boys "Six Feet Deep", Ice-T "The Hunted Child".
Wiz Khalifa/Rick Ross =/= gangsta rap.

@gato6591 name me three things that are better than money, bitches, and weed.

@gato6591 but money hoes and weed are the best things in the world, after mac d's, so why not rap about them
Flamestrke 3 months ago
@fleshnbone187 Well to each his own! But I beg to differ... even greats like Tupac had immature diss songs, and NWA had some pretty questionable misogyny. But De La Soul was ALL about empathy, honesty, love, heart and soul. Don't get me wrong, I love plenty of gangster rap, but De La Soul and ATCQ lacked its arrogance and violence. They focused more on writing engaging lyrics than acting tough or hyping themselves.
MonsieurRondu 3 months ago
@MonsieurRondu Fair enough, but you wanna know why I love gangsta rap the most out of any genre? Cause of it's VIOLENT CONTENT! I'd rather hear a song about murdering motherfuckers than a corny love song, though, I admit De La Soul are pretty good at getting me to the other side with them cause I actually love "Eye Know" and "4 More".

@fleshnbone187 Gangsta Rap should take FULL responsibility for the down fall of rap it portrayed a "positive" image of loose sex, drug use ,killing fellow young African americans and dealing drugs
nykballaz 2 months ago
@nykballaz No, "bling rap" should take responsibility. NWA, Ice-T, Geto Boys and company only told it like they saw it in the streets. De La Soul may not be from the inner cities, so maybe that's why their music has always been positive and carefree. Not all people live heavenly, think about it. Still, gangsta rap is my favorite subgenre and will always be!

sonzothewise 5 days ago
@nykballaz Umm.. I'm pretty sure that those songs weren't positive. Nobody likes killing, you can only get use too it. Same goes for cocaine, opium, meth, and water. Woodie,2pac,bonethugs,nine, and so many others try to display reality. Although when you're looking at reality through a glass mirror, reality isn't always the truth. Rights equal actual wrongs for our youth.

@fleshnbone187 Its a fact that the whole gangster image and all that bullshit/additude that comes with it, killed HIP HOP!
Fact of the matter is, that common' folks confuse that whole bullshit, gangster image , as HIP HOP? rap!!!
Thats a fuckin shame!
Most people who dindnt like rap / hip Hop before, suddenly became hip hop cause of that Bullshit gangster rap!
Read: IMAGO!!!!

@fleshnbone187 what ever you want to believe man..i aint saying it has to be positive...read my comment again !
