Maybe 100 customers at an outdoor restaurant, watching a show that would take at least 100 people to put on. How could that possibly lose money? Good thing it was just a fantasy.
But I remember reading someone's memoirs, describing her aunt's hunky alcoholic (you can guess his ethnicity) husband's short-lived restaurant, on the grounds of the aunt's Lake Michigan mansion. It was during the depression, and finished off the aunt's fortune. I bet this movie is where Pretty-boy got the idea.
I wonder if whomever cast the "Fanchonettes" thought, "Hmmm, how can I get a group of girls who are the exact same height and have the exact same measurements?" And yes, I know women in the 1930's were a lot slimmer than they are now, but it's uncanny how those girls could look almost exactly alike- right down to their body types and faces!
@perfectjazz78 It doesn't look like Catalina's beach to me at all. Maybe Newport, maybe Santa Monica or even Long Beach before the break water. But then again who knows what things looked like in 1935
@jimaroo100 The title of the piece is "Pirate Party at Catalina Isle" plus, a long time California resident identified the location for me as well. Didn't you notice the giant Catalina Ballroom?
It's a 1935 film; amazing that it survived at all. And in 1935, Techicolor WAS a gallant effort. It all had to start somewhere to get where we are today filmwise.....and it's pretty ridiculous to judge a 74 year old film's original quality anyway from one youtube clip
this song dates back to 1933 with the late great Ginger Rpogres singing it and even doing a pig latin verse in it form gold diggers of 1933 check it out i think it is still on here on the tube try typing in the name of the song or maybe the name of the movie to find it it is the original versio in black nad white!
This is an MGM film, not Warners, the song was on the open market, used in a Warners film, but re-used in this colour short. Music was rarely copyright to a studio.
No, this song was originally from the film GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933 and it's full title is "The Gold Diggers' Song (We're In The Money). It was sung by Ginger Rogers at the beginning of the movie. This song became a standard and was later reused and redone, most notably in the Broadway musical 42ND STREET.
This location is the Hotel St. Catherine Descanso Bay Catalina Isle ...It took me forever to figure out where this snippet from Pirate Party was. Built in 1918 ..it is no longer there ..the beach is ...it was replaced by a "beach club" so to speak ..of small buildings where near as glamourous as the original hotel.
So this must be a Warner Bros. movie, since that's a Warner Bros. song. But I didn't remember that they made color shorts. For some reason I thought only MGM was doing that at the time, I guess because it must've been expensive to get to use one of the few Technicolor cameras in existence then.
The song is A Classical Al Dubin and Harry Warren....for WarnerBros movie 'Goldiggers of 1933'....the song is 'The Golddiggers Song'.originally sing it bt Ginger Rogers in the movie
omg, where is this from!?! I have a dance studio in the Chicagoland area and I want to use this song for one of my classes. I have searched for this song online and on iTunes and I cannot find it! Does anyone know the title of the money and if there is a soundtrack?
42nd Street was a broadway hit several years back. This broadway show had the same song in it. I'm sure there's a score available and mp3 of the broadway show available, if not the movie version (Goldiggers of 1933?).
Filmed at St. Catherine Hotel, sadly gone by the mid-1960s. It was located just between the Casino building and Hamilton Cove, where all the condos now are. HC was the seaplane landing area with a big turntable to send them back out into the water.
Every time I see this it makes me want to get over to Catalina as soon as I can; a wonderful short movie & terriffic vacation destination in 1935 or 2008 :)
I like Ginger's version better.

That and the theaters needed technicolor projectors and people to run them. it was a novelty until colour film came onto the market.

Strangely enough Technicolor looks so magical compared to color processes of today...
