The look that crosses between Sister and Brother (the Thorpes) is not right!! Isabella looks like the flirting type if you know what I mean! How rude!! She was talking!! Mr. Tilney doesn't come off as false; much less his sister, But; knowing how I was then/shes alot like me; I would have believed them. How rude!! Almost ran down that poor man!! Thats one against him for me. Besides the way he was looking at Catherine while shes was dancing; and at the bookstore. I would've grabbed those reins.
not even in the 1800 i would walk alone in desolated places with wird people just because they smile at you doesn't mean they won't hurt you. specially someone you just meet.
He's just lied to her and he speaks to her like he's the wise old man. Turkey. They deserved to get rained on. She should have gotten down but she's not used to liers and feels the child. The sister is in league with her brother pretending that Catherine is so pretty to her brother. It's a good lesson to learn. People who flater you for their own ends shouldn't be trusted.
"then...perhaps I should come with you." "PLEASE..." jeez, I don't like the way he said that. It sounded like John Thorpe was threatening her. "Please - or I will kill you."
Oh my goodness. Mr. Thorpe is so creepy...Although he seems more reasonable in this scene than in the book. He just keeps driving on and swearing and talking about himself...
@Wunglepire Read the book version; your skin will crawl. Yuck. He's pushy, rude, selfish, proud, immature, and a big fat liar. Isabella's worse as well-- she exaggerates about every little thing like nobody's business!!
@livn4hevn According to the book, Eleanor is 22. She tells Catherine at one point that their mother died when she was 13. When Catherine asks how long ago it happened, she says that it was 9 years before.
But I agree...she does look a little older than 22.
It's too bad Catherine can't read people. There are so many actions of the Thorpe syblings that she should have picked up on immediately. She was raised to think all people are honest. These girls were so protected that they just didn't know and were easy marks. Bath reminds me of a meat market in some ways but I suppose for the higher class it was a way to meet people whom you normally wouldn't be around. Does anyone know what months the "season" was during?
I would love to live back then........ But then again I don't, for I would be a slave for all the people shown. That is worse than living in this era........
@King01982 There were slaves in England before there were slaves in America. Forced labor for plantations were in the West Indies I believe. And there were slaves in England during this period but they were very expensive. "The Count of Monte Cristo(sp)" shows this. YT has that version. They were a novelty and it was fashion to have one in your household. England banned the act before America. I'm trying to remember dates. Will have to look it up. No offense. :)
@dairshipper Almost running down Mr. Allen should have told Catherine something. And they aren't a half a mile from her lodgings before he starts grilling her about money and proves a lier. Three things that should have raised flags had Catherine known what flags to raise! lol Plus he talks to her like she's a child and is mad that he's caught out in a lie. Imagine being married to a guy like this for the rest of your life. YUCK.
Sorry but the second he stoped the cariage I would have climbed out, called him a lier, that I never want to see him again. I would walk back and try to find the Tilneys, it is Mr. Tilney she is interested in not Mr. I Am Very Rude. Deffinatly would not have stayed for the whole speach, he lied he does not deserve to be heard out.
I feel for poor Catherine. Every girl at some point or another knows what it is to be admired by someone she dislikes and to not have the attention of the man that she wants.

Sometimes it ends with badly, all these first impressions, Catherine is at least lucky she finds her true friends at the end.=)
can't believe, that she just couldn't jump off the carriage after it stopped and run back to the tilneys. Why would she believe that idiot and give a damn about his rude justifications?! ugh!!!

All Jane Austen's works are infinitely better than the films. However, this one doesn't do a bad job. It does skim ahead over some bits, but I suppose all films must do that.
I really love this movie, and I've gone on this Austen-inspired-movie thing and watched this like four times and I love Catherine, she's just that kind of girl who is always willing to give someone the benefit of the doubt. Who couldn't love her? But Isabella! Ugh!

Ugh!

Yeah, john thorpe doesn't seem trustworthy at all... he has the scoundrel's face (ha). the tilney's seem cool.
