Unlike animals we don't need the nutrients to help keep us nest or den bound for the first few days of our offspring's life and unlike mothers in the developing world, where it isn't even that common, we have no need to preserve said nutrients in anticipation of not finding adequate food . This is western vanity at it's worst and a great example of why the rest of the world hates us.

First of all, a newborn baby isn't even capable of eating solid food, let alone the placenta! Second of all, the baby has been hooked up to that placenta for 9 months through the umbilical cord. If there is something wrong with the placenta the baby most likely won't survive anyway.
