Neil was NOT a doctor; he was "pre-med" in college. Meaning the course of classes one takes before med school. He wasn't doing well in school so he quit school when he was hired to write songs. He didn't loose a patient; he tried to help a man who had a heart attack right in front of him. Neil gave the man CPR but the man died anyway. Neil realized he couldn't be a doctor after that. This is what Neil said in an interview.

@tefu9 Hey, he's great, but I know a lot of artists who "compare to him". But having said that, that's one damn fine group of singers I'm talking about. No doubt he's your favourite. Gordon Lightfoot is mine. And I'd give my right nut to see them both in concert on the same stage any day of the millenium. This song is particualrly awesome. My other faves are Brooklyn Roads, Solitary Man, Brother Love's Show, and I Am I Said.
