My friend joined the army. He's seen all the anti-system movies, knows full well of the corruption.  He joined for 2 fundamental reasons:

1) For personal excitement; life is short, he wanted to feel some excitement and feel like he was making a change in the world.

2) Economy. While everyone is suffering, he is already set for life, and he's only been in the army for 10 months. When he finishes his 3-year contract, the job opportunities will be formidable.
