Awesome, I've surfed this spot many times in the 90's and the un-mentoined river bars to the north, pure surfing clean lines, speed trims, and single fins. Thanks for reminding us what surfing is all about. Interesting to see the comeback of "retro boards" as they are called now and the younger surfers trying to experience the stoke from the past, videos like this are gold, cheers.
hi im from pataua. and my dad surfed out there all the time. his name was bruce ryan. please let me know if you did! or have any photos of him! he passed away in 1988. im troy his son. cool thanks heaps
thanks a lot for publishing this. i get a nayve and country feeling while watching it, and it makes me wonder how great should be to experience true surfing. back in the day.
Should set the record straight on this. Jim Coote shot this footage in a crew that included myself, Grant Smith and Gary Easterbrook, living in and around Pataua, plus the usual suspects on film. I transferred it to video (0ver 1 hr) in Sydney in the late 80's and made only 4 copies - Jim, Grant, Gary and myself. One edited copy was released to Dave Boyd later. Not sure how it ended up here (Dave says he did not pass it on) as all the rest did not either. Great footage. One word. Respect. Thanks
My dad is Jim Coote - a Tall, redhead just like me - you couldn't miss him! Mum said that he heard some of his super 8 films had made it on to You Tube, and I think he's not sure where to look. Will need to send him this link.

My dad grew up and surfed at Pataua. I'm living in London now and watching this makes me very homesick! Love the clip though. Awesome waves.
