That might be because you either howled at a stone, never went to the wolf, then howled at another stone OR because you encountered the wolf then told Heros Shade you where not ready to receive the new skill in which case you must leave the area then go back.

I can. He's a lefty too. The game was created with the GC in mind, in which he is, indeed, a lefty. The only reason the Wii features him as a right handed Link, is because they mirror swapped everything. Left is right.

I have the game too and on Wii like on this video. You probably had it on gamecube where map is inverted.

Moreover I had the contrary "glitch" No golden wolf on map (at least I had but not at that place" but while walking I saw something glowing in the night and he was here. I assume you don't need to call the wolf thanks to the stone to meet him but just know the right places.
