What you need to know is that they may only cost a couple hundred dollars but they can grow to be well over 20 feet long and cost thousands of dollars to care for a year. Housing, feeding, vet visits lead easily into the thousands very quickly. You should NOT own one of these as a pet. They are meant to be owned by people who have years of experience with caring for and handling such huge snakes. For the snake's sake, don't get one.

@imjoedewar Also, retics grow at a crazy rate. This retic is a month old and is already almost 3 feet long. At 1 year they can be over 6 feet. Their life spans are very long and they grow SO fast you will have to change what you feed them and their enclosure almost bimonthly. If you want a snake similar, look into ball pythons which can grow to about 5 feet long. If you want something bigger, maybe a boa constrictor. Ball pythons are a great starter snake. :)

Correction to my last comment, the substrate actually did enter his mouth, this video was uploaded in 2007, if you kept feeding him like this, he is definitely dead by now.

Seriously, their digestive acid can dissolve bone and teeth, a little wood won't hurt them -- as long as it is not cedar which can poison reptiles.

Ideally I'd suggest finely shredded aspen, which they love to burrow in and is completely digestible if they do get any in their mouth... but to each their own.

He says the snake is big and healthy so clearly he is doing something right.

Some things I'd like to pint out to you:

1) I would advise you not to just drop a mouse in the cage with your snake given that mice will attack it given the chance. I usually grab the mouse by the tail and dangle it in front of the snakes head, which has never proved to be a problem.

2) Feeding your snakes on their substrate is a bad idea. Unless you want to risk treating an impacted bowl, do it on newspaper in a separate tub.

One of the reasons why pple feed there snakes in a plastic box is to make sure the snake wont eat some wood of his substrate by accident. I think u have to consider doing that to, unless u want to end up with a snake that has a blockage in his or her intestines.
