  • I feel the eyes could have been brought out more in the alien, but it may have been the camera quality I guess, thanks for posting the vid

  • drawing was cool tattoo ok

  • can i use bells distilled witch hazel for diluting my tattoo ink

  • Cool video brah. This kinda changed the way I see tattooing.

  • why don't you just use a thermal copier? thats what i do

  • @CHASCHARLTON why? fore the same reason no artist does , i explain more on how a proper stencil is made and why in my better stencil making video,

  • @TATTOOTRAINING "fore the same reason no artist does "

i have been tattooing for 30 years , i have worked in many tattoo studios over the years and worked 100's of conventions, and your telling me NO artists use thermal copiers to make their stencils, is that what your saying?

  • @CHASCHARLTON gee like i didnt see this coming , as i said artist , i didnt say tattooist , as in someone who pumps out flash in a meat factory. look at any ARTIST doing a PORTRAIT and show me a thermal fax . not only does it not allow you make your own markings the ink is inferior . if you want to have this discussion why dont you do it on the right video .

  • @CHASCHARLTON and if youve been doing it for 30 years why are you on youtube watching beginner videos ?

  • @TATTOOTRAINING c'mon you are joking yea.... i can watch any videos i like , and just because i have been tattooing for 30 years i am not of the opinion i have nothing to learn :)

  • what size liner did you use a 7rs?

  • @nemoede no i was just sketchin the lines were done with a 5 its not that big i just went over inside lines with 3 and outside lines w 5 could have used 7 but only a few lines were even close to being that big

  • BTW-Because of YOUR help my work is beginning to distinguish itself from the typical work being done in my area. Sometimes I hear from the, old fashioned trained guys that my lines are weak and scratchy and light....but then they see the piece again after the lines have been SCULPTED and shaded they tend to go silent. Its funny to see a "tatooist" point at some temporary grey line work and say "those lines need work, they are way too light"

  • @pg1437 i know , i get stuff about this video when i was only ruffing in shit and dont have the actual finished piece , but everyone a critic ,

  • I hit my thigh with 3 drops of black using a 1205M. Went in nice, buttery smooth. I was happy. But I need lighter values for a B&G portrait I want to do so I practiced on my leg with 1 drop of black. It turned reddish purple. No trama or bleeding but the value was unrecognizable. Still waiting for it to heal and lighten up to see what value I got. Is this normal?

  • @pg1437 1 drop of ink and ...... were you cutting it with water? what ink ?

  • is it true some ppl skin doesnt take ink really well? need hep

  • @pelay77 its more the area callus skin is obviously no good. and some areas are very delicate . white ink doesnt work as a large fill as it is opac and doesnt show up well in many skin tones . but why do you ask ,

  • I have issues with my mag jumping out of the tip why does it do that? my artist said im not holding my shader right can you do a demo on the proper way to hold your machine when laying ink and when shading? pleeeeaaassseeeee:)

  • @cdtiedeman if you mean th eneedle tip is jumping around in the tip , you don thave a slight bend to the needle bar and you dont have the proper rubber band setting, could also be your armature is improperly alighed , in short you shouldnt be trying to tattoo if you dont understand how a machine is properly assembled , view my other videos on machines . your "artist" is probably clueless as all hell . its the machine not how you hold it

  • lol the first thing you said in the start........that WAS carbon paper.... :S

  • @mylkie no it wasnt its spirit master paper

  • wassup guys i just started a forum group on face book called "word scratcher dont offend me" please join us and share ur artwork and get advice/give advice and learn from each other see wat works for you, we are trying to get as many membbers as we can

  • do you need to mix 3 different colours of grey to do black and grey colouring? sorry if that is a stupid question.

  • @AdamKwiecinskiArt ... grey is a color how can you have 3 different colors of a color ? what you mean to ask about is VALUES . and black and grey doesnt use any grey color it uses watered down black in different levels to create different or VALUES . see my video called "grey wash redo " people do do a TRUE GREY style that uses the COLOR grey by taking white with varying amounts of black to make darker grey but it is a true grey not a wash . read COLOR theory books

  • @TATTOOTRAINING what do you use to wipe the extra ink off the arm

  • @Scottde420 first dont leave extra ink, dont wait until its all over before you wipe . now what you should be doing is keeping a THIN layer of A&D on the skin at all times . if the skin is dry it will stick and not wipe off . also use good towels like VIVA dont use rough towels and pre moisten the towel with a light mist . so moist VIVA and THIN layer of A&D try it and you will be happy .

  • @TATTOOTRAINING cool picture and thanks for responding so quickly i will give it a shot

  • @TATTOOTRAINING im using a 9 mag, and i always get little dots it doesnt blend well i do great sometimes i try it again and it doesnt work out.. let me know if its me my gear or anything thanks

  • @dectrone a 9mag what? from who ? shading is done with a #8 or at least a #10 needle or "bugpin" a standard #9 is a #12 nedle and is thicker for color work , mithra , needle jig eternaltatoosupply have the thinner shading needles , other than needle size are you using washes or cap methode ?

  • @TATTOOTRAINING thats what my artist calls the 9 mag curved needle, google it and its there.

    i use silverback grey washes

  • @dectrone google it ? i dont think your hearing me a 9 mag is just a 9 needle mag the actual needle comes in different diameter , a standard needle size is #12 but you want to use a #8 or #10 for shading , does the needle package say 1209 or 1009or 0809 ?

  • @TATTOOTRAINING 1209, curved.. something it makes the dotty shading other times not

  • @dectrone the needles are #12 it is for coloring not shading you want 0809

  • @dectrone a 9mag what? from who ? shading is done with a #8 or at least a #10 needle or "bugpin" a standard #9 is a #12 nedle and is thicker for color work , mithra , needle jig eternaltatoosupply have the thinner shading needles , other than needle size are you using washes or cap methode ? is the machine hitting too hard ( too many volts ) ?

  • This guy is a very experienced tattooist and one hell of an artist, and somewhat of a nonconformist which is ok, if your as good as what he is. It seems when you got an artist this good they usually develop mannerisms, tricks, techniques, call it what you want, but some other mainstream tattooists see as odd, or incorrect. But make no mistake about it, artists like this are true innovations of the trade. Outstanding work dude!

  • wow, this guys skin can take ink really well

  • good tip thanx !!! looks great !

  • hey i have a question hope you have time to answer, do you feel you could have gotten the same results if you did this with a large round shader as opposed to a mag, if yes or no why or why not?

  • @silentchild03 me ? no ,...why ? because i have never used a round other than a 7 for some tight areas , a 5 mag can do the same , they have there uses but in general mags are better for me , experience using as many needles as possible is suggested .

  • @TATTOOTRAINING awesome i alternate between a mag and a round shader depending on the piece to get a certain effect i'll either use only a shader or only mags but was wondering what you thought about it as i may be overthinking it.

  • @silentchild03 probably bigger mag bigger area smaller mag smaller area bugpins shading #12 color

  • @wildtatz because i dont use it to lay lines but to sketch them later i go over with a slower bigger gap and comet it ,

  • @rapskk wrong asshole im helping correct the bad unlike you who is not helping at all

  • @Warningsondeafears sorta thats a blackwork or like whip shading where you only use black and the dots get more spread out to make the lighter effect kinda hard to explain bob shaw and spiderwed ( kinda old school ) worked in this manner

  • @TATTOOTRAINING thats true the shops wont apprentice unless you have a portfolio of TATTOOS i know a couple people who are apprenticing

  • @TATTOOTRAINING I had the same problem with people like that when I was starting out. No one wanted to give me an apprenticeship, because most tattooers suck and are afraid of the many artists with actual skills that are picking up the craft. you better get your game up buddy__because there are a lot of damn good artists coming in the game

  • @clotbomba I was refering to MR> RAPSKK

  • @clotbomba oh ok

  • just want to ask what needle are you using for the outline :) ?

  • @TheDJtwisted a 5 liner , the line weight is fairly heavy

  • ur feedback is ridiculously helpfull.

just a quick question tho. wen shading is wat is a propper needle set up. like how far shud it stick out from the tube?

  • @uluvmeJR i have other videos , shader 3.5mm gap , needles protrude a nickle from the tip , ...there are other aspects you have to consider, see other videos on set ups

  • Thanks for the info bro. I have 1 more question what about packing in color. I use eternal ink and can't seem to get ink to come out vibrant. What can you suggest?

  • @jerryda4th i suggest you go to the color troubleshooting video

  • @jerryda4th again watch my color troubleshooting video , that ink is solid and lays in nice, understand when you lay color you need proper hit and go slow and even , first pass opens the skin second lays it in

  • I love the responses from artists that beat their chests because they work in a shop. NEWS FLASH!! Nobody cares. If I walk into a pizza shop and the cook says, 'I make pizza in a restaurant, anyone who makes pizza from home is a fake ass wannabe' I would walk 2 blocks to the next pizza joint and probably pass 3 tattoo shops with artist standing outside smoking cigarettes waiting for customers on my journey to finding a place to eat where I wont get any lip.

  • I got a problem. Followed all your videos tuning, setting up machine, etc etc. My shading comes out blotchy or you can see the individual lines the mag makes. What am I doing wrong?

  • @jerryda4th what needle are you using ? use # 10 or #8 needle,... a standard #12 needle is wider and makes a fatter line , a 7 mag with #10 or 8 needle and proper wash value will help

  • Keep doing what your doing! Your very helpful and informative.

  • the transfer paper that i have does have a yellow sheet in it.. its four layers.. so i cant use it to tattoo someone?. ????

  • @imhotep08 it is a old thermal fax machine paper it is blue or black not purple it is not as thick and the transfer sheet it comes with is thin as hell , use spirit master paper like i explain in another video about stencils watch?v=9OF-WhhhnFA

  • hey did u mix the pigment with water really? for shading? also maybe u can help- why machine stops sometimes when i press a little harder is it poor machine or just that fake skin is shi*?:D

  • @mazadraudzenite turn it up verify the spring tension and gap

  • idk if its just me but his machine sounds like an angry ass bee tune that shit

  • @grimreap93 a single pass liner as you see i dont plant the lines and go pretty fast so it is not really solid i go over it with a bigger gap slower machine to shape theline later

  • Nice instructions

  • Great vid. No bad attitude. You reply to questions. Genuine help. Keep it up, you're a gem. Oh, and by the way, you are better than what you think. Humble too!

  • what are good settings for your machine for doing lines and shading?

  • @FreshInc912 please look at my video list "machine settings " however a liner comes in 2 types and i suggest you use a longer stroke liner and not a single pass liner when your new to this . a traditional shader is 3.5mm gap .018 springs front and back . 400 grams tension . but there is also a short stroke shader for larger areas called a cut back and it has the same setting as a single pass liner

  • Hi. I loved your vid, I have a tat and I need your expertise shading it. can you help??

how can I get in touch with you?

  • @baraka464 pm me sorry ive been busy

  • hey man what did u us to pot for your stensil so it dont come off

  • @Ranmanli see my video how to make stencil stuff

  • that peice came out nice mayne. hell yea!

  • Do You do your own tattoos

  • @2ammo mostly

  • @TATTOOTRAINING What size shading needle were you using?

  • @IHMAIWTD69 7 mag #8

  • Sweet tattoo!! Finally someone who knows and is trying to teach about values. There are a lot of tattoo "artists" that have no actual concept of or any knowledge of the art part of it other than doodling on their test paper when they were kids. Keep teaching bro! For all the rest : listen, study, and practice...practice...practice.

  • Great design and execution, thanks for the info, it's good to have professionals who expend the effort to share with noobs.

  • @sidscifi it wasnt a smart ass comment , and you obviously dont know me for shit . check my comment i have hundreds of happy folks i have helped, do you know what is in that saline ? there are different types . do you know how it will react with a ink? no so why bother, use distilled water. you feeling stupid is no reason to claim i have attitude . maybe its you

  • Good job on the self-tattoo m8! tattooing yourself can be a bitch, i can tell ^^

but nice work good shades ;) although your shading machine was making a weird sound...could be of the quality of the video idk.

anyway just droping by 2 say good work and show some support ( btw trying 2 pullover pick ups with a bike xD hilarious)

  • is it possible to use saline instead of distilled water?

  • @rizthefiz it is possible to use gas. doesnt mean i would ,

  • @TATTOOTRAINING is it better for you to use differnt machines with differnt needles or one machine and switch the needle?

  • @piti305fly multiple machines one machine is for a certain job you cant use it for anything . you should have 3 liners long and short strokes in every set up lot of machines are needed at the least 3

  • shit i deleted someones comment about

"bruising the skin" going over the portrait with water first to creat a midtone to use as a reference to shade from ....sorry whoever

  • i love it

  • Good instruction, but poor quality lighting in the video makes it a little hard to see what's going on at times.

  • Thank you such a help

    regards Symon

  • as you said that the movement of faster is lighter and slower/repeating the area is darker...can it be done with same lining ink or must use differernt shading ink for this technique...!

  • @Thems it not a technique its just how it is , not sure what your asking , have you seen the grey wash redo video about the shading ink ?

  • @MultiBillybadazz well this was the first i had done in over 5 years , it was upside down in a really painful position ( u do know im partially disabled?) , to claim i suck is a joke, i have more knowledge than you ever will. if your so great why are you trolling you tube for information? . im sure you have many videos demonstrating your massive knowledge and are not just talking shit like a little child , right? ....right?

  • @TATTOOTRAINING Dont feed the trolls sir. You obviously know your values, and can lay down good ink. Well done.

  • you can always tell a good tattoo artist by the sound of there machine, if its fluctuating lots then dont bother with them.

  • @fukdyamum uh well allot of folks buy their machines they dont build them , and they cant use them , so the machine may sound fine however theat doesnt mean they are great. youd be surprised how may really good artist couldnt put a machine together

  • great work man i actually have some questions that maybe you could help with

  • haha fucking people amaze me dude ya do good work

  • Wouldnt wanna***

  • I love the comments on here, "i've been tattooing for blahblahblah....." if you're so great at it make your own video as a reply to this to show how much better you are at it. but since you're a professional tattoo artist you wanna do that because the only way you'll teach people is by making them pay you to teach them. Stupid. Thanks for the great videos keep them coming!

  • that fucking tattoo is fucking awesome bro

  • That ink came out awesome!!

  • yo, kat von d started at 14. she dropped out of school at 16 to tattoo. its not uncommon to be that young when you start. street kids!thanks for the videos. very helpful. im 26 and just now apprenticing to learn the technical ends and outs. i can draw really well and tat myself daily. very helpful videos. tell those bastards to you tubes spoons jealousy. ha! im a chick and chicks get the jealous bite from other artist, be confident and dont knock other artist to make yourself feel.

  • @blackhatspice @TATTOOTRAINING Word black! Thank u TAT! Ive been tattooing for just over a year now and I was painting portraits before that.. Its SO hard to get most artists to share cuz they all have that "If you dont know then you shouldnt be doing it" attitude. Ive been tatting myself for practice and to learn techniques such as shading and it was videos like this one that helped me get where I am! Theres an old saying "EACH ONE TEACH ONE"... Keep on teachin man.. Thanks!

  • @Dforssten 1 well amateur you just showed how little you know. its called line wieght and your not supposed to do all lines the same thickness , this isnt a color book . but thats probably the wrong shit you were told. and 2 you also dont know shit about values , what the fuck do you know about how hard i shade. you saw 10 seconds and what does it matter if it was applied hard the wash value won tlet it be aplied too dark . . you havent seen how it healed , better than you

  • @Dforssten well lets see ... i have train dozens into shops have hundreds of people who have learned from me and you dont have one single thing showing you know shit. im going to guess your another fool who probably got fucked over my a shop and are hating because i help people for free. besides i never said i was was some great tattoo artist , im a good teacher probably one of the best , obviously your here because you need help

  • @NorthernExoticPets so youve been tattooing for 21 years yea? so you were 13 when you started

  • naaaah

  • i forgot how cool grey washing is, i've only seen it once on a friend and got it on my shoulder piece, (a Swirl) but the guy i'm learning from doesn't use grey washing techniques, he knicks the skin and goes over it how ever many times he'd need to to make it the darkness that would be required, it'd be nice to actually learn grey wash though, seems like it'd be a lot of fun instead of "guess work"

  • @TheRickyhoe "You never go from a dark value to lite first off " Says who?

  • Good shit.

  • I was woundering, what kind of ink are you using??

  • I was woundering, what kind of ink are you using??

  • @pontasii black shading wash i made with kuro , look up my black ink video , all black ink is the same , the consistency is what is different

  • nice picture was he flicking the earth

  • How do you get the shading so smooth? I mean sometimes I get it smooth and on some parts of my leg it gets hatchy, like what do you turn your p supply to when shading and shit? also I dont have an actual shading machine i use either my rotary for that or my tunable bolt m series

  • @ferlin1216 I have that same problem too. I bring my needle out no more then the width of a needle but in this video it looks like his is Wasatch out there lol. I do mine like the for really fine lines.

  • shading is good--go dark in the beginning because it will lighten up after the entire healing process. Important thing about the tattoo is the final healing process--that you have to think about from the beginning. Who care what it looks like now, what happens to it after 2 weeks or 1 year?

Your line work is sloppy, especially on the "planet earth" of the tattoo. You should have blood-lined it. You're line work and shading is also sloppy on the necklace.

  • can you use just regular printer paper to trace and transfer the image to the skin?

  • @madmax92gsx thats what i do lay printed image on the spirit master paper and trace

  • @madmax92gsx yes ive done it

  • How far do you stick your liner and shader out of the end of the tube? I find that if I barely stick my liner out of the end of the tube it's hard to follow my line because of the excess ink. ANY tips/advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Someone's probably already said this, but Thanks for the advice for all of us beginners who really want to learn.

  • Two things one .... damn! ;) ...... and the other has to do with the trasfer paper.... you said that if it has a yellow sheet then its carbon paper not master now are you referring to the sheet that go's between?

  • @Shadowratt88 yah if there is a yellow sheet at all , spirit master paper has no yellow sheet and is obviously thicker than carbon or fax paper

  • Thank you soooooooooooooooooooooooo much!!

  • Thanks man!! Hope to see more vids later on from you!

  • It looks very good! You should do more than acouple year!! What are you using to shade with? I assume a mag..?

  • @RIFFZ614 7 bugpin mag

  • i was just saying you did an excellent job i have been tattooing for years and i honestly don't think i could match you, i could try though lol good job

  • @grindreaper thanks i really only do a few pieces a year its not my thing much any more but i cant stand seeing bad info passed around

  • can you shade with black outline ink i am apprentice but sometimes i am shy to ask because i am new

  • @sancolepremillz yes black ink is basically all the same it just has different consistencies, not all shading is done with washes its just easier to learn with them , you can use drawing ink pelican or talens in large caps 1 full 1 with 7 dropsink 1 with 3 drops ink ,.. but liner ink is basically the same as drawing ink as in consistency i will try to explain in video soon

  • awesome tat bro, fuck the haters looks good

  • @grindreaper Haters ?

  • If machine is in good working order, voltage is good- giving a full stroke and then some, but lines are still light and there is trouble getting solid black to go in; Could a machine hitting to softly be the problem? And if so, would it be a matter of increasing tension on the rear spring to harden the hit? Hope that made sense.

Thanks. Besides the tattooing knowledge you have, your also a very good videographer.

  • @pg1437 sure the more resistance ie rubberbands bigger mags requires more voltage but usually if its not going in just add another volt until it lays it in but no you dont add tension to get it to hit harder more tention than what is required to keep the harmonics is a waste becouse it require more voltage just to override the tension -

keep the tension within a rang and leave it you only add voltage to make it hit harder

  • With a stencil transferred to skin like usual.Ive got a question for you.I have an apollo machine.I keep burning through the contact spring no matter how i adjust it.Any suggestions?

  • @snappybones thous are same as spaulding machines probably has a 22uf capacitor > use a front spring with a silver contact and if its a liner use a 33uf 35v cap if its a shader use a 45uf 35v cap

  • I have never seen anybody ink through paper like that.Cleaner no doubt but i would worry about the paper ripping

  • @snappybones ? how else would it be done , this is the only way ive done it in 20 years

  • thanxxx bro nice video and really good done!

  • NIce result, but I don't agree with your thermal fax junk remark, the thermal fax copies are fax better than those made by hand, and its less time consuming.

  • @jakoxxxxx i was referin gto the term " thermal fax paper " thermal fax is not the correct shit to make a stencil with , spirit master paper for mimeograph or "dotto" is the thick purple stuff , if you have a yellow sheet with the paper it is fax film used in thermal stencil machines , they suck , spirit master film with stencil gel will stay stronger than anything , you also cant make proper stencils with a thermal machine , they are for flash artist only ,

  • @jakoxxxxx well your wrong noone who does realism uses them , and that is a lazy ass comment so say you dont have time to make a proper stencil ?

  • @TATTOOTRAINING whatever works for you is the best way. Lazy? Just too busy with work ;) thnx for the "professional" reply ;)

  • @jakoxxxxx please do a video of how to make a thermal stencil for a color realism piece

  • @TATTOOTRAINING No time, but Niko Hurtado will ring a bell? I've seen his dvd from the gnome workshop site, and he demonstrates it. I completely understand your opinoin, and I'm not saying that you're doing it wrong, I think its amazing that you do it by hand, I'm just saying that you can achieve the same quality with thermal printers. But you always gotta do what is best for you. I can't say anything bad bout your vids and work, its honestly good!

  • kOOL STUFF...THANK YOU

  • i do my stencils the same way! but this guy gonna wipe his stencil off b4 his even done the outline! lol

  • @sick149kids Wrong , it was still there 2 days later , if you use spirit master and stencil gel it is not coming off,

  • nice.. alright i got a kuestion... so when u apply the white ink to a tattoo. when do u do that? because I used it on a tattoo once and u kouldnt even see the white ink..

  • @tight4soundz always last or it will get contaminated from other ink . hit it with a long stroke liner with a totally clean tip , small round loose liner / shader needle

  • @TATTOOTRAINING do u leave a space for the ink blank on the skin, or do you like put the white on top of the existing ink?

  • @tight4soundz the ink around where any significant white willl be diluted so it isn't heavy and it will only fade out to a blank area , ink is transparent and white on top of color will show threw . on B&G portrait you are ok with putting it in on light grey with a loose 5 or 7 round shader

  • this video reminds me of the first time i tattooed my own self when i was younger. i tried to stand up to clean everything up when i was done and i fell down because my leg had fallen asleep and when i fell i spilled ink all over ha ha ha

  • @lucasmorter HA no shit i relate

  • @TATTOOTRAINING nice. honestly i should just never tattoo anyone. i bought a decent setup for a freind of mine who is a great artist and wanted to learn how to tattoo but once i got the stuff he just wasnt interested anymore. but hey its still fun so i continue to cover my legs in shitty tattoos. i wear pants all the time anyways

  • @lucasmorter bro you are so honest! and very funny comment!

  • holy crap, you can tattoo yourself?!

i have no problem getting tattoos or tattooing others but i just can't do it to myself... lol

  • @sarahv748 mental block after you do it enough times you dont notice the pain , if you take em well then its not much harder

  • how do you get the stencil to stay good because when i wipe it wipes it off,if u can let me know soon that would be really heplful because im starting to get tattoos cust.every day...........thanks

  • @940Jr why are you tattooing people if you dont even know how to apply a stencil? seriously im not being an ass , but if your going to be serious about this you should hit pause and learn all the basics first so your work is clean and safe . please consider not tattooing for a couple of weeks and learn all the basics . i have a video on why to use to make stencil stay on .

  • @940Jr you can use some stencil applicator it helps

  • VERY HELPFULL THAK YOU!!

  • THIS HAS BEEN VERY HELPFULL FOR ME THANX MAN

  • could you give me an idea of what measures of water to ink you are using to get each shade?

  • @kittysparkleeyes watch the video , cut the liner ink 50 / 50 to get a base then 50/50 to get a %50 and so on 25 12 6 3

  • how do u make ur ink clean away in 1 sweep i wipe my ink and its goes everywere lmao D:
