Where are all the "young men" the song praises? For the most part these reenactors look overweight as well as being too old. I guess authenticity is not really an issue here.
often by other men who were given some training by the mentioned VMI cadets and sometimes West point cadets. West point officers would instruct sergeants and then the sergeants would instruct the men.
That would be the 26th North Carolina filmed there at Latta Plantation in Charlotte, North Carolina. I am happy to say I'm a proud member of said regiment.
Hey 26th NC, I read an OR report that at Gettysburg the 26th NC captured "2 Stand of Colors". We believe it was from the 151st Pennsylvania. The 26th NC broke the "Iron Brigade".
Is that so? I know that we took on the 24th Michigan...but I don't think we engaged any Pennsylvania regiments. However, other regiments in our brigade did take on Penn boys. I'll have to check. But if your interested read Rod Gregg's "Covered With Glory" to learn more on the 26th's role at Gettysburg.
The 151st PA covered the Iron Brigades retreat. Then the 26th NC and the 151st PA were "20 paces" apart. The 151st PA lost that fight and retreated. The 26th NC said they captured "2 stand of colors" but "carelessly" left them and moved on. Seeing the report on the loss on the 151st PA, we believe they lost the "2 stand of colors". We are working on ALL captured Union flags during the war.
The Iron Brigade consisted of the 7th WI,2nd WI,24th MI, and the 19th IN. The 149th PA was apart of Biddle's Brigade which was to the left of The Iron Brigade they were assaulted by the the 47th and 52nd NC whom were also apart of Pettigrew's Brigade like the 26th. As for "advancing" the only advancing the 26th did from the ridge that day was three hundred yards towards the Federals before coming under cannon attack.
The 14th Nc's sharpshooters captured a flag from the 150th New York. The 104th New York "Wadsworth Guards" lost flags. The 149th Pa lost both flags. The 16th Maine tore their flags up, the pole and what was left was "captured". We do know the 142nd Pa did lose a flag also. Daniel's CSA brigade took many colors, this had to have been from the 143rd Pa. Dont forget the 6th Wisconsin was also in the Iron Brigade but was in reserve at first along with 100 men of the "Brigade Guard".
Many 1st Corps flags were captured during the 1st Corps retreat from McPherson's ridge. The 24th Michigan and 151st Pennsylvania lost the highest amount of men during the entire battle.
continued) They camped the night in herbst woods but they couldn't press any further attacks that day having lost 500+ men and both your Col. and Lt.col kinda sapps fighting power away.
When the 19th Indiana (who never liked their position) were outflanked they were hit hard. I have read each of their regimental histories and many books at the Library of Congress on the Iron Brigade. All say they did not lose a flag. Many Union flags were captured Day 1, but odd not many historians know many of them.
My ancestor was the colonel of the 151st Pennsylvania. He himself was actually a casualty. He was hit in both legs by a rebel bullet. He was carried to the Seminary for medical treatment and was the last patient to the leave the hospital there.

I had a family member that fought in the Civil War. He was captured at Gettysburg and was confined to Point Lookout, Maryland.

By the spring of 1864, the Confederates called out 17-50 year old males. Who do you think was guarding Union prisoner camps?
rebel2276 4 years ago
how were the confederates trained? anyone know how?

The VMI cadets trained 15,000 Confederates. These were mere boys under 18 training grown men.
