I remember that getting to this point alive was pretty hard, and that when you did, you would be left with too little health and lives to finish the final bosses. I used to solve this by pressing Start on the second controller to activate the Green Dude before the other one loses the final health of his final life. The green dude starts with full health and lives at this point.
Even though the Super Nintendo was a better piece of hardware the Genesis still managed to compete, for a long time. I like this sound track, it's a good beat.
I still have this game along with my sega.
