The game which inspired my pseudonyme (and avatar also) around 12 years ago :') I used to let this song play in my bedroom since I hadn't a proper sound system. I did that again on my computer a bit later when I was playing at it on an emulator. For the record, at this time I though the drink was Zup instead of 7up. Anyway, the ad worked perfectly on me !
This version of the intro blows the Genesis one out the water visually, but that music is God-awful in comparison.
In general, I prefer the Genesis version. The music is notably better, the sound effects are MUCH better, and it even graphically outshines the SNES version on some levels. This is probably due to the fact that the game was designed for the Genesis, and the SNES version is a port.
I still remember the cheat to find the Cool Spot every level! When the level starts, pause, up, down, left, right, a, b, c, b, a, c ... ta daaa .. lol, can beat the game with that.
The music, colors, background, and spots (which looked similar to yarnballs) all reminded me heavily of Bubsy.
...But whatever gaming purists may say about it, Cool Spot was an ingenious tie-in from Virgin interactive and 7up marketers and brought about a very similar 2D side-scrolling 'Milo' game from Nestle around the same period in the mid '90s (in Australia)
The hero was represented in the Nestle game by a thirsty whitish-blond skateboarder as opposed to a non-human spot or animal.
@Pommes1983 Maybe it's a regional thing. In the UK the GameBoy version was full of Virgin Cola advertising (it's not a defunct brand). The bottle in the intro and the health pickups were all Virgin Cola bottles and in the bonus stage you had to collect letters that spelt Virgin. I was surprised when the ads in the MegaDrive version were different.
omffffffff yer cool spot so good, seriously i wud swap gta jus to play it again, actually i think playin it again might ruin it, i'm jus guna live with the memories :)
The utter decline in superb 2D platformers like this is a sad loss for vidoegaming, as identikit World War 2 games are churned out. Although there have been some great 3D games as well eg on N64, Dreamcast and Cube in general imagination in videogames has declined, not improved. Perhaps one of today's videogames developers could explain why games from this era had more fun, cool and imagination in its little finger than this generation's?
While it was an advertisment on the outside, at the core its one of the best games for the SNES/Genesis, and thats no lie, dont be so quick to judge it, give it a playthrough.
Uhh, this game was NEVER "underrated". It got really high review scores when it came out. The character animation in this game basically blew everybody away, because before this game most games had crappy 4-frame walk cycles, and 2 frame attacks, etc. This game set the bar for sprite animation in side scrollers.
I don't know what happened to my copy of this.
I never got rid of it, but I can't find it anywhere... Just like Glover for the N64 :(
