its a shame that its in rough shape, but since its running well with 367K miles, Mercedes-Benz did something right! I saw a 300D like this on Autotrader with 151K (which is nothing) and in mint condition at a Mercedes dealer in Reading, PA and it brought me here. Its old, but STILL so appealing in the shape that its in!
Great car and one of the most over engineered cars. I got one as my fist car. It was a 82 300SD turbo with 390k miles that my grandfather got new in 82 and was garage kept or under a car cover when ever parked. He drove it across the county for 15 years and always kept it well maintained. The only parts replaced were normal wear items. I got it when he wasn't able to drive and it drove like new and never let me down. BTW I still have the car in storage with 436,000+ miles and still going strong.
I am looking at a 1978 right now that is in such pristine condition even the AC still works and the interior is literally spotless; thank you so much for sharing this video because I am a young driver and I do not know much about cars outside working in the town garage. Now that I've seen more about the car I can go to the dealer with intelligent questions.
Fog lights work!, Now I can't wait for the next temperature inversion so I can use them. I need to take it in to a car top place so they can fix the sun roof. Some yo yo sealed it up, probably because it leaked. I think I heard the motor trying to open it. Not sure. Thank you!
I would have liked to see where the control for the sun roof is. Also how to turn on the fog lights. I have one exactly like that, only 215,000 miles. Interior much nicer too, but a few other problems of its own.
@jimn35 Sunroof control is on the dash above the climate control 3rd one from left. Pull out head light switch to get fogs. I have 2 of them so any questions ask away.
You left out a few very important details like ABS and power steering. It would just be more useful if you included those few facts in your next videos.
Well after 28 years of constant use ,wear and tear are noticable at any car. But this car after 28 years and 367 973 miles started up from first try. And it still is running.
During war in my country ,they used these cars. They were running em on oil that was picked up from power outposts. This car is tank. If it is properly maintain it ,it will probably outlast it's owner. Best series ever.
Do you know Mercedes almost went bust because of this series?
@MeskovicZ I wasn't referring to the entire model of car, I was referring to the condition of the car. I have no doubt that if this was actually taken car of throughout it's lifetime it would have been a respectable vehicle.
ok first of all for the driver side windo its probly the switch or a fuse and for the RPM guage its a relay under the hood. Its fine this car is good just vacum it out change your fuel filters. im sure the fuel tank needs a good cleaning but thats easy because you dont need to drop the tank just unbolt it out of the tank. Do a valve adjustment and a diesel purge and shes good as new 367,000 miles is broken in 700,000 is high miles
@LongLiveTheKing1986 yeah in 2009 I hit a Renault Kangoo Cargo van with my 300d and i destroyed the van frame damage every thing and my car had a blown out turn signal and the ruber on the front bumper came loose that was it
You know, you talk a lot of good about older Mercedes-Benz vehicles... and almost nothing about older BMW vehicles. BMW is a nicely made car like Mercedes.
For that kind of mileage and for a crappy owner who had this, this proves old Benz's are probably the most durable cars in the world; like an F150 :).
This looks like my old 300D Turbo I use to have. These cars were solid, but the only bad thing about the diesels was the under power of the engine and the fact you probably wasn't going to outrun a cop. (lol)
The older Mercedes Benz cars were built like tanks, they were very reliable automobiles and the new ones are too, but it's something about those older ones that makes you feel like your in some bank vault.

woah, sure you can trust on old Mercs! Anyway i laughed a bit when kyle flipped the armrest and when saw the tear was like "I'm not touching that!" ahahah
These old 5-cilinder engine's are bullitproof. Somethimes you see them for sale with about a million kilometre's on the clock, and still goïng strong. (I guess that makes for about 600.000 miles?)
EASILY the best car ive ever driven. i have the 85' model but theyre so identicle, he sure got the part about the doors being like vaults XP i nearly get shell shock everytime i close it on my way in. ONE PROBLEM i have ever had with mine, was the starter soliniod craped out 45 mintues from home, but after a fe tries i got it to start, tried to start it the next morning and it was completly fried. BUT ihave had it for 2 years and that is the ONLY problem i have ever had (besides the spedometer)
Most reliable car in the world. My dad and I bought one of these in El Paso, Tx about 2000 miles from home. They were pretty much giving it away so we took a bus and we drove it back. We drove the car day and night without ANY problem whatsoever. When we got home the next day we noticed it didn't have an air filter and the oil was as good as mud. But the car doesnt seem to care about anything other than getting you from point A to point B safely!
I wish you had bought this, Kyle. I'm currently restoring an '85, would love to have seen before and after updates with this car. Congrats on the purchase of the Ford. It's a very nice example.
This is a 5 Cylinder not 6. Works better with a short stroke Crank like in the 2.7 5 cylinder Sprinter. For a diesel that is better suited to a truck very good on fuel.
slipping trans, or just bad oil.. dunno much about automatics though, my -83 240D euro runs and drives great! since its standard equipped everything works on it even after sitting 3 years. 360 000m is like 550- 600 000kms if im not wrong.. its not even half it will do if maintained. mines only got 335 000 though... :P
This engine made it the first ever turbocharged diesel car
The engine used to be the most powerful diesel engine in passenger car application.
This engine made it the fastest diesel car worldwide
Diesel technology has come a long way since... But still, this car deserves a lot of respect. I used to own w123 Benz and it was totaled by a semi wheel braking loose from a truck coming from opposite lane. Needless to say - the old car protected me well!
i was looking at some of your tahoe vids since im looking at getting at getting a tahoe soon for my first car, and at the end of the "2001 Chevrolet Tahoe LT w/ 210k miles Start Up, Engine, and Full Tour" video, there is a mercedes that looks surprisingly like this one. It's at about 7:50, so do you have any idea if it could be the same one? They look practically identical.
i have 3 start request can you do a start up of 1990 or 89 91 plymouth laser a 1994 lincoln continental excutive series and a 1986 cadillac eldorado and also a 1996 lincoln town car excecutive series
You will see the upholstery on the W123 300Ds like this one in really good shape because they are vinyl. The interiors on the W126 300SD S-classes are more tattered because they are leather.
@Saabkyle04 this vehicle an 3.0 liter Inline 5 cylinder engine it's part of the OM617 engine family they're known for nearly bulletproof reliability and they sound great too btw great vid
In EU we have different headlights, everything else is pretty much the same, my dad had one of these, he said that they could go around the world 3 times without any servicing...
I hate to say it, but this car has lived it's life and it is now time for it to either be put down peacefully, restored by some guy that is obsessed with that make, OR given to a highschool student so he can beat the shit out of it until it breaks. I wouldn't buy this car.
This one is not a good indicator of what these cars are capable of. It's clearly been abused, a well treated 300D wouldn't run that rough. That being said, these things routinely rack up 1,000,000 miles or more.
i personally dont like how this benz looks... and its a woman repeller(at least in my country) where i live women like a guy with a modern car(2005-current) xD still im consious that 20 years ago it was a great luxury car, and... a mercedes will always be a merecedes :)
I don't know why Mercedes insisted on covering the headlights in grey fibreglass for the American market in the 80's. Surely they could have complied with standards while giving us nice full lenses like the European cars got. Really murders the look of the front end.
@JaSt321 Not exactly, the standards until '83 lr '84 I believe required cars to have2 or 4 standard size round or square sealed beam headlights. It would have looked goofy either way, but I totally agree with you. It does ruint he front end quite a lot.
Very poorly maintained example. Allmost all examples I have seen, had been taken a better care. Transmission definitely slipping, and engine mounts gone. Still the mileage ain't so miraculous. I've seen many over 600 000 miles on, and still going strong ( of course that means, that the car is cared well.) Robust build quality, got to say.
@sprojojoing Oh I got to add, the examples I told were all here in Europe. Don't know many MB sold these in USA (maybe not so much ?) Then again the climate is much harder here due to Winter / salted roads)
The fact that it starts on the first try with minimal cranking, and that it runs and looks as good as it does is amazing!!!! Now, would I want to drive a long distance, probably not, but this one might be a good candidate for a good restoration job.
Kyle, Interior seats are not leather but leather text. Leather was an option in 83. Mercedes changed the transmission in 1984 and continued it into 1985 which was the last year for that body style. Problems with the car included rust on rear floorboards and wheel wells, air conditioning, cruise control and tachometer. I'm guessing the engine mounts needed replaced on this car which is causing the vibration. Great video and great observation on Mercedes Benz superior engineering.
367000 miles? That thing has beaten badly. I can see the shaking too, poor thing sounds like a lawnmower too. Why would it be shaking like that though? Bad mounts?? This car needs a good owner, they're really not that hard to maintain.
300K miles is about average for these bad boys on ebay. These things are immortal. You can't kill them no matter how many miles you put on them. And they are so easy to work on. You can refurbish one easily and have it last you another 100K miles.
The thing i like the most about this car is that even though it's had a pretty rough owner (i'm guessing) it STILL AMAZINGLY actually runs! My uncles 06 Highlander has major cracks in the leather and they don't even drive often!
Its really funny coz here in Germany loads of people (like me) love the US-Spec bumpers...and pay a shitload of money for them...you always want what ya can't have;))
you have to remember, at the time (198os) mercedes was still making their cars properly, so this car is very tough and reliable, and remember german cars are the best.
@strumem90 Haha yeah. The LF9s were bad. Probably one of the biggest reasons why diesels were thought to be unappealing in the US and Canada, at least in the cars.
@7477238 for sure lol.... the 350 Olds Diesels (LF9) in the Olds, Buick's and Caddy's of the era....yah...they didn't last to long, Fords first truck diesel, the 6.9L IDI, they weren't to bad actually, GM's 6.2L (truck) diesels, they were problem prone from day one. I will say, as of now, 2011, I think North America is finally taking this diesel thing seriously
i just saw that car the other day

@Saabkyle04 this vehicle an 3.0 liter Inline 5 cylinder engine it's part of the OM617 engine family they're known for nearly bulletproof reliability and they sound great too btw great vid

The camera picks up well the vibrations, i can even see the hood move up on down. Sounds like the belts are rubbing on something.

My dad's brother had that W123. 200D model. Same colour, EU Spec. It was a great machine. He sold it and got a BMW E34 525i 24V after it.
PS2Gameplays 1 year ago
In EU we have different headlights, everything else is pretty much the same, my dad had one of these, he said that they could go around the world 3 times without any servicing...

I hate to say it, but this car has lived it's life and it is now time for it to either be put down peacefully, restored by some guy that is obsessed with that make, OR given to a highschool student so he can beat the shit out of it until it breaks. I wouldn't buy this car.
goldeneye4564 1 year ago
this car is perfect for the night of the living dead........
FORDGTGULF 1 year ago
This one is not a good indicator of what these cars are capable of. It's clearly been abused, a well treated 300D wouldn't run that rough. That being said, these things routinely rack up 1,000,000 miles or more.

i personally dont like how this benz looks... and its a woman repeller(at least in my country) where i live women like a guy with a modern car(2005-current) xD still im consious that 20 years ago it was a great luxury car, and... a mercedes will always be a merecedes :)
LordKevin92 1 year ago
I don't know why Mercedes insisted on covering the headlights in grey fibreglass for the American market in the 80's. Surely they could have complied with standards while giving us nice full lenses like the European cars got. Really murders the look of the front end.
JaSt321 1 year ago
@JaSt321 Not exactly, the standards until '83 lr '84 I believe required cars to have2 or 4 standard size round or square sealed beam headlights. It would have looked goofy either way, but I totally agree with you. It does ruint he front end quite a lot.

What can i say the W124...is a tank! 367k and still going strong.

Very poorly maintained example. Allmost all examples I have seen, had been taken a better care. Transmission definitely slipping, and engine mounts gone. Still the mileage ain't so miraculous. I've seen many over 600 000 miles on, and still going strong ( of course that means, that the car is cared well.) Robust build quality, got to say.
sprojojoing 1 year ago
@sprojojoing Oh I got to add, the examples I told were all here in Europe. Don't know many MB sold these in USA (maybe not so much ?) Then again the climate is much harder here due to Winter / salted roads)

makes a great restoration project, just a little time and effort and it would look great in a classic car show
2004NissanSentra 1 year ago
i think that weird acceleration is the transmission slipping then the clutches finally grabbing.
sideburns2009 1 year ago
The fact that it starts on the first try with minimal cranking, and that it runs and looks as good as it does is amazing!!!! Now, would I want to drive a long distance, probably not, but this one might be a good candidate for a good restoration job.
impaladave77 1 year ago
Kyle, Interior seats are not leather but leather text. Leather was an option in 83. Mercedes changed the transmission in 1984 and continued it into 1985 which was the last year for that body style. Problems with the car included rust on rear floorboards and wheel wells, air conditioning, cruise control and tachometer. I'm guessing the engine mounts needed replaced on this car which is causing the vibration. Great video and great observation on Mercedes Benz superior engineering.
Cars4Life324 1 year ago
367000 miles? That thing has beaten badly. I can see the shaking too, poor thing sounds like a lawnmower too. Why would it be shaking like that though? Bad mounts?? This car needs a good owner, they're really not that hard to maintain.
MrNismoSR20 1 year ago
that is a crapload of miles.....yeah.....a crapload. Hey yeah its shaking but, she's had a good run.

hondaftw1234 1 year ago
300K miles is about average for these bad boys on ebay. These things are immortal. You can't kill them no matter how many miles you put on them. And they are so easy to work on. You can refurbish one easily and have it last you another 100K miles.
85ZingoGTR 1 year ago
The thing i like the most about this car is that even though it's had a pretty rough owner (i'm guessing) it STILL AMAZINGLY actually runs! My uncles 06 Highlander has major cracks in the leather and they don't even drive often!

Its really funny coz here in Germany loads of people (like me) love the US-Spec bumpers...and pay a shitload of money for them...you always want what ya can't have;))

its kinda of a crappy Mercedes
wow, I'd never thought i would have crappy and Mercedes in the same sentence
cmarshall1018 1 year ago
you have to remember, at the time (198os) mercedes was still making their cars properly, so this car is very tough and reliable, and remember german cars are the best.

but even after all that, the noise and the shaking.....give me this diesel over any North American diesel of the era
strumem90 1 year ago
@strumem90 Haha yeah. The LF9s were bad. Probably one of the biggest reasons why diesels were thought to be unappealing in the US and Canada, at least in the cars.
7477238 1 year ago
@7477238 for sure lol.... the 350 Olds Diesels (LF9) in the Olds, Buick's and Caddy's of the era....yah...they didn't last to long, Fords first truck diesel, the 6.9L IDI, they weren't to bad actually, GM's 6.2L (truck) diesels, they were problem prone from day one. I will say, as of now, 2011, I think North America is finally taking this diesel thing seriously
