  • I have never powerlifted but was thinking about trying it is my butt supposed to touch the bench?

  • great!

  • correct me if im wrong but isnt it better to arch your back? cause you do use your back in benching and its strongest at the contracted position... when arched.... basically allows you to get more power into the lift...

  • @Hadselll that is in essence what he is demonstrating. Yes, arching shortens the distance and by putting your should blades together and benching off of your traps you get the most out of your shirted bench.

  • if its not raw it doesn't count in my opinion. The only thing this guy really does is 315 for 3 and @ 198, that's not elite by any means.

  • @blake102584 Mike has pressed 460 RAW at 198, but the purpose of this video is to exploit the most effective way to get the most out of a shirt for competition. Thank you.

  • That arch can't be good on the back. I understand the concept of less distance, but on way that is good on the back with the amount of stress that is being put on it.

  • @ajlaxmn you are right. Powerlifting is for sure not a sport for the squeemish. But then again, racing a car at 200mph is not safe, nor is ski diving. LOL. We do a lot of foam roller for back recovery and a lot of dynamic stretching. So for the amount of time that we are arched, we more than make up with pre-hab work. Ever onward.

  • @ajlaxmn its lots safer than lying on the flat bench, spine can handle weight up to 1500 lbs and deltoids WILL NOT, and thats what you are doing when you lie flat on the bench, all the weight is on your shoulders which can lead to injuries if the weight goes really heavy, so thats why powerlifters developed the safest way to bench press.. watch some dave tate's tutorials.

  • excellent form!!! on all i have seen!!!

  • Theres no way he would break a record in a power lifting competition, if he arches his back!

  • @NOKlas99 Check the rule books for the IPF, APF, UPA (all allow an arch) I think you are thinking about lifting your butt off of the bench. All federations allow for arching the back as long as the shoulders and the lifter's rear end are on the bench. Youtube the best benchers (Frankl, Meldelson, Laura Phelps). This will help to educate you on competition lifts. Hope this information is of use to you. Thank you.

  • @MPTPowerlifting this video gave me the answer i was looking for! i am taller than most powerlifters and i was running in circles trying to figure out how to get mad arch going for me. i see that most top benchers are on the short side and the bench doesnt really change height. next bench work day i am going to raise the bench up by putting plates under the corners to practice the arch. i know its not regulation, but its all for the sake of practice.

  • @spidanez Practice is a lost art in Powerlifting! Good luck with your journey my brother!!!

  • Call me a noob but how come he always arches his back?

  • @SkylineR034 the greater the arch, the less distance the bar has to travel to touch your chest for the press call. Much like, the longer the arms, the less distance the bar travels from the ground on the deadlift. In competition benching you want to reduce the distance as much as possible. Check out Mike's bench press set up video. It will explain it all to you if you are looking to bench in competition. Hope this helps. Ever Onward, Monster Garage Gym.

  • nice

  • he has t-rex arms, its like lifting 300 pounds for a normal person

  • @speedii69 So true. Scary thing is that he pulls big too (600LBS at 198). Darn freaks. LOL. Monster Garage Gym.

  • this dude kicks ass because he can bench all that weight and does not look like a whale like similar bench pressors who can do the same weight but weight 850 more pounds than him!

  • @ydna681 So true. Mike typically weighs between 196-206LBS. In June he just pressed 611LBS weighing only 196LBs. Mike also has pretty much the best work ethic I have ever seen in a powerlifter. He earns all of his lifts through hard work. Thanks for the feedback. Monster Garage Gym.

  • that kicks ass, this is the way real benching is supposed to be without drugs and by professionals who have had many years of experience.
