@clubhouseme -- CBS has the AFC and FOX has the NFC. Like you, I preferred the old way. Can't stand those stupid dancing robots on FOX and endless promotions for their network programs running across the screen.
The Browns won their division in 1985 with an 8-8 record & the Raiders had home field advantage in the AFC playoffs with a 12-4 record, only to lose to the eventual AFC Champion New England Patriots.
Is it my imagination or was McGruff the Crime Dog moonlighting as a voiceover announcer for NBC? (Seriously, I',m going to check Wikipedia to see if that's the guy who did McGruff's voics.)
You don't have to; I already did. Apparently, that was the same person, if I'm not mistaken. The person who did McGruff's voice was known as John M. Keil; he was born in Rochester, NY. He did it for many years, according to Wikipedia.
Of course, this was the year the Bears won the Super Bowl. The Browns were 8-8 in 1985, but won the AFC Central, and almost beat the Dolphins in the Divisional Playoffs. The Broncos were 11-5, but missed the playoffs. The Raiders won the AFC West, but lost in the Divisional Playoffs to the Patriots. Doesn't mean much now, but I miss old school football.
That was actually a great game and one of the FEW times Marc Wilson didn't negatively impact my childhood. He hit Todd Christensen with like a 8 or 9 yard touchdown and the Raiders escaped with a 21-20 win. Still remember most of the '85 season like I'm 6 years old again.
I remember around 1989 the Patriots were awful and they were getting blown out and I my dad mentioned that the Patriots suck. I quickly replied quickly while laughing is because MARC WILSON was their quarterback. Marc Wilson had that horrible dear in the headlights look.
Wilson and Schroeder are the only QB's for the Raiders (AND THEY'VE HAD SOME SORRY ONES) that I expected INT's on throws...the old "hold your breath" feeling
I liked it better when NBC did the AFC and CBS did the NFC.Now I don't know who the fuck does what.

You talk about getting reved up! When I heard that guy say The NFL plays here! Miami! --I knew there was about to be a shot of Dan Marino!

Did they have localized tags for each market? I can't make out what the announcer says in the beginning after he says "The NFL plays here..."

I think that what that announcer said was, "The NFL plays here, America..."
