Smoke bomb is a euphemism. WP is primarily an incendiary munition utilized to generate casualties and to destroy military material. Its secondary function is a visual marker or spotting round. A usually unsuitable tertiary use is to screen movement by blocking line of sight.

It is never a proper illumination device.
