Watch The Who live and watch the way Keith is almost constantly watching Pete and John is almost constantly watching Keith and Pete is almost constantly signalling to Keith. They were playing off the seat of their pants and needed to keep an eye on each other to see where they were going next. That's why they were and always will be the best live rock stage act.
THE quintessential opening rock song! GREAT example of a four piece act. Entwistle pouring over with the melody like thunder over a valley. Moon cascading all over the place. Roger doing his thing. And Pete! My Gawd, that guitar solo tone! RIPS Heaven & Hell into one!
The Who have always been my favourite band and always will be. I just have to say that between 69 and 73 they were quite simply the best band on the planet by far, both in the studio and live on stage. Tommy, Live at Leeds, Whos Next and Quadrophenia are all simply quite awesome. Whos Next is a brilliant LP but how good should it have been had it been finished as Lifehouse and again had Live at Leeds been released in its entirety in 1970. They were at there peak individually and as a band.
If you listen to the first few numbers of any of their 75' soundboards I defy you not to literally feel the drive and 'Propulsion' of their funk and groove. To me they will always be the best rhythm section in rock music.
@mamieike Again - I will agree with many of the folks here that Zeppelin were pretty much toast, especially as a live band, by 1973...1977 was the height of their heroin use and apathy towards their audience, so no doubt the shows probably sucked. And I bow at the alter of the Who - who were no doubt one of the best live bands on the planet in the early 70's. My only point was that Zeppelin had a heyday too: from maybe 71 or 72, instead of the bloated has beens that SRTS portrays.
The Song Remains the Same was Led Zeppelin at their worst. Drugs and dragon pants had taken their toll by then. Now, the Royal Albert Hall show from 1970 was Zeppelin at it's best - stripped down and built like a tank. Much like the Who'sperformance here. Comparing this performance to TSRTS is like punching an old woman in the face. It aint a fair fight.
yeah... well... thanks for the lesson Mr. Rock n roll scholar but the very fact that you compare those 2 it's proof that you seem to miss the plot of this big rock n roll movie; it's not sports. It's not Dan Marino it´s music. You don´t analyze it or compare it. You just ENJOY it
@MrGramparules Didn't mean to piss you off. Led Zeppelin were a great band, no doubt. It's just my opinion that by the time they did TSRTS they had become bloated and too big for their own good. For that matter, nearly every band out there suffers the same fate. I personally prefer most bands early performances. The drugs and excesses catch up to most of them sooner or later. Royal Albert showed a tight band that just played their asses off without all of the pretentious bullshit.
I have seen the oo over 20 times and first saw them at the Sundown Theatre at Edmontom London. I saw Led Zep at the same time at Southampton-There was no contest. The Who always came out on top. I love zeppelin but I love their English folkiemess. The Who were a mixture of total raw energy, comedy, aggression and musical skill with some of the greatest songs you would ever wish to hear live. Not a girlie band and by gum there will never be a band that will come close to The Who circa 1970.
@ArtVandelay421 I don't think anyone thinks "Song Remains the Same" is a good example of Zeppelin live. If you saw the "Led Zeppelin DVD" footage (particularly the Earl's Court show) you'll get a better sense of the live Zeppelin show. I agree the Who were a better live act (as great as Bonzo and Jonsey were, they lacked the PROPULSION of Moonie and Ox)...but its a closer race than SRTS would have you believe.
@MiRaleigh I don't see what's so bad about SRTS, it blew me away, really. Some incredible guitar work there. I'll have to give the Led Zeppelin DVD a listen though. My buddy has it and says that it's pretty good.
@MiRaleigh BUT WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF,Do not compare a group that is based on riffs (PTA) and another group that relies on ultra rhythmic riffs ....
Listen to Dazed and Confused or Celebration day of the year 1973 and you will see that the rhythmic Bonahm-Jones is equally if not better than who ...
@MiRaleigh Zepp live in 77 and they were nothing like SRTS. SRTS is a collection of edits from a variety of shows, strung together. Zepp had the ability to suck live, which they did the night I saw 'em. Went home afterwards & burned my Zepp records, they were THAT bad!
Agree with you...love Zep but live...I found them dull. I still remember when Page pulled out the bow during Dazed and Confused and seeing a lot of folks head to the concessions. With the Who...they just kept you mesmerized. Plus, I always felt the Who respected their fans where as Zep could care less.
@MiRaleigh You have a point and i agree with you but to say that Jones and Bonham didnt have the propulsion of Entwistle and Moon is really misleading. JPJ and Bonham carried along (and sometimes led) and syncopated the riffs and grooves of Page; whereas Entwistle and Moon where basically just feeding off of Townshends chord patterns.
@bondurango That's highly unlikely - so many of their best gigs were not filmed at all, like the 1971 gigs, which, in my opinion, are the best of them all.
Check out the Young Vic concerts (one of which is included on a second cd with a new expansion of Who's Next, visit amazon and you'll see), or even some 1971 bootlegs, not ONE bad performance.
@bondurango I've had this on video bootleg for about 20 years, I've certainly always thought it was their best live show of the ones available on boot or authorized release.
Now, can't you see why the Who were the best live act of its time...They took you to a place no one else did and the pacing of their shows were spot on...Look Ilive Zep also and saw them live as well. But, the Who were so much better live...just look at the recorded evidence. Let's see The Who - Live at Leeds...Led Zep live is ??? Song Remains the Same??
@thewhochilipeppersU2 you could just play it on a regular film movie projector, and then just videotape the projection with a regular camera, sort of a "cheap mans telecine"
super show, who posts this stuff? god bless you
