Factory Girls were mostly Irish young women that worked in the textile mills in Lowell, Massachusetts around the year 1848. Due to terrible working conditions and long hours ( they worked 14 hour days six days a week having Sunday off) they formed a union called the Factory Girls Association that organized strikes. They would sing labor songs when marching for better wages and conditions.

I believe the song is about these women.

@cmacado Right... and the fact that dave sings and writes about his childhood kinda trumps that. I dont think he was round in 1848 This song tells the story about the women of Ireland and how, due to a poverty stricken and war torn country, they were forced to work in order to provide for their families. The line "drinking buttermilk all week and whiskey on Sunday" shows that they worked hard all week in order to enjoy the simple pleasures on their day off.

Nostalgia and loneliness, in short. The song is about an old woman who remembers her friends in pictures and the voices in her memory, how even though she was poor she was happy when she was young. Whiskey on a Sunday was written about a man outside a pub in the early 1900's, which is when many girls were sent to work in factories. The music is upbeat but the lyrics are lonely in the end - she remembers she took someone's pride who had captured her heart and then wishes he was with her.

It is also about David King's parents. His mom worked in a factory where she cleaned laundry for a living. She is now a widow and lices alone. I love the final part about King Richard because he is singing about his dad, Richard King, and it is very clever. Also, if you alread you all of this than I apoligize for making you read all that.
