  • @MamaMathews3719 This is the most ass-backwards thing I've ever read. Do you honestly believe this?!? I have driven this car to work (about 40 miles round trip) 4-5 days a week all winter long and 1-2 days a week the rest of the year since I bought it in 2005 and it's never broke down or left me stranded. This built engine has been in a couple of my cars since 2002 needing nothing but basic maintenance. This is at 500+whp! Still think they're made wrong? I think you're made wrong! :-)

  • uhhh my car is pretty quick stock i got a 1990 ECLIPSE GSX and I smash hondas all day long, i can keep up with EVOS and STI's but I'm no longer stock but Yea these were the fastest 4 cylinder cars of there time

  • @nikedunks7 In an old car and driver I have, the 1995 GSX did the 1/4 mile in 14.9 seconds. Finding one that's still stock is darn near impossible though. Good luck!

  • @turbomiragedude The Stock 97 C280 will do the quarter in about 15.5 seconds. 0-60 around 7.5 seconds. Not bad really for a 4500lb sedan :p

  • @cr123555 They are only unreliable in the wrong hands. As with any turbocharged performance car, you must follow the maintenance schedule closely for the car to live a long life. I've owned a few of these cars since 1998 and have found them to be extremely reliable, especially considering that I've more than doubled the horsepower and am running many stock drivetrain components. Starting off with a nice, low mileage example is the key, which is getting hard to find.

  • @turbomiragedude well i no a guy in CT who buys them and referbishes them back to stock or gets them stock and just cleans them up. they usually have like anywhere from 70k to 100k miles on them but they have all new stock from the mitsubishi dealer parts. he usually wants 4 grand for it after words but i dont ant to buy it even tho its referbished and have it shit the bed. i need a realiable car also and i heard that these cars are junk. you think i should take a wake at that kid who sells them

  • @turbomiragedude thanks to u im getting a red 1990 talon tsi awd. its been completely rebuilt by a guy who is well known in my area for working on dsm's. so he has the shell and now hes taking the parts he has, referbishing everything making sure everything is good, so hopefully i will have a good realiable talon

  • @hppyadam Thanks! I have a two step, but find that it "shocks" the suspension and driveline too much for my taste. The approach I use costs you a tenth or two in the 60ft time, but rewards you with reliability as you aren't snapping axles, driveshafts, etc.

  • @turbomiragedude From what my DSM buddies say (i wouldnt know what they're talking about, i drive an auto TSI AWD) you're usually ok as long as you let the clutch out tiny bit right before you launch to take the slack out of the driveline. Leads to much less axle snappage.

  • Hey Man! Launching any small engine 4 cyl AWD car is tough due to physics working against you. What has worked for many people is to try a two step that is triggered off of the clutch pedal. It's a no-brainer and makes the launch much easier. Tools like DSMlink have this built in. Good luck!

I noticed the launching on this car a little more difficult than my FWD's. I wanted to ask how should I go about getting a quick launch off the line like you did.I seem to bog out alot.Idk what im doing wrong. I read alot about clutch slipping. Any tips/help? Btw I got a 4g63t Cyclone w/ 18psi on a 20g. In case you wanted to take the hp into consideration. Thanx in advance

  • In my experience, getting one that's been well maintained makes all the difference in the world. Also, it's important to understand that they naturally require more care and maintenance than a Civic, for example, due to the complexity of the drivetrain, etc.

  • Turnera1: I'll probably catch hell from everyone here, but here's my take. After polling people for 20 years, the only AWD driveline that can take repeated hard launches is a first gen Audi quattro. Subarus have crappy transmissions, but the rest of the car is really good. Mitsubishi AWDs vary wildly: some hold up well, some people have replaced every part in the driveline at least once. Audis are WAY more expensive to fix than the other two.

  • Actually... yes there is. It is a much shorter route to run the exhaust by the driveshaft, then have onle a small 45* bend and straight out the back on an angle, rather then having 2 90* elbows to have the pipe come out straight.

  • I actually only run that crooked muffler once in awhile since it's a little loud for commuting. It does provide a nice straight shot out of the back, but doesn't appeal to everyone. I normally run a magnaflow muffler painted black. It's a bit quieter and looks 100% stock too!

  • On my 2g I ran a flowmaster 70 painted black with a ?silver line? 3" baffled tip. looked very nice. I guess since all my turbo car's have never had full exhaust (dump pipes usually) I never thought about keeping the flow going through the two 90's out back.. You should get an electric cutout and throw about mid way, and when you want the quicker spool/power just hit the switch. Good way to keep the cops off you, your ears from buzzing on daily drives, and constantly switching exhaust's out.

  • It's always worked the best for me. I've never broke an axle, transfer case or transmission component and I think this launch method is why.

  • i need help. i have a 90 tsi awd. its all stock with 163,000 miles. yesterday on my way to work everything was fine. then when i got off, on my way home i noticed the car was sluggish and wasnt boosting. the turbo wasnt kicking in. it normally did 10 psi. there arent any weird noises or smoke, just turbo stopped boosting. help me its all stock

  • you have a boost leak check your lines and pipes

  • Dumping it doesn't deliver a better 60' time with my setup. Most AWD cars require this type of launch or the suspension balance gets upset.

  • the only reason the 7 bolt gets crank walk is because the main bearing is misaligned with the crank open your crank and realign it and problem fixed

  • no i dont have a vr4 galant 6g i wish i did though but ive had a few friends with a 4g63t and in fact ive been around them for some time and ive always seen them running 12psi but i do know the g63b does have a turbo model in the plymouth colt sedan that runs about 8psi

  • well then u have a 1g non turbo 1.8... if they are on 12 psi they have it set that way or maybe they were set higher, but 1gs run 8 psi with like a 3 psi creep

  • gotta let the clutch out a bit faster. i have a 2step with a 16g and i launch at 5500rpms and spin the tires. full bolt ons, a shep stg3 trans, act streetlight flywheel, and a act2600 lets me do about 1.8s 60fts at the track

  • No, the clutch slip is just fine, just needs a studder box or a higher launch point overall. My 2g is set to 5750 and its probably too high bc it just spins and spins and spins

  • If I use my stutterbox or launch higher it spins all 4 tires through first gear and then second gear is boggy. This is the best way to get a nice launch in 1st and full steam in 2nd.

  • Do some research. SRT4 is faster than either with a 0-60 time of 5.6 sec. A 1997 GTP is recorded to do 0-60 in 6.6 sec. 1st gen Eagle Talon does about the same as the GTP. I have a 1995 2nd gen eagle talon. They are rated at 6.4 sec 0-60. All Talons and SRT4's will corner better than a GTP.

DSMs are pretty slow stock too, and will most likely lose to either, but put in about $500 and they would win. Spend half the amount either skittle or gtp costs, and put it into the dsm, and neither would stand a chance.

  • i lost brain cells following your logic.. 1gs fwd or awd turbo are quick stock.. 2gs are heavier and have smaller turbos stock but they still move well... GTPs are newer, uglier and still slow and will not lose to any dsm unless it is modded and not just intake and exhaust

  • 1g has a smaller turbo than the 2g hence why the 4g63 engine in the 2g cars have 210hp vs the 1gs having 185hp

    though the 1g weighs 2800 pounds the 2g weighs in the 3k area this is why the 1gs are so saught after they are lighter and because of that they are in fact faster

  • 2g turbos are smaller.. 2gs have more power as the compression is higher and the boost goes to around 10 psi where the 1g rarely goes above 8 to 9

  • 2g's weigh in at about 3400 lbs, and don't forget about good ol crankwalk! 6bolt blocks FTW

  • actually the crank walk issue yes was in the 7bolts but were more notorious in the 2g turbo models the 7 bolt was also in after feb 1992 -1994 and didnt have an issue with crankwalk like the 2g's did

    im a huge fan of 1g's i own a 93 eagle talon though its a dl ill be dropping a 4g63 in it down the road as for now im sporting the 4g37 lol

  • Sorry sir, but the reason the 2g's are rated at 210 is the raised compression. They also spool faster because they have a smaller turbo. In case you were wondering, a common upgrade to a 6bolt motor when in the process of rebuilding is to use 2g pistons.

  • for free i picked up a 93 eagle talon sadly its the 1.8 but until i have the cash thats what im driving eventually im going to be swapping to a 6 bolt n/a 4g63 and ill most likely be building high compression i wanna squeeze as many ponies out of it as i can with free mods ill be building more for handling than anything because im a huge HUGE fan of auto x and with an up on suspension dsm tops my list =]

    of course a 6 cyl engine will be faster than a 4 cyl stock but the market for performance is pretty much what concludes the speed of are cars along with tuning abilities

    worlds fastest dsm is a 2g 6.9 seconds 1/4mile at 197mph

  • a turbo charged setup of 600hp on a heavy ass pontiac family car would never run an 8. Ans 10 grand also wouldn't cut it for you as your engine would need 7k+ worth of attention for the internals and machine labor to be able to rev where you need to to run lower than a 10. Then you have drivetrain and suspension, your trans alone would be over 3k worth of work. Your sadly wrong my friend. Dump 2k into a dsm and you can get low 12's. Dump 2k into that GM and you will get nothing. End of story.

  • man i'd love to have an awd. im selling my 240 and buying a local fwd tsi, i want to make it fast but i know traction will pose a threat to good times.. so far i've come up with a Quaife lsd, stickier tires, and somehow run shorter springs in the front, and stiffin the rear shocks for less weight transfer :/ anyone else have good suggestions??
