I suppose I shouldn't be surprised to find Rory covering a Leadbelly song. After all, Irish band Taste where a blues band. Nor should I be surprised that Rory is brilliant, after all "It's Happened Before," and I have no doubt "It'll Happen Again".
Did one of you had a look at the audience ? Rory must have thought, he´s in an " old age home ". He gave his best as always and was a little disappointed and asked himself, why he was there. You can see it in his eyes - his face ever was a mirror of his soul.
And that guy who interviewed him , what a self-exposer. Not even knowing his age. But Rory´s reaction: Your mathematics are better than mine: Wonderfull and never compromising.
This world was never meant for one as beautiful as him
This is just haunting; beautiful. For these four minutes, he owns you. He was always passionate, but this is dark - almost desperate. Gripping. A complete contrast to the dry and rather patronizing interview Gay does with him. The version from the '76 Rockpalast is also eerie, owing to how he sings up the scale in unison with the guitar. One of my new favourite versions, thanks Padraig.
Got my beer at hand, and YOU playing... here's thinking of you today sweetie, and all the wonderful memories. Rock in Peace beautiful... miss you. XX
I love him to bits... One a those dudes ya just feel like you know him from his music alone. When I listen to him everything else just goes away, he gets me right down man, right down, only Rory and Trane get me like that... I miss him and I never even knew him.
Rory played at a place near London called Whitton in a pub once called the winning post. It must have been before 1970 because my farther refused to go and see him because they were charging sixpence.
Thanks for sharing this piece of gold. I remember seeing this on the late late but could never remember what year it was recorded. I was 10 at the time. The memory of this performance has always stay with me and it was when I started to discover the musical genius that was Rory Gallagher. 5*
This song is not that difficult when you use open D tuning. Give it a try and put your're own style on it. Anything is hard if you're trying to sound like rory, but try the open D, I think you will enjoy the tone. Let me know how it turns out.
Actually 4fingersinge, Rory's playing in DADGAD- a tuning often used in many traditional Celtic tunes as well as occasionally in bluegrass ("I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow" being one example that quickly comes to mind). Same tuning Jimmy Page's "White Summer" and "Black Mountain Side" are played in.
The alternating bass with the thumb between the 6th and 4th strings is the technique to master if you want to nail the droning fingerstyle rhythm style Rory's employing.
I remember staying in to see this on the box back then. We saw so little of Rory on tv then and it figures by the way he's interviewed just after this, GB interviews him like nobody has ever heard of him before. Great posting P314, Tks 4 this.
It's a shame how little media coverage Rory was given really, when i was younger i'd never heard of him until i really started getting into older music but everyone had heard of Thin Lizzy and they gots so much radio play, Rory got nothing when i was growing up.
@padraig314 me father always went on bout him, sayin he was the best. i passed no heed til i read hendrix interview,,,,,,when asked how it felt to be the best guitarist in the world he said,,,,,,,,,dont know , ya wanna ask rory gallagher,,,,,,,,,i thought'' i gotta see this guy,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the mas was a genius...........RIP rory
@padraig314 ..It's frustrating that he doesn't get the same exposure as others, but, Rory was passionately dedicated to his craft and refused to pander to trends or even radio, and placed his craft far above commercial consideration. I think it's up to us to keep him exposed... such as this great upload. Cheers.XX
I've heard about this performance before, but I thougt it was going to stay locked up in the vaults with everthing else! Cheers Padraig, really classv video!!!!
I was lucky to get this, at a gig recently i was wearing a Rory t-shirt and this guy came up to me to cause of it, turned out he taped this so he gave me a copy plus a german concert. So next gig you're at you know what to wear!
Yeah I'll hav to get it in the wash quick, cause I'm going to see Chuck Berry on the 24th of March in Letterkenny!!!!!! What German concert is it, if you don't mind me asking???
You're going to Chuck? I still haven't decided cause i live in Cork and Letterkenny is very hard to get to. I'm trying to persuade one of my friends to drive. I only heard about it last week too.
The German concert is the Karussell Special 1980, i've posted one track from it and hope to post Shadowplay in the next day or two. Moonrocket has uploaded part of it already too.
@padraig314 Have to disagree with you on this. I think there is far too-much reverb on the vocal which spoils it for me in comparison to other live versions. Still a great song though!

@juicytool Yup, it'd very definitely DADGAD. Not Irish, but used a lot for Irish Trad since the Bothy Band.

bloozplyr is correct. Open D is DADF#AD rory used the G instead of F#. Thanks for pointing that out blooz. Gives it that nice Celtic tone.

in fact black mountain side was an uncredited cover minus the lyrics of an ancient celtic song called blackwater side!
