Had a friend and he was riding his bike and someones rottweiler was off their leash, the dog chased him down and ripped is calf muscle clean off his right leg and the owner was boot kicking the dog in the face to get it to stop... A poorly raised dog of any breed shouldn't naturally engaged in such agressive behaviors. There are plenty of bad owners of other breeds but you don't hear about blood thirsty golden retrievers.

I wish anyone who was afraid of Rottweilers could meet my boy Tonka. He's 16 months, 130lbs, and the biggest goofball! You know how you see people put hot dogs or whatever in their mouth and the dog takes it gently? Well I could put a crumb on my lip and he wouldn't hurt me. You could kiss my dog on the lips when he has a bone in his mouth and he wouldn't budge or stick your hand fully in his food bowl, with no response from him. But he guards his house and parents well :)

My sister went looking for my mom and went into their house. BIG mistake. The dogs chased her and the cocker lab mix bit her! The pure bred cocker was too small and fat to catch up, and I think that if the if the lab mix wasn't so fat it would have caught her...

Its a fantastic pet..extremely fun loving and loyal..Probably the best dog ever , once its trained

However..

Kinda difficult to train...Very destructive , and needs a lot of attention.

Dont make this your first dog.

Our Rottie was such a Mama's boy. He was 120lbs of pure goofiness. When my wife would come home, he would almost do the truffle shuffle..funniest damn thing you had ever seen, but would cower into a closet during a thunder storm LOL But if you tried to mess with mama or the baby..he was 120lbs of pure warrior! 3 of the greatest years of my life were because of that big goof ball. My friend has a large and beautiful Rottweiler whose name is Sally who is nine years old. She was born in 2002 but she was adopted in 2008. Whenever i visit my friend, I always meet Sally and i love it when Sally lies on my lap. Last year, My friend adopted a puppy rottweiler named Rosetta because Sally tried to give birth but fell into a coma and miscarried. Sally nearly died. Sally acts like a mother to Rosetta. Sally is my best friend as well and i will still love her when she dies.

I haven't personally raised a Rottweiler, but I've been around them quite a bit. Very powerful, but also very friendly, provided they haven't been abused. Highly intelligent and easy to train, but surprisingly they also shed quite a bit. Not too large for most people, Rotties make good pets as long as you're good to them.

I had my rottie Velvet for 9 short years, most loving animal I've ever had. I miss her everyday. Anyone who talks poorly of the breed obviously doesn't know them. They are animal that needs to be raised and treated with respect and if so, will that love and respect 1000 times over. She never barked except to tell someone to watch their step, she was a great 'babysitter' following my son and grandmother everywhere. Never have I felt as loved and safe because of an animal in my life. Rip V.

Every dog has its flaws, small breeds like yorkies have napolean issues, big dogs like great danes will leave their bed and take up all of yours, meduim dogs like german shepherds can get just as overprotective as the rottie can. this aint true. rotties are one of the most aggressive breeds out there. you always hear stories about a rottweiler killing a small child, but you never hear stories of a golden retriever killing a small child. im not saying all rotties are aggressive, but i wouldnt recommend taking that chance when you have kids in the house..

I have two Rotties and a Chihuahua puppy and I've never been nervous with my two big babies being around the tiny puppy, however my friend's husky kept trying to snack on the puppy. My two hang out with me on the front porch off leash while the neighborhood kids come over to visit my odd pack of pups. All of them are well socialized with children and other animals. I'm a dog trainer and my go to dog is the Rott because they're easily trainable and medium energy.

@mimifail12 I've heard people make this analogy before but I think it's part of the reason Rotties get such a bad rap....if a Cocker Spaniel or a dog with a small bite force bites you, you can cover it up with a bandaid. If a Rottweiler exhibits the EXACT SAME behavior, it'll most likely result in a hospital visit. The dog isn't any worse, it's just a matter of physics. I believe, even though smaller dogs cause less damage, the same training and socialization needs to happen.

@zafeamoon They weren't bred to be attack dogs. They were bred to be cattle droving dogs, carting dogs and guardian dogs (much like Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs or Great Pyranese). Some people just don't have the energy levels to match a lab. I know I can't handle a lab, Rottweilers match my energy level and are GREAT family dogs and require very little effort to train.
