I was a student at U of Texas in Austin in the fall of 1985 and remember being at a bar one night after seeing comedienne Sandra Bernhard at Liberty Lunch. Well.....Sandra showed up at a bar I used to go to and we started talking, and the talk came around to Joni! We both agreed that her new album was great and that this song was our favorite! She was so cool!
This album was my intro to Joni Mitchell's genius and therefore my favorite. Although I loooooooved poring over her ill lyric sheet and making movies in my daydreams to these words, I would still giggle through this one cuz it sounds like she's saying "impossible Big Bird". ;)
Never mind some of the lyrics, dig those airy keyboards. Joni is and was ahead of her time. This may have been an eighties song, but Join still has it.
I always felt that this was Joni's ode to John Lennon. During those days, weeks and years following his death, many artists found there own ways to lament his passing. I think this was Joni's. "You may say that I'm a dreamer..." from Lennon's Imagine. References to "Give peace a chance" at the tail end of the song..
joni mitchell is the best songwriter ever ! Life , love + disappointments she tells it like it is .when the album " DOG EAT DOG " came out in 1985 it was not the success that it should have been I think it was ahead of its time + a view of what the world became.this track was my favourite + one of joni`s very best.IMPOSSIBLE DREAMER - that`s me !
Phil - check out the fact that Black Ken Doll is only a mere 25 years of age. I concur. Impecable taste---and he's generous enough to share with us all. Of course, Joni rules. Thanks for your comments.
Don't get me wrong, it is still incredibly genius, but certain things (like the drum machine - sounding beats in Shine) just don't work with her incredible-ness
@mikaboy13: The keyboards/synths on this album were done by Thomas Dolby who was considered at the time to be one of the best in the world and still is. So, although you may not like Joni's 80s sound, she was certainly working with top people. Personally, I love this 80s sound of hers. I've played this album to death.
you know your my buddy no prob...ive heard there is gonna be a tribute to joni here in my city....im going to check it out and post pics/videos i hope....take care!!!

I love her to pieces, but the thing that isn't as appealing of her later work is all the synths she uses... To me it doesn't do her justice!

are you talkin about the newist shine album or when she changed her music up in the 80s?
blackkendoll82 3 years ago
A little bit of both.
