My mother was born in Youngstown, Ohio among 5 other children. Her parents worked in the Steel Mill industry and she tells horror stories. Most of them began circa 1970, right around the time before figurative slave labor markets opened in Asia and Nixon took us off of the Bretton Woods exchange. I don't blame China or Asia in general for the loss of well-paid unionized jobs for honest work, I blame the avaricious corporate titans who've owned this country lock, stock and barrel since 1980.
The Heaton Hopewell blast furnace went out of blast when most of the workforce left to join up for the War of 1812, so there is no way that furnace made cannonballs for any war.
My father was born in Warren,Ohio but grew up in Youngstown went to Ursuline high school -he worked in some of the steel mills back in the late 30's and early 40's. He grew up in the great depression and now may he R.I.P he past away in April 2008 he was 81 glad he died before he saw this 2nd coming of another depression.
Youngstown is a dump. Period.
