It seems that children have a much easier time learning. I am a new Sp Ed teacher, and wanted to be able to communicate with a few of my students who have hearing challenges, and am so glad I found this. In my quest, I practice with my children who seem to instinctively know what the signs mean after only showing them once or twice! (For me it takes much longer). If you're considering ASL for your kids-just dive right in, they'll take to it like a fish in water! (VERY AWESOME!!!)
Both my high school and Middle school only taught Spanish, Japanese and French. I really wish they taught ASL. My mother is deaf and my dad is Hard of Hearing so I've been learning ASL from them since i was little. And I know there's plenty of words that I don't know so I can't wait to get into college and take an ASL course.
I just start to learn ASL recently, am hard of hearing. I can sign some simple words now. I joined a great deaf daing site, ----Deafornot dot c om----, and met some good deaf/HOH friends over there. They help me to learn ASL.

I would love to do this, my only problem is if it takes credit card information... I'm a bit iffy on that. Since so many places give away your information. Would you mind telling me if you're going to sell my credit card/other info to other companies before I decide to purchase this?
@ResaChan Hi! PayPal is the service used to process payments. They are a very reputable company (the biggest internet payment processor in the world). If you don't want to give your credit card info to them (I never see your info) you can also use a check. They will process checks. Sorry to long to respond!
@julcmz200 There are no good websites that offer free lessons. Anyone who is a skilled, qualified ASL teacher has spent a great deal of time, effort and even money of their own to become a qualified ASL teacher. So, like any other professional, they appreciate compensation for the services they offer. You won't find one that is less expensive than mine.
Thank you. I've been interested in sign language for a while now, but my interest has recently become somewhat of an obsession. My high school offers ASL, but I unfortunately have no room for it in my schedule at the moment; I really appreciate lessons from a qualified teacher. :)
It would have been nice to know before I went to the website that it wasn't free. So I just wasted my time. But I guess it is still cool that you took the time out to create the website to help people learn it that can afford it. I just wish I could find a really good place to learn it for free. They didn't offer a class for it at any of the high schools I went to. I wish they had.
@HALEYPIEJUNE16 The website clearly states that each module is available for a small fee of $5. That's actually an incredible price considering how much you'd pay for the same instruction at a local college or even a community education program. Really good places to learn it for free just don't exist because, like any professional, ASL teachers work hard to develop their skills/talents and deserve to be compensated.
I want to learn ASL even though I'm Turkish. In my country, sign language isn't common and I don't think even hearing impaired people can learn it. I heard that they are still improving sign language. I guess we are 50 years behind from other countries. What a shame!
@Arneilla Turkisk Sign Language likely isn't standardized and you're right, many countries where there are Deaf people are far behind where countries like the US, England, and others are as far as their treatment of Deaf.
Rob, thank you so much for putting up the website and such great instruction for us. I was completely lost trying to figure out which dvd's or videos would give me what I was looking for and then I found your video. I thank you and the hearing-impaired boy I'm about to adopt thanks you. :)
@rawmark Thank you so much for the kind comments! I appreciate it! Just so you know, we prefer being called "Deaf" rather than "hearing-impaired." We don't look at our deafness as an impairment. *smile*
@BYUFanatic Rob, I was using the term, Deaf, and then some politically correct folks, corrected me and told me I should not be using the word, Deaf. Thank you so much for clarifying this for me. :)
@rawmark LOL. The "politically correct" folks are actually politically INcorrect. *grin* Culturally Deaf people prefer to simply be called - "Deaf." (Notice the capital "D.") Glad to help clarify that. ;)
My school only offers Spanish. -_- I'm a lover of foreign languages including Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Korean, and Russian. I suddenly just got interested in ASL and learned the alphabet from a friend.
I grew up using ASL with my Deaf father. I watched your video and plan to visit your website. I really enjoyed watching you. I have to check the site out. They have ASL in my high school, I teach it, and at a local University; however, due to budget cuts both programs are going. But at the hs, they want to introduce Arabic and Hindu. It doesn't matter that I teach ASL in one of the most dense Deaf populated areas in the state... go figure.
@missfaetoo It's frustrating when some administrators look at ASL as a "cutsey" language that is only offered as "fluff" and that other "more important" so-called "world languages" are placed above ASL in importance/value. Sorry that the ASL program got cut!
For the time being, they are keeping the program... we'll see. Now the students are of the mind that they are being asked to do too much work for "only an elective." (Their words not mine.) They want "A's" but only want to give a "C" effort. Too bad for them, it doesn't work that way in my class. lol
I really wish they would have taught ASL as a foreign language in the high schools in my area.... That would have helped a lot. The only option I had in high school was to take either French or Spanish. So I had to learn the ASL that I know now from only my mom (She's hearing- impaired). I've been practicing for years, but yet I still feel like there's still so much more to learn!
@Kristiniskool Keep practicing! *smile* Like any other language, ASL takes a lot of time, effort, and dedication to become fluent. There are a lot of colleges that offer ASL now and I'd recommend checking them out. Or, you're welcome to check out my online lessons. Good luck!
i so agree. i wish there were spanish, french and ASL being taught in my school. unfortunately we only have spanish in my school. not even french. i dont want to have to wait and learn sign if i ever get to know a person who is deaf and i dont want them to resort to having to read lips all the time. i got the idea and motivation to learn sign from watching the abc family show switched at birth.
@yoshii2011xo That's fine. Simply pick a hand to be your "dominant" hand. Just make sure you don't keep switching back and forth (that becomes distracting). So if you like using your left as your "dominant" hand, then go for it. *smile*
im only deaf in one ear so i read lips. But i want to start learning sign you helped me heaps :) apparently expertvillage is shit and doesnt know what there talking about and i spent ages learning off them. so now i have tto start over again -.-
Hey Rob, I have been on your website all afternoon watching your free lesson videos and I am proud to say I have mastered memory of signing the alphabet and when I have some money spare after Christmas I would love to sign up and use my summer holidays to learn sign language from your videos which have been fantastic so far. Just one question, I live in New Zealand, does American sign language differ to New Zealand/Australian sign language much?
Thank you so much! I need to learn ASL because I will soon be deaf. I started learning form a good book but I acquired bad habits and need to see actual signing. Most lessons on youtube focus more on the people who do them rather than the content, are too short, poorly structured or too timidly signed. Or, funny!! they have nothing written and require you to HEAR. This set of lessons gives good explanations, is well paced, and has no sound . Reading exercises are great; hard but useful.
@cocosgeta Hi, and welcome to the world of ASL! I'm glad you're learning to sign. *smile* A book, no matter how good it is, simply cannot replace a signing model. Videos are good, with live interaction being best. I'm glad you see why my videos are so different than all the others on YouTube as well - because I focus on using the language to teach the language and I put a lot of quality work into creating each video. Good luck with learning!
@BYUFanatic i am new at being deaf and i am lucky cause i can talk but sound weird. and im new at learning sign language and reading lips is is very hard. thnk u
Thank you for these videos! I am a pharmacy student and I have been interacting with a lot of deaf children, and I only know how to sign my name because I had an elementary school friend who signed -- I hope to learn a lot from your videos so I could communicate with the deaf children. Thank you again!
cool i just started nursing at a school with many handycap students and many deaf kids, they have to see me with their interpreter but it has opened my eyes and id love to learn to communicate with these kids and others myself ;)
thank you so much. i am just going into high school but unfortunately there is no ASL program or club. i have been trying to self-teach myself but it is very hard. thanks i am gonna keep working at it(:
Although I take a class at my highschool, I sometimes feel as though I'm not being pushed enough by my teacher. In my spare time ASL is my hobby, seeing as I plan on turning it into my future career. Thank you for making this website, I use others but would love to have yours be a part of my ever growing ASL education. : )
Hi, just saw your video. Only one critique before I check out your website. One, you were signing very fast. I read the subtitles to keep up, but I would like it a little slower. Now off to your site.
@Puldoh0213 Thanks for the critique. My purpose for signing it at "conversational speed" is that I want viewers to see ASL in it's "native format." This way, by observing me signing naturally, viewers can quickly see that I am a fluent signer and not an ASL student pretending to teach. Hope you enjoy the website!
I don't really have an opinion about whether or not you should charge for your service. I do have an opinion about your "put downs" of others who you think may not have your "skills"; I don't think it's necessary!
I started to learn ASL many years ago to help my friends (who are deaf). At that time there were very few books or teachers available (no internet). Perhaps your training and skills exceed mine, but I have never charged anyone for my assistance and I have never had a complaint! jb
@JayBeeBass There is a HUGE difference between a "put down" and a word of caution.
Am I "belittling or humilitating" ASL students posing as teachers? Not hardly.
Have I, a Deaf person who is a member of the Deaf world, and also happens to be a trained, professional ASL teacher, REPEATEDLY seen first-hand the damage done by those who give the false impression that ASL is a "lesser language" and anyone can teach it? Quite so!
@BYUFanatic This explanation here is the word of caution I was looking for. I think your point is well made here and not so much before And, you may be a wonderful and gifted teacher....but spending a lot of money studying any language and even being certified does not mean that someone "will" be a good teacher!!! If it's looking for you...success will find you! jb
@Ashenfly Sounds like a plan to me. Check it out, then come back and tell everyone how it compares with any of the "freebie stuff" they'll find here on YouTube.
Cool video! but... I saw your website you want to people pay 5 dollars for learn american sign language?! Heck no you better change your mind... it is absolutely free for teach to others how to sign language!
@gloomybrica Considering what you get, $5 is an incredible price. You can learn random signs mixed in with a lot of misinformation from a STUDENT seeking their 15 minutes of fame, or you can learn a beautiful, unique, and special language from a certified, experienced TEACHER. If you decide to take the "freebie" route, then you'll never learn just how wonderful ASL really is. Don't believe me? Read through the comments on my videos. The testimony of others is proof enough.
@BYUFanatic I think its Rather Wrong that you charge To teach someone Sign language. Thats like Making someone Buy books Before you Teach them to Read.
@Ashenfly I've invested YEARS of my own personal life and THOUSANDS dollars of my own personal money in order to ensure I have the skills to be a qualified and certified ASL teacher and now you're telling me I should give it all away for free? If you google ASL and other langauges you'll see there are THOUSANDS of websites out there to teach you those languages and almost every single one of them charges you money. Now, compare their prices with mine. I am almost giving it away at my price.
If you don't want to pay a TINY amount of money for top-notch, quality college-level education from a highly qualified and experience teacher that other students spend THOUSANDS of dollars to get at local colleges, then you're welcome to go find the ASL students posing as teachers and learn random signs from them. I LOVE the language. ASL is very important to me. Which is why I have spent countless hours developing my website and don't need you telling me that what I am doing is wrong.
@gloomybrica Unfortunately for you, you lose the bet. There are HUNDREDS of people taking ASL lessons on my website with more people joining all the time. These are people looking for a teacher that is qualified and knows what he's doing. They're not interested in wasting their time watching videos of a bunch of random signs on YouTube from someone who has no idea how to teach ASL.
@gloomybrica, I don't understand what you are saying. Anything that has actual value, you pay for. Likewise, if it's free, it's generally crap. That goes for sign language lessons too. Personally I'd rather learn from professional who knows what he is doing, than from some random idiot with no verifiable skills or training.
i really want to learn asl but dont have the funding for schooling, so this is why i appreciate it when others who are kind take time out of their lives to do something like this.
@daveswife07 Glad you found my video helpful. My website is also a great place to take ASL lessons and I've made the price inexpensive specifically because I want everyone to be able to learn ASL without having to spend tons of money. *smile*
I am looking into becoming a teacher for the deaf and hard of hearing, but my school doesn't offer anything but nursing, cosmetology, and viticulture :-| They said they hadn't even heard of what I said I wanted to major in, so I'm looking for any and all resources that way when I transfer I'll be ready :-D Thank you for this!
@SolaceInEntropy Hi! There's actually a number of schools that have "Deaf education" or "Education of the Deaf" degrees. Many schools that offer this degree will often have it as part of a "Communications Disorders" dept rather than as a regular teaching degree. Unfortunately, some colleges don't require that you know how to sign (or even bother teaching you how to sign). So you may have to learn ASL separately. My website is one good place you can learn ASL. Best of luck!
@BYUFanatic I'm working towards getting into Barton :-) Because the school I go to now only has Spanish and Public Speaking in the lines of communication, I'll be depending on your website a lot, and I'm glad I'm getting my information from a teacher! Thank you so much ^_^
I'm very glad I found your video by accident, ASL is something that extremely interests me and when I get the chance, I am definitely purchasing a module :)
I love the introduction videos you put up, and I can see just how helpful this is going to be :)
ive been signing for 1 year now and im 12 years old but ive searched through vids and i look at a comment about your vids when i see youi look at you like a very helpful man thank and bless you mr nielson
a friend, BANERIKA, highly recommended I look at your site... and here I just stumbled upon it the same day she mentioned it! I am starting, again, going back to college at age 46 to learn to become an ASL interpreter. I am hearing, and have been away from ASL for 8 long years due to severe illness.
B4 I had studied at same college in now, as well as private, small-group classes, and with a tutor. Now, it's much harder, ten years later and 8 yrs isolated & out of it. TY FOR UR SITE! ..PEACE..
Hey, all! I am Jenny. I'd like to invite you to join ~~~deafmatching dot c om~~~ Here you can find thousands of sexy deaf singles, enjoy videos, photo gallery and more. Welcome to join us!!
glad I happened your youtube video. I'm anxious to see more. I've been signing about 5 years but I just can't read fingerspelling.... Your video is the first I've seen with a 'real' person fingerspelling and not just a 'hand' in the air. thanks alot!!!
Thank you Dennis. Glad you like it. I purposely created the videos this way specifically for the learner to observe how the hand is held in relation to the body and face. I see a lot of errors when students learn just the letters, but don't learn correct positioning. Good luck with the learning!
I love your videos. I'm from Italy and here we use another sign language but there are only few specificy and very expensive courses for it, so I'm trying to learn the Asl, for help deaf turist for free :)
Hi there! I've always wanted to see Italy. Maybe someday I'll bump into you over there and you can be my tour guide. *smile* You are always welcome to learn ASL from my website. You will find that my price is very affordable.
I LOVE YOU ALREADY!!! I'm so excited for more of your videos! I have been learning sign language for 7 years now. My teacher says I just need to get out into the Deaf community and I will do fine. Thanks again!
@quickchange Glad you like the videos! *smile* I enjoy making them. I definitely have more planned for others to enjoy. Good luck with your signing. I agree with your teacher - interacting with Deaf signers is one of the best ways to improve your skills!
LOL. Yep. My students actually have that ("for the benefit of the signing-impaired") on the back of their shirts as part of the design from last year's ASL shirts.
so yeah it would help if he actually taught each individual gesture first before going through it all quickly. I want to learn but I can't tell what each gesture means on its own.
This video isn't a "teaching" video. Rather it is an introduction to the videos that I do use to teach with. That's why I added captioning - for the benefit of the "signing impaired."
If you want to actually learn ASL, check out the videos I created specifically to teach ASL.
Anyone with an interest in learning ASL can take classes. Local college and community education programs often offer classes. I also teach ASL online (see my website).
i've checked out your website and can't register (not student at Westwood, etc). Does this mean I can't learn from you? I live in SW Florida.

Ajaxicle 1 year ago
@Ajaxicle Yay for you! Glad you mastered the alphabet! There are differences between ASL and Australian sign language, yes.
BYUFanatic 1 year ago
Thank you so much! I need to learn ASL because I will soon be deaf. I started learning form a good book but I acquired bad habits and need to see actual signing. Most lessons on youtube focus more on the people who do them rather than the content, are too short, poorly structured or too timidly signed. Or, funny!! they have nothing written and require you to HEAR. This set of lessons gives good explanations, is well paced, and has no sound . Reading exercises are great; hard but useful.
cocosgeta 1 year ago 2
@cocosgeta Hi, and welcome to the world of ASL! I'm glad you're learning to sign. *smile* A book, no matter how good it is, simply cannot replace a signing model. Videos are good, with live interaction being best. I'm glad you see why my videos are so different than all the others on YouTube as well - because I focus on using the language to teach the language and I put a lot of quality work into creating each video. Good luck with learning!

Hi, just saw your video. Only one critique before I check out your website. One, you were signing very fast. I read the subtitles to keep up, but I would like it a little slower. Now off to your site.
Puldoh0213 1 year ago
@Puldoh0213 Thanks for the critique. My purpose for signing it at "conversational speed" is that I want viewers to see ASL in it's "native format." This way, by observing me signing naturally, viewers can quickly see that I am a fluent signer and not an ASL student pretending to teach. Hope you enjoy the website!

I just love this.....
JayBeeBass 1 year ago
@JayBeeBass Thank you. :)
BYUFanatic 1 year ago
I don't really have an opinion about whether or not you should charge for your service. I do have an opinion about your "put downs" of others who you think may not have your "skills"; I don't think it's necessary!
I started to learn ASL many years ago to help my friends (who are deaf). At that time there were very few books or teachers available (no internet). Perhaps your training and skills exceed mine, but I have never charged anyone for my assistance and I have never had a complaint! jb
JayBeeBass 1 year ago
@JayBeeBass There is a HUGE difference between a "put down" and a word of caution.
Am I "belittling or humilitating" ASL students posing as teachers? Not hardly.
Have I, a Deaf person who is a member of the Deaf world, and also happens to be a trained, professional ASL teacher, REPEATEDLY seen first-hand the damage done by those who give the false impression that ASL is a "lesser language" and anyone can teach it? Quite so!
BYUFanatic 1 year ago
@BYUFanatic This explanation here is the word of caution I was looking for. I think your point is well made here and not so much before And, you may be a wonderful and gifted teacher....but spending a lot of money studying any language and even being certified does not mean that someone "will" be a good teacher!!! If it's looking for you...success will find you! jb
JayBeeBass 1 year ago
I have been looking high and low for instructions on ASL. Thanks! I'll check it out.

@Ashenfly Sounds like a plan to me. Check it out, then come back and tell everyone how it compares with any of the "freebie stuff" they'll find here on YouTube.
BYUFanatic 1 year ago
Cool video! but... I saw your website you want to people pay 5 dollars for learn american sign language?! Heck no you better change your mind... it is absolutely free for teach to others how to sign language!
gloomybrica 1 year ago
@gloomybrica Considering what you get, $5 is an incredible price. You can learn random signs mixed in with a lot of misinformation from a STUDENT seeking their 15 minutes of fame, or you can learn a beautiful, unique, and special language from a certified, experienced TEACHER. If you decide to take the "freebie" route, then you'll never learn just how wonderful ASL really is. Don't believe me? Read through the comments on my videos. The testimony of others is proof enough.
BYUFanatic 1 year ago
@BYUFanatic I think its Rather Wrong that you charge To teach someone Sign language. Thats like Making someone Buy books Before you Teach them to Read.
Ashenfly 1 year ago
@Ashenfly I've invested YEARS of my own personal life and THOUSANDS dollars of my own personal money in order to ensure I have the skills to be a qualified and certified ASL teacher and now you're telling me I should give it all away for free? If you google ASL and other langauges you'll see there are THOUSANDS of websites out there to teach you those languages and almost every single one of them charges you money. Now, compare their prices with mine. I am almost giving it away at my price.
BYUFanatic 1 year ago
If you don't want to pay a TINY amount of money for top-notch, quality college-level education from a highly qualified and experience teacher that other students spend THOUSANDS of dollars to get at local colleges, then you're welcome to go find the ASL students posing as teachers and learn random signs from them. I LOVE the language. ASL is very important to me. Which is why I have spent countless hours developing my website and don't need you telling me that what I am doing is wrong.
BYUFanatic 1 year ago
@Ashenfly, I'm curious, is it wrong to charge for instruction in French, Chinese, or Italian?
Banerika 1 year ago
@BYUFanatic Doesn't matter. I bet people don't buy that.
gloomybrica 1 year ago
@gloomybrica Unfortunately for you, you lose the bet. There are HUNDREDS of people taking ASL lessons on my website with more people joining all the time. These are people looking for a teacher that is qualified and knows what he's doing. They're not interested in wasting their time watching videos of a bunch of random signs on YouTube from someone who has no idea how to teach ASL.
BYUFanatic 1 year ago 15
Some schools actually have teachers that teach A.S.L. so it's nice when there's people that want to help.
Firetopaz17 1 year ago
@Firetopaz17 Yep. My school is one of them. (I'm a high school ASL teacher.)
BYUFanatic 1 year ago
@gloomybrica I bought that
TheOobster 1 year ago
@gloomybrica, I don't understand what you are saying. Anything that has actual value, you pay for. Likewise, if it's free, it's generally crap. That goes for sign language lessons too. Personally I'd rather learn from professional who knows what he is doing, than from some random idiot with no verifiable skills or training.
Banerika 1 year ago
i really want to learn asl but dont have the funding for schooling, so this is why i appreciate it when others who are kind take time out of their lives to do something like this.
daveswife07 1 year ago

I am looking into becoming a teacher for the deaf and hard of hearing, but my school doesn't offer anything but nursing, cosmetology, and viticulture :-| They said they hadn't even heard of what I said I wanted to major in, so I'm looking for any and all resources that way when I transfer I'll be ready :-D Thank you for this!
SolaceInEntropy 1 year ago
@SolaceInEntropy Hi! There's actually a number of schools that have "Deaf education" or "Education of the Deaf" degrees. Many schools that offer this degree will often have it as part of a "Communications Disorders" dept rather than as a regular teaching degree. Unfortunately, some colleges don't require that you know how to sign (or even bother teaching you how to sign). So you may have to learn ASL separately. My website is one good place you can learn ASL. Best of luck!
BYUFanatic 1 year ago
@BYUFanatic I'm working towards getting into Barton :-) Because the school I go to now only has Spanish and Public Speaking in the lines of communication, I'll be depending on your website a lot, and I'm glad I'm getting my information from a teacher! Thank you so much ^_^

a friend, BANERIKA, highly recommended I look at your site... and here I just stumbled upon it the same day she mentioned it! I am starting, again, going back to college at age 46 to learn to become an ASL interpreter. I am hearing, and have been away from ASL for 8 long years due to severe illness.

glad I happened your youtube video. I'm anxious to see more. I've been signing about 5 years but I just can't read fingerspelling.... Your video is the first I've seen with a 'real' person fingerspelling and not just a 'hand' in the air. thanks alot!!!
ldennis007 2 years ago
Thank you Dennis. Glad you like it. I purposely created the videos this way specifically for the learner to observe how the hand is held in relation to the body and face. I see a lot of errors when students learn just the letters, but don't learn correct positioning. Good luck with the learning!

This video isn't a "teaching" video. Rather it is an introduction to the videos that I do use to teach with. That's why I added captioning - for the benefit of the "signing impaired."
