I like how peoples' best arguments against this video have to do only with money and 'making a living'. I carry the opinion that the world would probably be a much better place without the current financial system. By the way... if disaster were to strike, marketers would be out of a job, engineers could still MAKE a living.
I have never seen an incompetent marketer move successfully into engineering. I have never known of a floundering Marketing Major who succeeded by switching majors to Engineering. On the other hand, I have seen plenty of of incompetent engineers/engineering majors, who moved into marketing with great success. If you can't run with the big dogs, stay on the porch...
i was doing engineering then changed to marketing, best decision of my life. Could being an engineer be any more boring ? worst degree to study in the world, i don't care if you create things. your bored, disagree with me? why are you making you tube videos.
@Engin696 An engineering degree, particularly in computer/electrical is one of the most robust undergrad degrees you can get, particularly if you go to a decent or good engineering school where you learn management and project development among other non-technical topics alongside the maths and sciences.
One of the most successful companies where I live doesn't have any marketers. In fact, they don't hire anyone but engineers. No sales, no marketing, not even machinists, because the engineers do that as well. So, with this companies success, one might ask, what do marketers really do?

I'm a Math & CS double-major, engineer for years, turned marketer. This guy clearly has no idea how a real business is run. Marketecture is a way to communicate to a customer why they should give a crap about the thing that you, engineer, has built, and specifically illustrates how it fits into their world. Without it people with money don't spend money on your technology and you don't get paid to smear an essential aspect of how any business is run.
Since you've turned to the darkside you can no longer claim a technical background. It's like walking into a brothel but telling everyone it's okay cause you went to church as a kid.

Showing true colors of an amateur engineer! Anyone with any decent experience behind their belt had a great laugh at your misdirected generalization. Too bad your living depends on what marketing people do.
Too bad you can't make a technical presentation without one of us sitting in the front row telling you what the product can and can't do. It's like a ventriloquist act: you get all the punchlines, but we do all the heavy lifting.
P.S. At least tech presentation I make business people (you know, those who write checks to pay for your tools, equipment... salary) can understand. Can't say that about many tech presentations I have seen delivered by techies enamored with technology for the sake of technology.
@apsinkus good use of the word "tech" there not marketing person plus this stuff is suppossed to be funny, dont take it too seriously its only youtube
@apsinkus Really don't know about the "pay for your tools and salary" argument for the value of business people. If business people are valuable, it's for a better reason than that they serve as engineers' surrogate mothers. "Business people write your checks, so respect them" is a laaaaame argument.
"Business people are identifying what products you should be inventing" is a slightly better one.
As an engineer in marketing I can tell you marketing is much harder than engineers realize. I've done both and I can tell you that. What surprises me is that engineers with 20 years experience in corporate environment still think marketing is advertising or putting content on the company website. Marketing defines what engineers should be building to make the company enough money to stay in business and keep the engineers employed.
Oh, we know you do so much more. Don't forget taking all the credit, benefiting from near slave-labor outputs from us, and getting promoted to higher-paying positions based on how well you can "deal" with us.
If you haven't notice, all us engineers (or engineers in the making) laugh at programs like ''business'' and ''marketing''. Thats just how it is... because we're superior!!! :)
Bitter, much? You know, there are companies that both respect and promote people in both roles; you just have to find a company whose primary IP is based in their software. This isn't always the case. A huge counterexample is IBM; they produce a ton of software, some of it actually pretty good (DB2), but don't treat their coders very well since they're predominantly a relationship and services company.
@wcg66 Ya dude, it's like being the cashier. Your just the guy to take the crap/praise and exchange the money. We actually do the work that people buy.
Sometimes marketers will spin, bend or twist the facts in order to get the prospect's attention. It's shameful and I'll admit it.
However, we might not be forced to spin, twist or bend the truth about a product so much if were better designed and better built by the engineers in the first place.
