The only reason Nine regenerated smiling was to calm rose, and since he di not have a companion with him Ten did not have to comfort any one nor did anyone comfort him. thus he was not wearing a smile during his regeneration, he had no need to.

David Tenant was a great doctor. He got me into the series, but now I'm watching some old vintage Doctor Who and I'm finding that I end up liking them all. Although, they're all different, they're somehow all "The Doctor"

People say that the show really did too much when Ten regenerated, and he should have gone smiling. I disagree, they didn't do too much much, Tennant was simply the most awesome Doctor and deserved that huge ''goodbye.'' Also, he didn't regenerate smiling because of all the horrors he had seen and the guilt that was consuming him.

@SpectreICollateral Agreed. Sad as I was to see Ten go, I think they'd worked it so that he had to. By the end of the fourth series, Ten had lost so much and was so hurt and guilty and broken that I don't think he could've gone on any longer. He needed the little "reboot" that regeneration gave him to be able to continue. Ten was such an emotional Doctor - which makes him my fave - and he deserved a really emotional send-off.

@SpectreICollateral I agree, and he wasn't the only one to leave with out a smile *SPOILERS* Look at the 5th. He was in a lose/lose situation, with everyone but himself and Perry already dead, and instead of saving himself he choose to save his companion, and on top of it, he was for sure that his regeneration was failing. It may not of had all the flash and bang, but it was still a very sad ending, and he certiantly wasn't smiling.

i agree that they didn't do too much, but i don't think he didn't go out smiling because of the horrors he had seen. I think it was because, despite those horrors, he wanted to stick around. The doctor's said it before - when he regenerates, he becomes a completely different person. New face, personality, all of it. He had made memories as the tenth, and him regenerating was equal to him having to start over again. He'd never be the same.

The Doctor is awesome...not just purely one of them...I mean, I understand that he's your favourite, but to have a favourite you must first have a great appreciation and knowledge of all of them...not saying that you don't or anything...but yeah...just felt like I should say this...because all the Doctors deserve a big goodbye...

@SpectreICollateral I think Ten's regen was treated the best out of all the Doctors. They weren't trying to be over the top, they were doing what they ought to have started doing ages ago, which is give every regeneration a proper, honoring, respectful, SAD goodbye. Because every single time a Doctor leaves, our hearts are broken; but up till Ten the show had always acted as though nothing big had changed. No big deal, you've only had to say goodbye to the guy who's been your hero for __ years.

@SpectreICollateral But with Ten (who is, in my opinion, by far the BEST Doctor) they managed to make it heartbreaking. They made him and his companions feel the heartwrenching goodbyes that we fans have been feeling every regen since 1963. Hopefully they'll do the same with Matt Smith when it's his time to leave us. Every Doctor has always deserved more of a goodbye than they got, except Ten. Ten was given the honor he deserved, and hearts across the world broke for it. RIP Ten. We miss you.
