when i was a kid, this song haunted me, i woke up & thought i dreamed it, many years later i realized it was not a dream & i mustve heard it somewhere. or maybe Laurie Anderson implanted the song in my brain? Maybe everything is a dream? & only when your doing a poo in the toilet, its real ?

You americans can put more into the lyrics, 'cause you understand them better than me. I simply love this tune.
As far as I speak English, I would say it's about loneliness, it's about being lost in a modern world. It's about getting useless informations all the time. It's about being told all the time. It's about being tired of all that.
the most wierd song i ever heard ...but it's a masterpiece in the same time . I recommend everyone the m.a.n.d.y - oh superman (version 2 ) the minimal remix .. is a very good one.
I remember this when I was a kid in the early eighties, I would get high to it without realising it just by sitting in a room with my parents who were smoking joints, ahh what memories!

I first heard this song when I was very little. I'm pretty sure it was on a mix tape that my mom made. It scared the shit out of me. It's a good song, though.
Why is there always one? Please define better, oh, and worse while you're at it. Or at least have the decency to acknowledge that you are expressing a personal preference. For example as in, "In my personal opinion you are an opinionated asshole."

Not to criticize your taste or anything, but I spent fifteen seconds listening to that song before I closed the window. Hehe, guess our tastes aren't that similar.
it's a good song, it really is.. but after 3minutes of this ohohohohohohohohohohohohohohohohohohoh.. it drives me insane:D... it was really good how boys noize mixed it on pukkelpop.. not too long.. but just enough that you still had the wauw-effect of this song..
I remember hearing this for the first time on WHFS radio in Washington, DC ... what was it, around 1980? I bought the EP with Walk The Dog on the B side. I still love this song.
It was most poignant when she performed this song in New York on 09/12/01. She hesitated to include it in her set that night but she did, and she deserves a lot of credit for doing so.
This song is like something really disturbing, it creeps me out everytime I hear it...I hate this song, but it's intriging so I keep listening to it...

Music as mind-fuck: gorgeous, haunting, enigmatic, sinister. Like a dream that might have been a nightmare. Check out her chilling live rendition a few days after Sept 11, 2001 at Town Hall in New York. "Here come the planes..."
The first time I listened to this song was about ten years ago... by that time I didn't understand english very well (it's not my native languaje), so I couldn't get what she was singing about, but her voice, the music and the minimalistic-misterious tone of the song scared the shit out of me...Now I can say it's one of my favorite songs ever.

This was a one-off surprise UK no.2 hit for Laurie Anderson in October 1981 but in saying that only amassed a total of 5 weeks in the top 40. She released her 'Big Science' album in 1982 but would not make a return to the UK charts until December 1997 where she has a few spoken words at the end of the 'Perfect Day' single for the BBC Children In Need that year. As part of that collaboration, it did one better, became a UK no. 1 hit (twice) and a million seller.

hey hendersonhere, I'm not religous but if I were, I'd pray for your sad life. As for this song - it is clearly a great artist at her finest! I can't say quite so much for "Homeland" which I just saw her perform last night in Seattle.
This song is just one piece of her 1981 album "Big Science", and for anyone, any woman who wants to understand what her real intent was when she recorded this, this is essential listening for you.
Laurie is a performance artist of the highest order, and she took the unconcsious flow of america and dissected it, using pop references and the general feeling disassociation in life in the late 70's early 80's aand this album is the result.
The song (and the album) is still relevant, even now.

Wow that is just a great song.
I was turned on by the M.A.N.D.Y. remix of it, but the original really is great on it's own. Seemingly minimal, experimental and ahead of its time.
There is just something special about this track.
