In my state TN, if you take the MSF course you need not take the written test, or the driving test. You only need to get your eyes checked & get your picture taken, After passing the MSF course. I also have been told by a few that the MSF course is not worth the insurance rate reduction given for the first year. That's all I was told it was good for, The first years premium ? Many people fail the written test, because of tricky questions on the test. I know that's the way I went, Then dive test

My uncle has car license he never ever rode a motorcycle before but it says on the back of license it has both car and motorcycle license. Now my question is, is it true if you pass the road test using your car do you get motorcycle license too?

@uSee218 road rules apply to both car and motorcycles, but operating the two are totally different. So, you have to take both road test separately. And as for the license displacing what vehicle you can drive or ride?...it should be in front of the license and not the back, so a peace officer can easily see. For instance, I have the 2 in 1 license for CA which said "CM1" on the top right corner.

What I did was that I go ahead and got me Yamaha Zuma125, which is a 125cc. engine size class. Went to the DMV and got myself a Motorcycle hand book, went through the entire book, set an appointment for the written test, which I passed on 7/7/2010, Got it insured and I rode for 10 months with just the permit. And on 5/2/2011, I got my M1 License. Here's the trick, the riding test will be "easy" , if you take the test with an automatic trans. scooter, that's why I mentioned the Yamaha. :)

thanks for the information. I was actually wanting to get a license for a motorcycle because it is cheaper than a car all the way around especially on gas. Even though my dad is a little skeptical about it because he had a pretty bad accent, I was always taught to learn from others mistakes ;)

I just took the written test 2 days ago , missed 5 the first time ( fail ) and 4 the second time ( pass) . One of the questions was about carrying loads . In the handbook it says position the load over the rear axle . HOWEVER on the test the answers were (A) position the load as far forward as possible (B) position the load to the frame (C) position the load to the back of the seat .. What would you have guessed was the correct answer ????? Let me tell you the answer is (A) WTF !!!!!

Try getting that in Finland.

First you gotta take classes on theory of driving, then u gotta take alot of driving lessons, add in a mountain of paperwork, + written test, bike handling test, and then the driving test. All of this costs from 700€ up to 1500€. And if you so happen to fail @ bike handling or driving test, theyre gonna order you to take more driving lessons, which cost ALOT.

My whole bike costs $200... which I took apart and rebuilt myself... so... uh, forget it. I don't have $200 to throw away to do stuff I've been doing for years. But good advice on the online course, and probably for most middle class people with no previous experience, just not for us poor people who have to ride and suffer thee cold and bugs in our teeth because we have no other choice, to save gas.

I have ridin for years, but went ahead and took the course. Glad i did. I just thought i knew everything until they showed me all kinds of things. And we had to wear boots with no shoe strings, because they can get caught on your clutch, or brake. Then you can't get your foot back down when stopping! Best thing i ever did was taking that course. And out of 15 to 17 people, only one failed. He was a 1st time rider, and was very large. He just had a time balancing the bike through the course.

...that is, if I ever pluck up the courage to use it, I usually take a detour to the previous or next one and avoid it altogether.

@sarahcrayner haha. well... u could do what i did. just tell them the goodthings about it. tell them, that insurance is cheaper, saves gas, (if they r all about going green) then tell them low EPS or whatever emissions. lol. tell them ull start out small too. i started out on a 250 ninja. it was fun. and it all worked for me. ive now got a 2006 honda CBR 600 RR

@sarahcrayner I got advice: get gear when you do. I guarantee you'll go down at some point. In any sport that takes balance you eventually fall. I hope it isn't bad when you do. & I'm sure you don't want to ruin that pretty skin. I've got a lot of scars all over my legs & hips.

As for convincing your parents (what you were really talking about). Start with the MSF course. They give you the motorcycle. In PA it was 100% free for me. Start with that. Take it with your dad or something. GL to you.

Hate to be a kill joy but in a few states, michigan I know for sure, you can't ride alone with just a permit. You have to have a licensed rider watching you. Whether they are riding their own bike along side/behind you or just following in a car it doesn't matter as long as they have you in sight and can get to you to give instruction.

Things are similar but different as the MSF is in the USA only, canada has it's own equivalent organization....check with your local motor vehicle licensing office for exact requirements as it's different from province to province

yeah i checked i live in toronto ontario they have pretty much the same thing but it cost like $300 but i`d say its worth it cause u get training and license after you pass the course.

I was looking on the website and they were saying that's one of the requirements, but I've been pricing insurances as well, and if you put that you currently do not have a license, they say they can not insure an un-licensed motorist....so I don't know what needs to happen.

+1 on taking the MSF course. You could nitpick it, but overall it saves many lives and makes riding more fun.

You ride on their bikes, so you don't have to beat up your bike learning to ride it.
