@lzrbld Unity is Canonical's own stab at a UI. For better or worse, I'm a KDE man myself. And yes, I meant DM; my brain could use an fsck.
Mint has a GNOME3/Cinnamon environment, basically Gnome3 with actual plugin functionality since it's quite rudamentary on its own. I thought you were running Arch for a while. I'm off topic though... Good job and I'll see about commenting on some of your later stuff if I have any requests or comments. Excellent job on these! You are helping me out.
How do you get it to read the sys1 files? it only wants to use ddl (or dll) and exe files. ive tried different things but it still wont work. :( how do you do it?
Step 2: Watch Season 2, Episode 3 to see how I install presets.
You're getting presets mixed up with synths. Synth1 is a VST, which is a .DLL or .EXE file. You downloaded the feeltune bank, which is a bunch of presets which you can load up inside of Synth1, which you load up from inside of VeSTige, which you load up from inside of LMMS.
When I load the VST into LMMS, the GUI appears, but instead of what your video says "Synth1 brastring" it says "1: Initial sound" and instead of "00 Factory Presets" it says "00:" In that way I cannot access any of the sounds included in the VST.
Also, the VST "cannot be loaded" at times. Please respond! These errors are preventing me from going on.
What platform you're on shouldn't matter. Synth1 won't have any soundbanks unless you install them. I don't know why LMMS would be failing to load Synth1. Perhaps you should try the forums there if you're having problems?
@lzrbld Okay, like i'll try to extract it to the Synth1 folder. And then this WinRAR diagnostic message pops up saying: The archive is either unkown format or damaged.
It's a zip file. I don't know about WinRAR, since I use Ubuntu which uses 7z to handle all modern archive formats, but winrar sounds like it's for rar archives.
@lzrbld hey man, excellent videos, only problem i got is i cant seem to select the synth etc, ive downloaded your links and i know where there are, under my music in folder called samples, i click, and they dont appear when tryin import them, please help. many thanks
I'd be happy to help, but I need more clear data in order to analyze your situation. Are you trying to use Synth1 or my sample collection? Samples and synth's are different, and require different treatment. If you are trying to use both, I can give step by step for setting them up individually.
I really need help...i watched your S2E1 video where you showed how to put the soundbanks in but i dont have patches so can you please help me? i would appreciated it a lot
You must download some soundbanks first. E.G, I use the feeltune soundbank in this video. Just use the link in the description to download the zip file, extract it, and then load it in synth1 the way I showed.
@lzrbld :) thanks, but I couldn't figure out how to extract the folders, or whatever the video said to do, so I just clicked "opt in" and did that, so now its working :D
When I downloaded Synth1...it went into my "downloads" folder...i can open it by clicking on "My home- Downloads, Synth 1 folder and then finding the right icon...how do I make Synth1 show up on my "Instrument Plugin" list?
"Synth1" doesn't show up in the instrument plugin list. You have to use "VeSTige," and then load Synth1 from there. Like I do in the video. Or see season 1 episode 1 for a more detailed explanation.
@lzrbld I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 and downloaded Synth1, then went into LMMS and loaded Vestige - the problem I'm having is that Vestige is looking for a DLL or EXE, which there are none in the downloaded folder. So... I guess what I'm asking is, how do I load Synth1 thru Vestige on Linux? Or am I missing something here?
@lzrbld Hi, thanks for the reply! I used the link you provided, but I see no .dll or .exe file in the archive, there is however, 128 patches/presets, a pdf, an image file, and a readme.txt. Am I supposed to have other files/program that these plugins work with? Is the .dll from another package/program?
@lzrbld Ah ha! Alrighty then, downloaded Synth1, wine configured automagically (which surprised me -- go Ubuntu!) and off I go! Thanks a ton for the info, much appreciated! Btw, if I haven't mentioned it, great vids! ;)
I'm going to answer my own question about loading Synth1 into Vestige for LMMS on Linux (correct me if I'm wrong.) The deal is VST support requires the use of Wine to initiate the plug-ins, which explains why Vestige was looking for dll and exe files (though you may have mentioned that in your earlier videos, and I happen to miss that, idk.) So... off to Ubuntu software center to fetch a copy of wine and trying my luck at getting this to work.
Excellent videos. I'm pretty new to LMMS and dubstep is definitely something I would like to play around with. I've seen several tutorials on both dubstep in general and LMMS functions, and none of them are as impressive while still being very easy to follow. Also, I like that you don't go into specifics so that others can't perfectly emulate what you're doing; I hope that is something that does not change in other videos. We definitely need to learn for ourselves. Great work and thank you!
Thank you. I'm really glad that people are noticing my effort to encourage tinkering and self-learning. It's a main focus of the show that characterizes it. It would have to be a different show before I change that. ;)
when ever i boot up synth-1 lmms freezes and slowes down when i force quit lmms it opens up synth-1 and i cant get any other wobble thats good besides the triple ocsilator but it dosent sound good please help!!!
When I have it set to lowest quality and record the audio separately, trying to re-sync afterward, yes it does. Otherwise, this particular screen-recorder is awesome.
Check episode 11, I explain it there. For the moment, the only way to get VST automation is to build from source, but that feature is SUPPOSED to show up in the next version of LMMS which is SUPPOSED to get released pretty soon.
it dosent let me choose sucker bass or the feel tune and every time i try to load it it says i need to contact someone because the vst isnt working properly then it says program not responding and i have to shut it down
Hey, also one more thing if i might...Could you please do a tutorial on Autotune like Skrillex does? Yes i know i'm a Dubstep poser haha, but i cant seem to autotune like him, im trying to use Gsnap but it just doesn't work how i want it, maybe you could figure it out, cause you're god haha
I see. When I used google translate(which is really spiffy) on it, the translation is that the page is "under construction" and "currently unavailable." Then it recommends to "try again later." Just check back in 24 hour intervals I guess.
Hey, You could also use Zynsynth could you not? It seems to have similar sounds. I find using VST's problematic, always freeze LMMS or something Great tutorial though. Much thanks!
Zasf is a VST plugin in lmms. Just one you can't automate. I have been wanting to learn how to better use it though, I don't think I've done it justice with my music.
@lzrbld Ah, Zsaf runs better than VST's for me though, and I don't want to do what you did with your VST thing cause i feel like I'll mess it up. I'm just running the standard version so i cant access VST plug-ins or automate them. There is just so much you can do with Zsaf if you really go in-depth into editing the instruments.
@lzrbld Dude go into the advanced editing on the synth under advanced and OMG so much you can do, its ridiculous man...Idk though VST's just don't work for me like they should, freeze and other problems...
Yea, already use advanced mode. Again, just to nitpick one last, solitary, tiny, small, straw, Zasfx IS a VST in LMMS. So at least that VST is working properly for you. You should also check out the newest versions of LMMS, VST support is way better and such. Thx for getting me back into zasfx, even if it took a bit of prodding.
@lzrbld Haha yeah i should im running 0.4.10 right now they have X.12 out i think but the source isn't available for Linux i don't think. Might be better for VST's hey thank you for replying! and Thanks for these tutorials they really helped me learn how to do things and learn more about LMMS!

Not sure, but I think it might have been Unity. Now I use Linux Mint, and I don't know what desktop manager that's built on.
BTW, you're thinking of a desktop manager, not theme.

@missmissy369
What's a .sys1 file? You may be thinking of a .sy1 file, which is a preset file for Synth1. VeSTige only loads Windows VST's, like .DLL's or .EXE's.
lzrbld 1 week ago
@lzrbld well how do i get it to work? because thats how the package came... was .sy1
