  • This is just fantastic, Taj is way cool from back in the days!

  • I find it interesting that Eric Clapton used that same guitar lick on Crossroads.

  • Look! Weird Al Yankovich on bass,..no, wait, It,s John Holmes before he entered the adult business

  • cool as a fan.

  • Taj was one cool cat.

  • @JJKaeshagen Taj is a cool cat, not was. He is the greatest. Love this man.

  • This is the great blues-oriented musicmaster in his early years. Wonderful clip!

  • goooooood!!!!!

  • The comment by Duane Allman about Jesse Davis is from Hittin the note issue#26. It was a old1970 interview Duane did for Crawdaddy magazine.

  • Jesse Davis!!! It's no wonder why Duane Allman stated that his favorite guitar player was Jesse Davis. He said when he plays" it's like someone opened the windows and let in the fresh air." True words indeed.

  • @eldescarga07 Where did you hear that? Duane and Jesse are my favorite guitar players, so this information just fills me with so much joy.

  • the front man on vocals reminds me a lot of mick jagger.

  • @Fruscianteistheman

Taj Mahal is 1000x cooler than Mick Jagger.

  • legend and a maestro ....Jesse Ed.....

  • found out today my dad's x-girlfrind died of liver failure. she drank her self to death. she was cool as fuck too when she was sober for a little bit. This song and her death tell me change ain't nothin to fear, it's stagnation you gotta run from.

    peace

  • HELL YEA !!! GO JESSE ED ROCK THAT SHIT OUT!!!!RIP

  • JESSE ROCKS!

  • Jesse ed Davis....

  • Taj Mahal, would you marry me ?

  • @AnitaNellcote

    If he won't, I will.

  • Chuck balckwell on drums

  • at 1:27 Taj sounded like Howling wolf, and he reminds me of wilson pickett with the powerful vocals. What a great band. These guys rock and though I have known about them for years I am just starting to really apprecitate them now. Thank you Youtube and Sirlongpass.

  • Grooooo........vey

  • Very Hubert Sumlin a like!

  • aw, hell yeah.

  • I went to school with Taj, used to hang out and watch him play in the music room at the student union. He also had a rock band that played for dances. This is how he looked at that time. GREAT!!

  • cool.

    I envy you.

I only went to school with a girl who was famous for yodeling in France.

  • Yeah, I do think I won that round!! She was famous for yodeling in France? Didn't know that was a favored pastime there LOL.

  • I did not know it either but she had a few big records.. LOL... Big?!?! yeah right..

She was The Yodeling Girl from Texas..

    We still laugh about it..

  • I love this!!!!

    10/10! great job.

  • what show is this from?

    Jesse Ed Davis.

    What a shame.

  • It looks like that "Playboy After Dark" show that used to come on in the sixties & seventies. The brother in the chic suit with the Afro gave it away.

  • my fav taj mahal song! love it

  • WOW,What a Dynamic singer,GREAT Voice,.500 Star Performance.

  • Classic Cool Man, classic cool.

  • Ah man, it's the shit fo' sho'.

  • I heard a delta blues version (the original version?) of this song, but didn't catch who it was. Any afficianados out there who know?

  • This is basically based on Howlin Wolf's Killing Floor.

  • @reissue

come on man, dig your roots, that's ol' Sleepy John Estes classic, on Decca, vintage 1938. At that time Chester Burnett was not a baby anymore, but not yet killing floors. With Jesse Ed Davis, what a great band behind Taj Mahal, and what a singer !

  • @gumbo66700 I was referring to Jesse's lines, the sliding 6th etc. should have been more specific. But yeah the lyrics are obviously SJE's, with a few variations. At any rate I don't care how many times that riff is recycled, I love the way it bounces along. A real booty shaker. Good to see so many blues fans here :).

  • @reissue True....but even that probably came from someone else.

  • This particular song is originally written by

    Sleepy John Estes

  • what are any of them doin now!!! they sing about change.. Lets get these mother effers together and play some tunes.... some body tell them....!!!...

  • Can't get enough of you Jesse, me again.

  • Anybody know where this video comes from. There's another here at same venue called E Z Rider... Would kill to get DVD of this.....

  • Jesse Ed Davis is so bloody cool on the tele...he is possibly better than Steve Cropper?

I believe he played on Conway Twitty albums..anybody know which ones?

  • For what he did nobody was better than Steve Cropper. Jesse Ed was bad ass as well but for Memphis style soul backup, Cropper is the king. Jesse Ed was top notch but in a bit of a different style. Would have been cool to see the two of them work together on something. Sidemen never get brought up. They deserve way more credit than they get.

  • Imagine that...Steve Cropper and Jesse ed together...who else would you nominate for that 'underground' super group?

Just using the word underground there to mean , not widely known to the general public.

I will start the ball rolling with Elvis Costello on vocals...

  • Love that "Killing Floor" riff! Go, Jesse.

  • If Jesse Ed had lived, how great would he be now?

  • me again, good great god this kicks ass...

  • im going to be seeing taj mahal in 5 days along with george thorogood, lol

  • The Great Plains Boogie Band, Jessie usualy sounded like three guys playing three different parts, but when you watched his hands it just like he was playing a simple rhythm... what a player! Yeah Taj was swingin' and Chuck Blackwell was in the driver's seat! There will never be another outfit like that one, boy!

  • I saw Taj Mahal at a festival right about this time. My friends and I watched Jesse Ed Davis in absolute stupefaction. What I remember most clearly is that he had some of the fastest hands I've ever seen, yet the rest of his body was absolutely still. No jumping around, no facial gestures, no kneed drops . . . just brilliant guitar work.

  • Man,I would've loved to have seen Taj and Jesse when you did. Jesse's fast hands!Remarkable.

  • Just to say once again : jesse Ed Davis was the man. Was. Alas. RIP Jesse.

  • the great one!

  • I'll say it again, Jesse Ed Davis is the man.
