To me, Jojo Mayer is the most impressive drummer since Buddy Rich. Lang and Weckl are nothing like this guy. His bass drum technique alone is unbelievable. What a monster!

He is just reinstating what has been lost over the years in drumming. Drumming is taking a new rebirth. Drumming has gone to hell with all this thrash metal and has taken music to new lows. Its Jojo, Neil, Buddy and all great drummers that have keep the art of true drummer. Wow! Thank them! Let go of all the thrash metal.

@AJuarez764 I can say that as someone who has fallen into that pit, and then been raised out of it, all music has its perks. Yes, metal music has its respect because of the amount of endurance and precise timing it takes to do it. But music is creative, not rigid, and the classic music from the past is just that. Jazz technique: if you got it, you can pretty much do anything.

@13TeK11 It's not a try, per-se. He breaks into the same routine he did back in 1998, but he calls it a try because he doesn't do much of the tricks anymore.

The 1998 Modern Drummer Festival video has him doing stick tricks about the same as here. Truthfully, this probably comes second nature for him now after so many years of practice.

There are other drummers that have similar showmanship ability to Jojo in case you are interested...Thomas Lang, Wim DeVries of the Drumbassadors (maybe the best I've ever seen), Virgil Donati, Marco Minnemann, Jotan Afanador, Johnny Rabb, and of course Buddy Rich, the innovator of stick tricks!

no it wasnt even a sonor kit. he used an early 80's gretsch kit in perth, western australia last week. it was the house kit of the club he played at with the janek gwizdala project. it was cool because ive played that kit a few times and its nice to see someone truly amazing thump them too.

i saw him live twice in a week! brought my "fierce ride" along to one of the gigs so he could autograph it, and when he had a look at it i asked him if he thought the cymbal was any good because it sounds different to the ones he uses on most youtube clips. so he takes my cymbal on stage and and starts playing again, testing it out against his ride! mine was a lot darker then his.... it was cool though, 20 minutes after the gig and he starts playing again. everyone in the room stopped.... lol

Effortless perfection. He is really playing an astounding piece of music on the whole kit. See Tony Royster ve. Thomas Pridogen on YT. Thoma incredible feel with own language and variety within a few strokes. Tony athleticism and schooled musician; plays all over the kit. Each makes the other better.
