That was massive, thank you for the great footage and sound, my old man played snare drum for the Royal Marines Band Portsmouth, he has passed now but I still enjoy listening to this and the memories it evokes.
Love this tune, known in scots gaelic as 'Chi mi na mor-bheanna or in english as the 'Mist covered Mountains' also referred to as 'The mist covered mountains of home'
Soon, all these extraordinary men will be gone for ever. Every year the list grows shorter. Some day a young Arnhem child will ask its father who the man in bronze is. And its father will try to explain as best as he can but he only knows his father's father's stories. As long as he teaches his child that fighting and sacrificing for freedom and justice is a worthy cause, he will have told the story right.
2nd comment on this video, but have been impressed every time I watch it. Take notice of the guy at 3:53 throwing a hand salute to the band on passing. Wish we had more people like that coming up through the ranks these days.. Great video...
I had an uncle who dropped at Op MG. He was about 20 or 21 and told me he only needed to shave every other day but he still did 'the job'. He lost a lot of good mates during the battle.
I love the sound of pipes and drums - very evocative. I admit to a wee tearing of my eyes! Exceptional video, thank you.
Great video, and It's worthy of mentioning that the camera man should be applauded for running along with the Pipers to keep the sound even. Nice Job!!!
wasnt organised very well. After this immense march everyone had to stand for bloody ages at the ceremony, no toilets or breaks and people collapsing during the service. just bloody stupid.
Wij waren erbij, zeer indrukwekkend, de rillingen gingen over de rug en de gedachte gingen terug naar sept '44 en de offers die de airbornes daar gebracht hebben voor de vrijheid van Nederland.
Thanks Skyejenx - It was a most moving ceremony. i was down at the lower level and the sound of the approaching pipes and sonorous bass drum was incredibly emotive and solemn - well done to all involved.
As a pipe band sidedrummer myself, I can tell you that the two tunes being played here are: "My Home" and "The Mist Covered Mountains". I have played these many times in various pipe bands at funerals and remembrance parades.
It was a brillant day in Arnhem even our band had a police escort running throught traffic, red lights and we made it in time thanks for the police and for thoose who likes us very musch. :)

they are playing mist on the moutains, they are playing rather fast it should be slightly slower.
but worthy of respect to the dead that fought over that bridge.

@kingbleah I think the name of this musical piece is "My Home".
Indeed respects and gratitude to the brave men who fought there and everywhere.

Heard this same set of tunes at the Queen Mother's funeral. Is it traditional to pair "My Home" with "Flowers of the Forest"?

The original 1944 bridge was bombed and demolished by American bombers a few weeks after the battle
What you are looking at is the new bridge built after the war ( which looks virtualy identical )
