I'm not a McCain fan, but what I think he meant was that he did not appreciate freedom intil he was deprived of it, consistent to the "law of supply and demand". In fairness, his statement should not be taken in a wrong context the same way that Michelle Obama's remark is being twisted around. The mere fact the McCain risked his life meant that he somewhat loved America.
Of course, having been a hero does not necessarily make him a better president.

The 2 are different. First, love and pride are different. Second, Michelle's issue with pride is centered around her husband being elected by the country she wasn't proud of. McCain's issue with love has to do with facing the possibility that you'll never ever see your country again and realizing that love.
Michelle's issue is dealing with self, McCain's issue is dealing with something outside of self.
