its not a "thing" but a modular eurorack of various eurorack modules that you buy separately, its pretty much a synth that you patch together yourself.....you can find where to buy stuff like this from analogue haven
it's so much better seeing someone active up on stage then just seeing a dj set of this- there equipment looks cool. that's what rates them as a fantastic live act.
Not very far from a DJ set- just a bunch of hardware effects- Ableton outputting on LOTS of seperate channels, ie. they've got all the samples/loops for that song. Twiddle the knob on the effects for the bassline, twiddle the knob on the effects for the drums, etc. The synth rack is the interesting part- but it looks like they dont stray too far from the selected progs, couple filters and delay.
Stand over it nodding and looking like youre doing something. Rinse repeat.
the 'rackmount feed patches' is actually a modular analogue synthesizer which creates most of the bleeps and lead lines
I think it's made mostly of Doepfer modules
the Macbook is running Ableton which holds samples, percussion and MIDI clock info although they never touch it, only trigger it with a Korg keyboard controller
the Mackie mixer just controls levels and EQ so they can bring things in and out on the fly
that sends ONE stereo signal out to the sound desk at the venue
I think the modular mostly consists of Analogue Systems modules, with a few Doepfer modules thrown in for good measure.
In "its the beat" that squeeky single note that bounces along throughout is the Korg ms-20, which is well known for its over driving filter (which mr. ozio put to good use in analog worms)
They also use a lot of external FX, like at the start 0:25 , the pitch change effect is a Electro Harmonix Memory Man.
yup, you can see a few non doepfer in there, cant really picture what though.
i love there live setup, its pretty much as close as you can get to live / improvised electronic dance music these days. The thing is with this, unlike alot of other peoples rigs, theres is very well set out.
Drum machine
MS20
Ableton + controller.
Drumtrax
pedals (you can go nuts here)
mixer (and with that comes compressors + reverb). its a simpler version of what everyone is using in software.
Yeah imagine walking down the road with one of those bad boys on your shoulder, everyone would think your so cool and hopefully give you a hand carrying it.... :P
what i especially love about them, don't get me wrong i love justice, ed bangers institubes, etc. but simian mobile disco uses so much improv, that just makes them so much better, they are unpredictable
theyre all pretending like their actually doing something

tbone I'm so glad you are here. you sound like such a fun person to be around.
The only appropriate way to react to people having fun is to nitpick the way in which they are doing so.
