If it were me I'd ask if all this jail BS is behind him and if he is going to keep his nose clean from now on. Because if your going to hire him back, you need to be able to count on him to be there. Didn't he go to jail for a no contact violation? A year and a half is a pretty harsh sentence for that if that's what it was. Charlie didn't seem like the kind of guy to get in trouble and I was surprised when he did. But he seemed like a good worker, kinda quiet, sure, hire him.

I don't know what else to say really. As long as Charlie's attitude hasn't changed to the work, then I don't see why he wouldn't be an asset to your business.

Yeah Pete I think you should let him come back if he wants to. He seems like a pretty decent guy and a hard worker. I don't know anything about his situation but you do. i think if Charlie was somebody that couldn't be trusted you would never have hired him in the first place. I am glad to hear he is getting out and hope like hell he has learned something from his experience. We all gotta learn man that's what it's about. Didn't he go to jail for a no contact violation? A year and a half is a pretty harsh sentence for that if that's what it was. Charlie didn't seem like the kind of guy to get in trouble and I was surprised when he did. But he seemed like a good worker, kinda quiet, sure, hire him.

First I would ask Charlie why he or his wife did not contact Pete to let him know that he's in the "graybar motel", unable to come to work.
Once someone leaves you hanging like that, it's hard to trust them again.

They might have picked him up on jay walking charges just because the cops that day were bored. Give him another shot but tell him this is his last chance to redeem himself.

Pete, my uncle ran a home improvement business for 25 years, He never had and still doesn't have anything because all the people he hired were getting thrown in jail, stealing his tools..and so on, Not saying Charlie is stealing anything, but people wouldn't show up to a big job and he got screwed over. Hopefully someone comes along thats stayed clean and really have an interest. Hire that guy, he deserves something for his staying on the straight.

If you really liked his work and trust him, give him one more chance, but if he has a drug/alcohol problem, I'd give zero tolerance, and keep a tight leash on him. Spell everything out right from the start, so that even an overnight in the can will end his employ with you.
When you find someone willing to learn, and willing to work, you gotta take a second chance or last chance, if he is an asset to your business
