  • I thought Larry uses Paiste, not Zildjian????

  • Raunchy Ripper Rhythm.

  • so much for larry's paiste endorsement, he records with zildjians ha

  • The drums in "Bad" have always amazed me.

  • it's almost criminal how underrated this guy is

  • Zildjian? He's woken up

He 'may' be able to play simple beats to a click, but that doesn't mean he sounds good doing it

  • the man knows a beat. great.

  • One of the firts attempts of Get on your boots! : )

  • who care if its simple? all music doesn't have to be like super speedy and difficult. sometimes simple and solid is a lot better and in U2's case it defiantly is. it's their type of music. don't criticize

  • He is so solid!

  • Wow, Get On Your Boots was created in 2008 !

  • thought larry was a Paiste man. nice Z's anyway.

  • its good to know that larrys kit sounds as shitty as everyone elses live before tinkering...not a knock i love u2 but sometimes you feel so below par after hearing u2 live mixes,,,i love u2's rythmn section...

  • Industrial drumming

  • Get On Your Boots.

  • mate, how did you get this video?

  • A solid drummer. Also what the heck is the end all about?

  • shit drummer, even after all these years... kept for his looks, useless northside skanger

  • @desgarrett well, this shit drummer founded one of the best bands of the world. asshole.

  • @desgarrett ur the dumbest idiot on here to think that Larry sucks. You surprise us all...even after all these years... And we thought you've grown up! Go have a listen to Charlie Watts and then try to educate yourself learning about underrated drummers. asshole.

  • WHEN DID HE SWITCH FROM PAISTE TO ZILDJIAN?

  • people have no idea how good this guy is and how much he contributes to the band.

he's one of the most underrated drummers ever.

great job larry, and thanks zookrist!

  • what hes playing is very basic mind

  • Nice and solid! That is his trademark!

  • What a legend, i don't no many other drummers who are as solid as him, he never flinches on the kit, great guy too.

  • holy crap, this video is not synched. audio/ video, speaking.

  • wow..soo easy

  • You can't knock Larry,He's doing what's right for the music,And the only thing that is easy is something that someone else is doing.Larry is not the greatest drummer on earth,But then again,He's far from being the worst.

  • its a musical journey

  • Just look at him drum at streets have no name and you'll see he's a great drummer

  • this is so cool. i love watching larry drum!

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah, U2 has always had a very underrated rhythm section.

  • u2 need to retire. no line on the horizon was a fucking turd.

  • @mchutjian Well then how come you're not touring and raking in 140 million dollars?

  • Check out my studio sneak preview!:)

  • It's good...

  • It doesn't have to be hard to play to make it a great drummer

  • yes he is very solid and keeps great time; he also has a unique style, like peart; you know who the drummer is pretty much form the first several bars, whether the other musicians are playing or not; imo, peart, portnoy, bozzio, all have amazing ability to pull a song and the other instruments together as well as mullen, perhaps better, esp peart; being a drummer myself, neil's style, esp in the last 5 to 10 yrs, has becomg alot more musical and difficult to reproduce; but again, just my opinion

  • audio & video are out of sync

  • hes a good less is more type drummer, very solid

  • The audio and video don't match up all that well.

We all know Larry can lay a groove down and bewilder us all. But some of Rock's greatest songs have simple back beats to them. It's whatever the music generates and the feel a drummer gets off the initial groove this should be the primary focus.

  • get on ur boots...yeah...

  • as my best friend, who's a drummer once said, this guy a is a living metronome

  • @mllinas16 my drummer friend commented on his timing as well... I'm not a drummer so I can't really tell one drummer's timing from another (unless it's really bad of course)

  • @mllinas16 don't all drummer have to be on beat to sound relatively good?

  • Larry Mullen Jr. is the greatest rock drummer today.

I know, Neal Peart, Thomas Pridgen, Lars Ulrich, Mike Portnoy, even Chad Smith (who I love). But do they really have the ability to pull all the instruments together for the song to be in one piece as Larry Mullen does? Besides, he's composed the most original beats in rock n' roll.

    Peace, FP

  • @pechilandia here here mate i agree with you ! larry mullen,s the best drummer in rock music today ! he,s the battery of u2 and can play to so many different tempo,s and has so much power and energy when he takes to the stage every night yet never gets the headlines ! i would advise anyone who listens to u2,s music to concentrate on larry,s drumming to appreciate his class drumming ! luv u larry

  • listen to elvis presley in america, and promenade, the latter played with brushes, ala pete de freitas only better, all this crap on larry is shite and unfounded by morons,, its like sayin a great author is crap because he wrote the words 'and' or 'the'. they are the building blocks and knowing when and where to use them is a gift. NOTE you arseholes .

  • @EVERTONIC well said mate your,e right what you say ! u2 wouldnt be half the band without larry ! yes people rightly say egdes sound makes u2 but larry is the backbone of the band and ive seen live so many times that i can say larry,s a genius ! dont forget but for him way back in 1975 there would not have formed ! email back if you want mate

  • It all looks easy until you have to sit there with click tracks and sequencing. Larry plays with clicks and his timing is dead on perfect. Nobody on this board can even come close to his ability. You people crack me up.

Most drummers out there cant even play without speeding up a song.

  • @vertigo2112 ok hes good at timing but plz dont overrate him :D i can play this with click i swear....i dont wonna say like the most drummers (that can most times not even play) im better then him i never said that i only wonna say this is not sooo extremly hard...

  • @vertigo2112 There was a story posted that their producer said that Larry picked up a flaw in timing that their computers didn't even hear..

  • @vertigo2112 Larry Mullen Jr is the greatest rock drummer of all time.

  • He could be recording one drum track layer. It's called playing for the song. Larry is not trying to be Neil Peart.

  • o and all u other drummers out there just think about ur favorite drummer and imagine if u saw them do a simple beat like that.....now would u just go off and say they suck? no

  • yup exactly what rojb33 said who cares if its a simple beat i mean seriously obviously none of the haters have heard larry when he really is going crazy on the drums and he's a famous drummer so obviously.....he knows how to play the drums

  • you haters are pretty funny...why the fuck does it matter if the beat is simple? And why are you judging him as a drummer based on a simple beat, to a song that was not even near completion at this point in the recording process? You sound like fucking morons, simply put....you'll find that even the most technical drummers play simple drum beats...just like some of the most technical guitar players play simple riffs...it's not a bad thing...it's all about serving the song.

  • ur right, a simple song...whats the matter with that...if u didnt notice ...this song was Get On Your Boots...for me...the 4th best song of u2 in the last 10 years...(since ATYCLB)

    larry...is simple...but kick asses...!!...

its not i f he plays fast...he knows music...

you bastards only want to hear fast beats...but this guy know what is music...real music...not stupid things as this motherfucker...lars ulrich...he is rich because of metallica...no because of he...

    Metallica < U2

  • U2 wrote "Miami"

  • Larry is the best drummer for U2. Stewart Copeland is the best drummer for the Police. Ringo is the best drummer for the Beatles. David Robinson is the best drummer for the Cars. Charlie Watts is the best drummer for the Rolling Stones etc....

Just because a drum beat is simple or "boring" doesn't mean that the song is not worth listening to. Some of the greatest songs are simple ones with so called simple drum beats. The more simple the song, the more spot on the drumming must be.

  • you people judging Larry's chops based on this video suck. recording is not glamorous no matter who you are. he's a fully decent drummer and doesn't pretend to be anything more. U2 haters are hilarious. Larry Mullen is a far better drummer than Ringo Star, but I bet you'd never say a bad word about a Beatle!

  • it's Get On Your Boots, what do you expect? that the whole song turns into 25 different speeds and beats?

  • haha yeah and not lose the beat on these easy ones maybe?

  • how has the police outsold any U2 tour when U2 broke the record this year for most tickets ever sold on a tour, EVER. Croke Park, three dates, 240,000 people sold out in 30 minutes !

  • Actually, they weren't sold out in 30 minutes - I scored one ticket to Dub1 and 1 ticket to Dub2 almost hour after they went on sale.

But who cares? Those were two nights I'll never forget!

  • @ZooKristaps It's not about concert sales. Look at the total meaningless mediocrity of Madonna/Elton John/ Bon Jovi to name but three.

  • @paddy9i99 Lol, Elton John and Bon Jovi mediocre? No. How about you take your faggot ass to a place where people who lack an education are accepted?

  • Yeah Stu Copeland is nasty, this dude is a waste.

  • holy cow !..secrets revealed !! larry using zildjian cymbals in the studio ?? !!! he's been a paiste endorser since '83..if this ever got out !!..watch out !! lol !!

  • That got my attention too!!! But I don't think he's dropped Paiste completely for Zildjian. I don't own their newest CD, but my brother said that both Paiste and Zildjian were listed in the liner notes. I think he's still playing Paiste's live. So, I don't think that there's any deception going on. But either way, the people at Paiste are probably not too happy that Larry's dabbling with other cymbal brands!!!

  • @blica1 hahaha

  • A great musical drummer!

  • Actully U2's Vertigo tour grossed 383 Million dollars, which is second all time (to the rolling stones, not the police) The point is they have had 10 munber one albums (3rd all-time), 22 grammys (most all-time for a band). they had a #1 album in 1987 and in 2009, a 22 year span. and lastly, why are you watching Larry drum if you don't like it?

  • I don't have rockband or a basement, name one band aside from the beatles who have more worldwide sucess than U2, and the fact that you calleed me "bozo" kind of speaks for itself.

  • You honestly think after being the most sucessful band in the would for 30 years, they can only play simle rhytms and melodies. And being an amazing band while remaining simple is way more difficult than just playing really fast and complex.

  • Each member of U2 is much better than what you hear on the album because they feel very strongly that the whole should be greater than the sum of the parts. they rely on musicianship rather than pure skill.

  • U2 blows.

  • Little detail:Stewart Copeland doesn't know at all how to play in a constant tempo.Take a look just at the intro of Syncronicity on their last dvd:listen to the bass drum... :)

  • GET ON YOUR BOOTS

  • This is not filmed to display what a great drummer Larry Mullen is. This is filmed as a video diary, just to show an example of what's going on in the studio. Clearly this part is simple for anyone who knows how to drum and clearly he knows how to play way more complicated stuff. He is highly esteemed by many, and from what I've heard he's utter perfection when it comes to timing, which not every drummer is, actually/unfortunately.

  • I must agree that with a fair few on it being rather simple, but its not what you play but how you play it that counts, not juts on drums but on any thing... that said he does not play the little that he has to play on this track very well... let sbe honest now...

  • he sucks?? okkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

  • It may be basic, but it works. If you want complicated listen to "BAD" live, "GONE" live or "CITY OF BLINDING LIGHTS".

  • or listen to exit..and yeah bad was an awesome performance :)

  • Of course that this is "Get On Your Boots"

  • exactly... most of the people say is too basic.. and i agree.. but edge's guitars are also easy.. so this means that is not important to demonstrates so much of skill with their instruments... is all about being a great musician. that is what diferences them from other bands or styles like metal (just to mention)... they are the best rock band.

maybe there are a lot of "kids" who can play like them or better, but no one else have EVER created songs like U2 (all metal and punk song are equal )

  • i have a student whos only 9 and can play that pattern he is way too basic

  • hey guys! let's be serious, he's the drummer of one of the best bands ever but this is too basic.

  • It's about what makes the song work , not everyone doing the most complicated thing they can do!!! Make the somg work , that's more important then just grabbing the spotlight!!!

  • This is almost the same that he plays on Elevation, Beautiful Day, Vertigo....!

    Any one disagree?

  • Paiste still lists LMJr. signature series, but... Yeah, Paiste over Zildjian... maybe it's the N. African sound he's going for but that's a stretch?

Arguing who is the best drummer is subjective... Stewart Copeland still uses Paiste!

  • You can tell this is the drum beat for the song "Get on your boots" since the guitar rythm can be heard faintly. The new single is coming out on Jan 19th.

  • Wait a second! Why the hell is he playing Zildjian cymbals when he endorses Paiste cymbals?!

  • Probably because they had the sound he was looking for. I saw a pic of Chad Smith using Zildjian K cymbals and he endorses Sabian.

  • Because he makes money from endorsing companies' products.

  • He is one of the Best, He is a simple drummer but keeps the beat perfectly and that is a drummers job, to keep the beat

  • ur so silly

msg me on M.S.N. ID is in my profile! Zw

  • MMMM I dont know, I am a real fan of U2 but I think non of them is the best in what each of them do, but, I think that together they are reeeeeeaaaaallly good

  • greatest rock drummer of all time???

hmmm im a big u2 fan but u are not on the same page.......if your taking rock drummers theres at least 100 you could put ahead of him for talent............

  • I think even Larry knows that. He's even said he has to think really hard to play properly. He's no John Bonham but still an awesome drummer!

  • id disagree hes average to good.............Funny enough he played more complex and interesting stuff on the early records.( im a drummer too)

  • No shit so am I...but he must be doing something right if he's still the drummer of one of the biggest rock bands ever!

  • Larry RULES and so does the Drums!!!!!!!!!!

  • can't wait for the new album

  • Is that Adam at the end? lol

  • this guy is sooooo amazing- or isnt he?

  • And the band he formed is just as amazing ;)

  • larry has stopped using paiste... its the end of an era!

  • Oh my God! No way! Wow.

  • Zildjian might be releasing a signature mullen jr series. Still in the developmental stage.

  • "My main kit is a Yamaha Studio kit with a 22" kick, one mounted rack tom, a floor drum on the left and right, a Brady 13" snare, Yamaha or Ludwig piccolos and a selection of Paiste cymbals. There is also a monitoring system around that set-up. I also have a Yamaha cocktail-type kit with an 18" kick, a couple of toms and another Brady snare, but without any monitoring.

  • boys and girls, you have just witnessed the greatest rock drummer of all time, working out of the studio.

  • not tight

  • I find it very rare to see he's using the Z's... although I have been a fan of Sabian cymbals.

    I can't see clearly if Larry's kit was mic'ed.

  • he normally uses Paiste, but hes using a different dum set i guess...

  • Sabian cymbals are made by Robert Zildjian... that's got to be weird. A bunch of Zildjians making Sabian cymbals.

  • Yeah what's up with the Zildjians :(

Can't imagine that he will use those on the new album??

  • The traitor! Paiste Signature are by far the best cymbals, what was he thinking! He'll come to his senses soon enough and come crawling back. I'm gonna miss the sweet sound of his Signature Heavy hi hats on the new record :(

  • Yes, i think so too...

  • yes, his heavy HH I will miss it :( I wait to hear that on the record. They always put many filters, so the cymbals can sound anything they want...anyway...the paiste clear and brilliant sound may not be there! too bad. :(

  • good

  • That's great!

There's a music on background... sounds fine!

    Zildjian Cymbals? O.o

Since 1983 he uses Paiste Cymbals...
