  • Gory, Gory, halleluegia! (sic)

  • 8-track! They use an 8-track! Don't bother asking what that is, boys and girls. To those of us who've experienced them.... we realize.... you really don't want to know.

  • karaoke¿¿

  • Damn. I live near Davenport now. I wonder if I can track down some discarded Singing Machines from the back alley.

  • I have the same model as demonstrated in the video. It's a nice unit.

  • That company was located just down the street from me!

  • i love billy van

    he was awesome.

    no one like him.

  • The Singing Machine company is still in business (albeit, not with its own store), still making home karaoke machines.

Today's models use CDs with onscreen lyrics, have built-in TV screens to display those lyrics, and cost a fraction of the price of the cheapest model the company made in 1984.

The industry is changing again, though. Due to licensing issues, the CDs will no longer include onscreen lyrics, or even lyric sheets in the packages. So if you don't know the words, you'll be S.O.L.!

  • This was the very first in-home karaoke machine. The first karaoke song I ever sang ("Flashdance") was with one of these, at the CNE in 1985. I still have the audio cassette of it.

I spent most of the money from my first summer job on one of these, & it's still in my parents' basement. I think I know what happened to the machine used in this ad. Ranger Gord had it & the rack of 8-track cartridges in his treehouse, in the early years of "The Red Green Show" (a CHCH production back then).

  • omg thanks for this vid, im such a Billy Van fan!

  • My friend from high school was in the print ad for this thing. Hi, Fiona, if you're watching! :-) I sure hope someone had the brains to copyright it at the time. So close to karaoke and untold millions!

  • Isn't this just karaoke without the, um, karaoke?

Hahaha I'll bet ANYONE that when it came time to teach those kids that song for this ad, they asked, "Who the hell is Bill Bailey?!?!"
