  • good song ..thank u freind !

  • I still cant believe why this film was not popular at that time even after having many ever lasting songs. Shuaib had explained it well and feels a bit disappointed about the thinking of our people in evaluating something as good as this. We learn that this film had brought together many many greats. Today we still can enjoy the film as well as the songs. This Virindu song is one of my favourites and being still in my 30s I would prefer this song over many other popular hits of our time.

  • Dear Vidhura,

It was Ivor Dennis who did vocals on the "Viridu" song. Sunil Santha didn't do any vocals for the movie "Rekhawa".

You can get more information from the beautiful book "Sunil Santha - Hela geeye mudun mul sara" by Vijith Kumar Senaratne.

  • Dear Aruna,

Thanks for that info on Ivor Dennis.

I will try to get the book by Vijith Kumara.

  • Thanks Vidura for adding this rare clip. The songs are exceptional and unusual and the film itself was a turning point in SL films like Ranmutu Duwa.

The village scenaries and culture was nicely blended in the movie.

    Regards

    Manel

  • Thanks Vidhura for the upload of this classic movei, Gamini Fonseka was the technical Director.

  • Thanks Palitha. Didn't know Gamini was involved in it. 53 years ago.

  • Thanks Vidhura, for this great upload.

The ignorance of the village folk is portrayed in a very sensitive and dignified manner.

  • Tharu,

You summed it up nicely there.

    Lester is our Sathyajith Ray.

    Vidhura

  • Vidura,

Lester said It was a historical co-incidence that Ray's "Pather Panchali" which got a lot of recognition and "Rekawa" were produced the same time. Great people think alike and both broke traditions by doing their films away from the studio! It was "Rekawa" that brought Sisira and Indrani together when they had to go to India for the song recording.During my high school I promised to see all Lester's movies released earlier, no matter where it was screened and I kept to my promise!

  • Sunil Santha, B.S. Perera, Ivo Dennis & Lester James Peries...what a beautiful combination....thanks Vidhura for sharing this clip..!!

  • Yes Aruna, everyone has contributed to this special creation in 1956. Lester started the cinematic revolution. Thanks for your comment.

    Vidhura

  • The virindu singer is Ivo Dennis. His voice is quite similar to Sunil Santha.

  • You may be correct

  • Sesha Palliakara acts as the boru kakul karaya. The film audience , so used to Indian movies , did not like "Rekahava" and one of the reasons given was that there was no definite ending ( kind of a living happily ever after fairy tale ending)!!! Another reason given was that the kids remained kids and did not grow into adults in the movie !!

    Shuaib

  • Shauib,

That was a good observation. It is difficult to switch the moods from the old South Indian commercial type to something different. Thanks for your insight.

    Vidhura

  • This is amazing. Very beautiful.

  • Thanks MM, the oldie in its flawless manner - Vidhura
