Flo is as good as the big names, Chaka Khan, Tina Turner, Pattie LeBelle, also the young ones, Janet Jackson, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Whitney Houston and Rihanna!!!
I have to comment again regarding this wonderful talent of Florence Ballard. She was soulful but more bluesy because Dee Dee Warwick recorded the same song and gave it a more gospel/soulful touch which made me separate the two recordings. Flo's solo album didn't touch on her gift. Motown did more work with her and showcased her voice better I have to say.
I love this song. Flo Ballard would've tore into this song had she sang it live giving the song the Ballad touch. A talent we never got to see spin on its own.
I LOOOOOVE listening to this song! You can really feel Flo on this one..I love when she says...MAKE BELIEVE and when she says ....I break downa nd cryy...yyyy...walk on byyyy..! She kills it. My problem with her fans is that I feel that since dreamgirls that many people has listened to that FILM so they automatically think she was the BEST singer of the Supremes when infact she was ONE of the best. I think that Scherrie Payne was...hands down the best! But FLO HAD THE VOICE..as you can hear!
This song I believe comes the closest to Flo's talents from the ABC sessions. Flo was magnificent. I can just about hear her tearing this up live. I can almost hear her singing the intro and lead to "Stoned Love".
Why were groups set up back then with one lead singer? Why weren't we able to hear the others vocals? Florence was beautiful I can't wait to start reading the book about her life I just ordered it from Barnes & Noble.
It's a shame Flo's voice could not have been displayed more while she was at Motown =(
However, The Temptations are a good example of a group that really shared the leads. I'm sure the group could have had the same amount of success with Flo and Mary occasionally leading a b-side or one or two songs on albums - and a few more leads on live shows would have been nice too =D.
Which book did you get? The Lost Supreme one by Peter Benjaminson?
With the ABC production they didn't know Flo's voice and the productions were horrible as Motown knew Flo's voice and brought the best ouf of her. This was misearable productions and Flo was already going through a lot at that time so how can you bring the best out of a singer. She had so much going for her but it seems everything went down hill for Flo and the poor woman had to deal with that and a career and husband who knew nothing about the business. Very bad time for her.
Hmm...I agree and disagree...yes the producers didn't utilise Flo's voice properly BUT there is some g r e a t production on the album (Love Ain't Love, Like You Babe, My Heart, Forever Faithful). In fact, most of the songs are produced well but not right for Flo - such as The Impossible Dream (Flo could have teared that up but the arrangement wasn't appropriate for her style of singing)
true, but "IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW I SAY IT, IT'S WHAT I SAY THAT MATTERS" is a cute song that had great potential, they didn't really market her, i think it's a very catchy tune. But this one is not showcasing her voice, and honestly i dind't like her lead songs on the supremes, but she def. has a sound, i wish she could have found the right people to get behind her to push her to her stardom.
Yes, her first single has even been praised by Allmusic. However, I think her second singel Love Ain't Love with its awesome b-side Forever Faithful should have been her break out hit. I wonder how things would have been had she not had her husband Tommy as her manager...
Then again. He was her husband and I think he most probably offered to be her manager. It's just a shame that the two people who she needed the most at that time - her husband and her lawyer - were the two people who were not worthy of her trust
I definately agree. Flo does a good job and the production is great - but that spark and fire she displayed on songs like HEY BABY and BUTTERED POPCORN while she was a Supreme isn't present on the takes released from her ABC sessions.
I am re reading her bio..just so sad,and as a friend of Dee Dee's for years, there is no comparison..This time listening to this, she had to be under the influence...Perfect pithc, but come on..And I know the club in Atlantic city where she made one of her appearances....Horrible
I was in Atlantic City when she was there but found out too late...Saw Flo and the others many times at the Steel Pier in AC and was there when Cindy replaced her,I believe which their first full week of shows with Cindy
She had a wide range like Aretha. She can blow away the high notes, and the low notes too. Listen to her speaking voice in interviews, it is deep. Very sexy and sensual.
damn she killed this but i feel everytime i hear her sing she was holding alot of emotion inside but i still feel her but she could of been better if she let it all out on the table but i do like that she always sounds drunk
I feel she was told to hold back on some songs - well at least advised to sing them differently to how she would have if she had complete control.
For example, if you listen to the released, finsihed version of It Doesn't Matter How I Say It (posted in its correct key by Dynamite8503) and then listen to the first take that I have posted, you can hear how differently Flo sings it.
I feel that her producer(s) told her to sing a certain way on many of the songs
I do like that she gets to let lose a little on Walk On By =D - on that song she sounds as if she had picked that song to record and was really fond of it.
LOL at the drunk sound. I think on Yesterday she sounds quite tipsy and at the beginning of this she does a little as well but it just adds to the emotion of the song and shows how versatile Flo was - as she could still sing so sweetly on songs like Everything Wonderful and Stay In Love
Well there is a video on youtube about her daughters in which they were interviewed and said they were on welfare. I do hope they have gotten off welfare and have got themselves respectable jobs. They did get money from the profits of Peter Benjaminson's book on their mother though, entitled 'The Lost Supreme: The Life of Dreamgirl Florence Ballard' =)
Aw thank you - it was a little hard to do as I really wanted it to go with the picture. I used a promo pic of Flo from 1968 and because it was soooo huge, I could do a closeup on her eye and it was still 1000x1000 pixels xD lool.
I have heard Dee Dee's version. I even mention it in the description and in the tags.
I l o v e Dee Dee's original but I also love Flo's as it is very different and the arrangement is slightly different too - especially for the instruments.
Check out Flo's brilliant cover of Dionne's WALK ON BY
Hey MeetTheSupremes, I tried PMing you but was unsucessful. Thanks for the post! Why did her album on ABC records ever come out? Was it from the backlash of her being ousted from the Supremes.
Well Flo released 2 singles with ABC that both flopped - due to poor promotion and distribution by ABC - and I guess they didn't think her album would do any better.
People knew that she had left the group and people DID know her name. ABC should have been able to advertise her EVEN WITHOUT being allowed to mention her "Supreme" past.
Search Florence Ballard on wikipedia for more info =)
No problem, I thought I would repost it with a different vid as the old one was terrible xD though I really should have put more effort it in at least you can see the cover art I made for her album.
Oh yes I thought it was thank you very much. So it was written/composed by Carole King-Gerry Goffin - or is that two people? As I'm trying to add more info to the wikipedia page about Flo's album (I have added in the producers and songwriters etc already except for LIKE YOU BABE and YOURS UNTIL TOMORROW)
Carole King and Gerry Goffin were one of the all-time great songwriting teams - "Up on the Roof," "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," "Hey Girl," "You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman," "Go Away Little Girl," - and on and on and on.
Thank you so much for that info - I have put it on Flo's wikipedia page for her album. Now I just need the full names of the writers/composers of LIKE YOU BABE and STAY IN LOVE =D
