@conseler 9 of the top 10 most obese states are southern states butI don't think that childhood obesity is because of Southern Cooking I think that it has more to do with poverty. Low income areas are always close to fast food and I don't need to tell you what a McDonalds diet does. If these people had acess to fresh organic produce that was affordable this would not be much of a problem. I live in Ca and there is a large Native American population here that does not have this obesity problem.

I think the food stamp program needs to be CHANGED. I've seen people using the food stamp card for shopping carts full of chips, cookies, processed foods, etc. The taxpayer is subsidizing BAD health. Chances are the food stamp users are also on Gov't Medicaid. They end up with chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Mrs. Obama's cause is a good one, but the food stamp program makes it EASY for people to buy what the heart desires with someone else's hard earned money.

However, we don't need the president (or his wife) telling us what to eat (by making new laws or regulations) forcing us to eat what he or she deems as "healthy" or not eat what they feel is "unhealthy." Won't change the fact that school lunches have more calories per bite than a kids' meal at Burger King. Kids meal can range from 250 to 560 cals depending on order, while school lunches are over 1,000 cals. Also won't change the fact PE was taken out, especially in poor schools. newton, "washington" has been "tackling this issue" for decades and "we" have only gotten fatter. So tragically this effort will come to naught just like all the others. Reason is it is up to each of us individually to live a healthy life, so in that respect maybe a few will be encouraged. But the overall problem will not be touched as, if gov't is involved, it is more in the subsidies it gives for the production of bad food. This won't fix that. We all know "proper diet diet and exercise"
The major challenges in fixing it are a lassiez-faire (business-rights!) mentality and a dependence by politicians on fundraising from businesses. The way fundraising works is a race-to-the-bottom - what percentage of time do your representatives spend at fundraisers? Chances are, no matter their party, they spend more time doing that than doing their job. Unless we find a way to fix that, it's hard to imagine real change on any issue where a business with lobbyists has an interest.
I will have to disagree since the gov't is already up to its neck in this issue and has been for decades. The major challenge is to educate people what food is, to eat real food. No need for gov't action there. @conseler 9 of the top 10 most obese states are southern states butI don't think that childhood obesity is because of Southern Cooking I think that it has more to do with poverty. Low income areas are always close to fast food and I don't need to tell you what a McDonalds diet does. If these people had acess to fresh organic produce that was affordable this would not be much of a problem. I live in Ca and there is a large Native American population here that does not have this obesity problem.

In my opinion, the amount of fat kids in the USA is a real poor reflection on this society in general. Parents feed their kids crap, kids live off junk food, soda, chips and all the other crap. I think the food stamp program needs to be CHANGED. I've seen people using the food stamp card for shopping carts full of chips, cookies, processed foods, etc. The taxpayer is subsidizing BAD health. Chances are the food stamp users are also on Gov't Medicaid. They end up with chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Mrs. Obama's cause is a good one, but the food stamp program makes it EASY for people to buy what the heart desires with someone else's hard earned money.

I've seen this before in the Clinton, and later the Bush Jr., administration. All this is just a fiasco for Washington to look good, but won't change anything. Won't change the fact that school lunches have more calories per bite than a kids' meal at Burger King. Kids meal can range from 250 to 560 cals depending on order, while school lunches are over 1,000 cals. Also won't change the fact PE was taken out, especially in poor schools. The major challenges in fixing it are a lassiez-faire (business-rights!) mentality and a dependence by politicians on fundraising from businesses. The way fundraising works is a race-to-the-bottom - what percentage of time do your representatives spend at fundraisers? Chances are, no matter their party, they spend more time doing that than doing their job. Unless we find a way to fix that, it's hard to imagine real change on any issue where a business with lobbyists has an interest.

No need for gov't action there. ?? I am puzzled by your answer. So much anger without any real reason. There is such a thing as normal weight, the standard is, what is my right weight to be healthy. kids are getting diabetes which 20 yrs ago was unthinkable. It looks like parents are doing nothing (not all, but the majority), I can see the future in the Walt Disney movie Wall-e being a reality. Before jumping to conclusions, read what the bill is about and if they really don't know anything, write or send an email to them.

Who says what's "normal"? You? I grew up with all sizes of kids....we all ran and played together and they still remained all sizes. Genetics plays a huge part in what someone weighs. What is considered "normal" for one set of genetics may be abnormal for another. When Government tells us what we can and can't eat it's gone too far. Our freedoms are disappearing and the blind are welcoming it. Sad. This is the Twilight Zone. Impeach that bastard!

It's not a matter of whos telling us what we can and cant eat. But how certain foods are being marketed to us.
For years, corporations from the Potato Chip, Soda, and Candy industries have put so much money into advertising (estimating over 10 billion a year) in order for kids to think, through sublime messages, that these types of foods are good and good for you. You ever stop to look at a 100 calorie pack of Chips A-Hoy?
Corps. need to be regulated. Thats what the Gov is trying to do.

You don't seem to understand the way civilisation works. It's not a system where you do absolutely whatever you like and are left alone, nor is it a system where you are told exactly what to do. It's a mix - we're all in it together, we all look out for each other, and we all have a stake in each other.

Libertarian contract theory (or Wiccan ethics) are not the way real societies have ever been organised. Maybe you want something different, but the "do whatever you like so long as it doesn't hurt anyone else" model is (so far) just a fantasy, and an ugly one at that. I'm not requesting or demanding it - it is already there, it is fact. You don't have to like it though, but don't be surprised if you see *many* people block you from dismantling civilisation in pursuit of your ideals.

The US certainly did interfere with Amerindian cultural traditions, in many ways. Their interference in modern times is minimal (as Amerindian tribes have the effective legal status of a state) but not nonexistent.

A population primarily on a RICE diet vs a population primarily on a BEEF diet, will be more easily 'convinced'.

You still need Vitamin D with K2 to appropriately absorb the calcium. The vitamin D in our milk doesn't help because the vitamins die due to temperature change. Studies have reported that the amount of milk consumed per country directly correlates with the rate of osteoporosis. Also we lose 70% of our lactate enzymes by the age of 4. We clearly shouldn't be drinking milk after breast feeding.

yea exposure to sunlight does do that but how many people actually spend /that/ much time enough in the sun to receive sufficient vitamin D? A lot of people stay inside and some people use sunblock which would hinder the amount of vitamin D we receive if anything.
