  • I have had a vp shunt since I was 3 days old. Sadly I have had it replaced almost ten times,.

  • @jagfriend12151994 dang that IS Sad.I'm only on my 3rd one (just got it last week after going into Cardiac Arrest (no paddles needed) something must be very wrong if you've had it replaced THAT many times.

  • I've had a shunt since about 8-10 months old and have had it replaced twice its as if it is a natural part of my body

  • I had an ETV in 2009 due to the discovery of a brain tumour which was causing my hydrocephalus and about 3 months ago it failed quite severely and I had to have a shunt put it and it's incredible how much better I am with the shunt.

  • I have one too, and had it replaced two years ago

  • Thanks for the video. My father has a low pressure shunt, implanted 3 months ago (apr-2011). Now suffering from sobredrenaje and have to change to other programmable shunt. Is it necessary to re-operate the skull or can be repositioned on the basis of the old shunt?

    Thank you very much.

  • Thank you for this. My twin brother has a shunt in his brain to drain the excess fluid build up in his brain... This makes me realize how lucky I am to have him living with me today after 20 years together. <3

  • By the time I was 15, I had 22-23 shunt revisions. To day I'm at 30 - 35. I am 37, by the way. This is NOT a competition from my side, just information.

  • You guys have had way less revisions than I've had and I'm only 15 O.o I've had 15 surgeries related to my shunts :\

  • waoooooooooooo es un completo trauma

  • This video was very helpful. I've been living with a Shunt for twenty-seven years now since birth

  • i've been living with Hydrocelphus for about 30 yrs, my last shunt revision was when i was 12 yrs. old

  • I had my VP Shunt revision in May of 2010 It was five years late but it was my fourth revision and the doctor's told me I can't do the normal things. I used to do. It's almost a year later and I am doing even better now. I'm practicing MMA fighting but, they say I'm the slowest one in the class but when I tell then about my VP Shunt their like man you tough I don't let anything stop me

  • my 8 yo boy was a premie, with a bilateral bleed. scaring required a shunt to aliviate the pressure. shunt replaced In April 09 his tubing needed to be replaced (it was too short) He was non verbal and had CP. 1/4/11 had we thought was a stomach virus, when we brought him to the hospital they gave him intravenous fluids to prevent dehydration, fact was is that his shunt was malfunctioning,ll of the fluids had no where to go. He pased away from the dammage to his brain. look for the signs.

  • People who r normal. shouldn't make fun of people with HYdrocelphus and or SPina Bifida! we're people too we just different circumstances, i mean we might have to get a shunt changed a few times in our lifetime, but we deserve love, respect, honor, diginity, and pride. You Know can i get a Amen!!

  • @KolerikRocks AMEN.I have both.I have a VP shunt,and a magnet piece too.Do You have the magnet?IDK why I even have that part.

  • r u talking about the valuve i have 2 of them. Kolerik Can i add u as a friend on here

  • I believe it's too drain the spinal fluid from the brain into the stomach. I have 2 shunts and the rubberer piece is called a tube or valve

  • Hey Amandatwlight20, do u think i should someday make a you tube video on you tube about whatever? Kolerik

  • disreguard that 1 message, i have 2 Shunts and 1 valve Kolerik

  • @KolerikRocks Amen

  • I am 23 and have my original shunt which was inserted at 9 days old. It is not unusual to go years without a revision.

  • My last shunt revision was done when i was 12 yrs, old. I can't ride any rides cause if i do that i'll have to go into surgery and get it changed again so i quit riding rides period. i'll be 30 this yr, and i was born @ 2 LBS and 4 OZ. My mom calls me a miracle baby i shouldn't have lived past 5 YRS. old! Hydrocelphus can kill you believe it or not! Kolerik

  • Believe me that's true. My last shunt revision was done when i was 12 yrs. old and the doctors told my mom and dad i'd not make it past 5 yrs old. here 20 + yrs later i'll be 30 in spetember, and i was born in @ 2 LBS and 4 OZ. People can be abnormally cruel when it comes to people who have shunts and stuff. Kolerik

  • thanks for that info callinwood. it has been most useful. zoe does seem to keep a good control over hers. i did have concerns at one point when she came to stop the weekend cos all she seemed to want to do was sleep. now she gets the train from nottingham to leeds on the friday which is a 2 hour journey she is always exhausted when she gets here but this particular weekend she was tired throughout most of it which made me concerned and probably overreact

  • my girlfriend has hydrocephalus she is 24 now and the interesting thing is she had the shunt put in from birth obviously she had to have a new one put in when she was 7 but it has been fine ever since. is that normal? or is it time maybe for her to get it looked at again. i dont think she has had it looked at since. just she told me that at the time she was getting really bad headaches and it turned out the shunt was the cause

  • @eas17dale It all depends I also have hydrocephalus and when I get really bad headaches and start to throw up I know my shunt has blocked. Im also 24 almost 25 now and I have had 4 surgeries throughout my lifetime. All you have to do is look for the warning signs which are headaches that resemble migrains if she feels nauseous and if she feels sick. I also have shunt that can be pressed which also tells you if it is working properly all it does is fills up and drains as you press it

  • @Dr. Pakzaban....WOW that was kinda cool, sir. I have Spina Bifida, so I'm sure you know how I feel with this stupid shunt and all. It stinks to have one...especially with horrific headaches. I had mine revised late last year, the entire shunt SYSTEM but I wasn't in the hospital TOO long at that time. For awhile even after that I've still felt bad headaches that would be so excruciatingly horrible I would be crying a lot. I don't know what to do because it doesn't seem long ago since it was done

  • I was born with hydrocephalus and had a shunt put in. This is fascinating to me.

  • Believe me shuts suck completely! i have 2 of them and almost 30 yrs old. Shunts r there for a reason. is to drain the CFS Cerebral spinal fulid off the brain and into the stomach! The Doctors told my mom and dad i might not have made it past 5 yrs old, but here i Am 20+ yrs later. See back in the days doctors didn't know everything and weren't also right. US permies we either lived or we died there's no 2 ways getting around it! There's no cure for HYDROCEPHALUS as of yet!

  • I did not remember this happening to me, though I was asleep.

  • I have this condition.

  • My little girl is 2 years old and just got one last week...i was really nervous after she got it done cause she kept throwing up...we had to call the ambulance one night cause we couldnt keep her awake, but now she is getting used to it,and doing really good...her balance is getting better already...its hard cause she also has autism so she cant tell us if something is wrong...

  • Great video, Thanks for posting. 1985 is when I had to have one put in because of a car accident. 1990 tube came apart, 1999 replaced the valve was replaced.

  • I got one of these n wow thats crazy but interesting

  • Dr. Pakzaban, can you tell me if there was a valve included in that shunt system? If so, is it shown in the video or is it located out of view of the camera? Thanks in advance, if you can respond.

  • Yes, there is always a valve. It is just under the skin edge out of the video field of view.

  • @pakzaban Thank you, Dr. Pakzaban.

  • @pakzaban im pre med right now but dreaming of becoming a neurosurgeon. can you tell me what i can do to make sure my hands will be very still? thanks.

  • Does anyone know how a peritoneal catheter is extended. I might need to have it done soon, since I've had the shunt in for 16 years (Im 17). My dad says that my NS told him that you could extend the tube in the stomach, without making any cuts into the head. I don't believe them at all, it just doesn't seem possible without connecting a new tube to the valve. Im so freaked out :( I HATE HYDRO :(

  • @coastermusic93

Hey ive got hydro too, well i have an arachnoid cyst, but its basically the same thing, treated the same way.

Erm regarding having an extension, I haven't heard myself, having an extension from the stomach, usually they replace the distal catheter from the end of the shunt valve.

Having said this, perhaps your NS is planning on connecting a valve piece, just like a connector to your lower end of you catheter and adding on rather than replacing.

Hope all goes well :) x

  • HEY, sir or maddam, I hate having HYDRO it sucks! but us premies we either lived or we died, there was no two ways getting around. The doctors told my mom and dad i wouldn't make it past 5 yrs. of age, but 20+ yrs later i'll be 30 in september. I'm a miracle baby, and i'm damned lucky to be alive. I've had alot of shunt revisions up till age 12. Kolerik

  • wow I hope my VP shunt insertion didn't look like that as a baby, it's like a geyser! very interesting to see how it was put in anyways. I am glad I saw this.

  • ok i thought since i have one, this would be easy to watch.... not ok!

  • Now see, I just can't watch this!

  • Speaking as someone with a shunt (Due to Spina Bifida) this is really cool getting to see how the shunt gets put in.
